Makkah Masjid secretly surveyed 3 months before blast – Rajender Choudhary

National Investigation Agency (NIA) in its latest investigations found out that the person who planted bomb in Makkah Masjid had already surveyed the spot 3 months back. NIA had arrested Rajender Choudhary in March this year and interrogated him under its custody. Rajender Choudhary alias Samandar Pahelwan in his confession statement told the NIA officials that he came to Hyderabad by train in February 2007 along with his accomplice Tejaram Parmar and surveyed the areas of Charminar, Makkah Masjid and other commercial places.

Congress MLA from Mandvi arrested on charges of rioting

A Congress MLA from Mandvi in rural Surat, Prabhu Vasava, was arrested by the police today on charges of rioting. However, he was later released on bail. According to the police, Vasava and one of his accomplices Narpatsinh Mahida were arrested today on the basis of a complaint filed by former Congress MLA Kuwarji Halpati in the Mandvi police station. Prior to the Gujarat assembly elections held last year, Halpati had defected from the Congress and joined the BJP, after which equations between the two changed.

2 persons held with 71 fake Indian passports

Two persons who were planning to send several Sri Lankan Tamil refugees to Germany using fake Indian passports were today arrested and 71 counterfeit passports seized from them at Naripaiyur in Ramanathapuram district, police said. Cash to the tune of Rs 11.5 lakh was also seized from the duo by the ‘Q’ Branch Police which nabbed them on a tip-off. The two had promised 71 refugees that they would be sent to Germany and collected money from them, police said. They were produced before a court which remanded them to judicial custody.

Andhra CM Reddy predicts Congress Party”s win in Karnataka

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Wednesday said the Congress Party would emerge victorious in the upcoming Karnataka assembly polls.

Reddy said that the people of Karnataka are disillusioned with the incumbent BJP Government.

“As indications are the Congress Party is going to pull of one of its biggest victories in Karnataka. The people are fed up of the two previous governments both in ways of development and in ways of corruption,” he said.

Reddy also lauded the Congress manifesto in which the party has promised various development schemes for the poor.

AP: Absconding rape accused arrested after 14 years

An accused in a case of gang rape dating back to 1990 has been arrested by Andhra Pradesh CID after 14 years. Mohd Waheed and five others were accused of abducting a woman in May, 1990. She was confined to a room on the outskirts of Miryalguda in Nalgonda district and raped repeatedly. She succeeded in escaping and lodged a complaint. CID probed the case. During the trial, Waheed jumped the bail and disappeared. The other five men were convicted and sentenced to seven years in jail. But Waheed remained absconding all these years, before he was arrested yesterday at Miryalaguda. PTI

Supreme Court-appointed SIT, probing the 2002 Gujarat riots, today claimed suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was not a “witness” in the complaint against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, but a “manipulator”. “Sanjiv Bhatt was never a witness to any meeting held by Chief Minister, but he is fabricating everything…(he) is manipulating and has conspired to play media card in building pressure groups to influence not only amicus curae (in Zakia Jafri’s petition) Raju Ramchandran, but even the Supreme Court,” SIT lawyer R S Jamuar said.

Political violence continues in Pakistan ahead of polls

Violence by militants against politicians and campaign meetings in Pakistan continued unabated today, with 14 persons injured in a string of attacks, including one carried out by a suicide bomber in southern Sindh province. National People’s Party leader Ibrahim Jatoi, a candidate in the May 11 general election, had a narrow escape when a suicide bomber blew himself up near his motorcade at Shikarpur in Sindh this morning. The bomber targeted the convoy at a toll plaza. Jatoi told the media that he was not injured by the blast.

Andhra Pradesh: Four incidents of rape reported in 5 days

Four rape incidents, including that of a minor girl and a “mentally challenged” girl, were reported in past five days in Andhra Pradesh, the police said on Wednesday.

Three rape incidents were reported in different parts of the state capital since Friday, while another incident occurred in Karimnagar district, the police said. An eight-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her step father on Friday night at her home in Rajendranagar area when the victim’s mother, had gone out for work, the police said.

Boston Marathon twin blasts: Three arrested men charged with undermining probe

US authorities on Wednesday charged three men with interfering with the investigation of the Boston Marathon bombing, saying they hid fireworks and a backpack belonging to one of the suspected bombers as a manhunt was under way.

The three, two students from Kazakhstan and a US citizen, were described as friends of surviving bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. They were not charged with direct involvement in the April 15 marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured 264.

US may give lethal weapons to Syrian rebels: Report

The US is considering providing lethal weapons to Syrian opposition forces and a decision is expected within weeks, a media report said on Wednesday.

“President Barack Obama is preparing to send lethal weaponry to the Syrian opposition and has taken steps to assert more aggressive US leadership among allies and partners seeking the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad,” the Washington Post reported, citing senior US officials.

“The officials said they are moving toward the shipment of arms but emphasized that they are still pursuing political negotiation,” according to a Xinhua report.

Myanmar Muslims face uncertain future after attacks

Sarabjit’s family learns of death from media

The family of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh first learnt of his death in a Lahore hospital through a media report, his family said from India Thursday.

Dalbir Kaur, sister of Sarabjit Singh, told Geo TV that the family had not yet been officially informed about his death at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

She said she received report of her brother’s death on Geo TV.

Sarabjit suffered serious head injuries after being attacked by two prisoners at Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail April 26. He was on ventilator support since then.

Sarabjit should be declared a martyr: family

Sarabjit Singh, the Indian death row prisoner who died in a Lahore hospital early Thursday, should be given the stature of a “shahid” or, martyr, his family has said.

Raj Kumar Verka, vice chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, told IANS that Sarabjit Singh’s family has said he “should be given the stature of a shahid and his body be accorded the due honours”.

Saudi villages evacuated after dam collapse

Several villages in Saudi Arabia were evacuated Wednesday after a dam partially collapsed due to heavy rains, Xinhua reported.

Heavy rains since last Thursday have left 16 people dead, including a five-year-old boy.

On Wednesday, the Saudi civil defence confirmed that the Saudi government evacuated several villages in Tabalah city, 689 km from capital Riyadh, as a precaution.

The civil defence and other government departments have been on alert since Thursday, advising the public to follow instructions and stay indoors if possible.

Rahul Gandhi mocks BJP campaign against corruption

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday mocked the BJP’s attack on the central government over corruption, saying that the party does not talk about its former chief minister going to jail for graft in Karnataka.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) they spoke in parliament about corruption, but they will not talk about it in Karnataka. They will also not say that a chief minister went to jail (over corruption charges),” Gandhi said here at a rally held as part of the campaign for the May 5 assembly polls in the state.

Delhi cop alleges rape by senior

A 24-year-old Delhi Police woman constable, who attempted suicide Tuesday, was allegedly raped by a senior officer after being promised marriage, police said Wednesday.

The woman lodged a complaint against Sub-Inspector Vishesh Khokar at Khajoori Khas police station in east Delhi. Khokar is absconding.

The woman constable befriended Khokar during the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Since then, she was staying with Khokar as a live-in partner in a rented accommodation.

For the past few months, Khokar started avoiding her and told her that he would not marry her.

Elderly man held for bid to rape five-year-old in Haryana

A 62-year-old man was arrested here Wednesday for attempting to rape a five-year-old child, police said.

Aas Mohammad entered the house of the victim in Hariya Heri village Wednesday afternoon and tried to sexually assault her. she raised an alarm.

“The accused had came to the village to collect donations for a madrassa board at Nuh. The victim was all alone at her house when he knocked on the door for donation,” Varun Kumar, chief of Bhondsi police station, told IANS.

UN regrets anti-rape law not reflecting Verma panel views

The United Nations Wednesday expressed regret that the anti-rape law passed by the government after the December 16 gang-rape incident did not fully reflect the recommendations of the Justice J.S. Verma Committee.

“Recommendations on marital rape, lesbians and age of consent (for sex) were not adopted in the legislation,” UN special rapporteur on violence against women Rashida Manjoo told reporters here.

Israeli PM for peace deal with Palestinians

Israel needs to strike a peace deal with the Palestinians in order to prevent the Jewish nation from becoming a “bi-national state”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday.

Netanyahu told senior foreign ministry officials that he was “hoping that the negations with the the Palestinians will resume soon”, Xinhua said quoting local media reports.

He alleged that the root of the conflict is “not territorial” but the refusal to recognise the very existence of the Jewish state.

College on Wheels for Delhi students

The Delhi government will give assistance to University of Delhi for starting “College on Wheels”, a study tour for students across the country, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said Wednesday.

“The Delhi government would definitely help the University of Delhi in commissioning a project called ‘College on Wheels’ inside a train moving to various cities in different parts of the country. It would be an educational excursion,” Dikshit said.

She was speaking at the 91st Foundation Day celebrations of the University of Delhi.

BJP to hold nation-wide protests against UPA

After stalling parliament, the main opposition BJP has decided to hold nationwide protests May 4 and 5 to “expose” the scams of the UPA government.

“These protests will unmask the misuse of constitutional institutions to cover up scams, corruption and sins of the Congress,” BJP vice president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters here.

“BJP leaders including L.K. Advani, party chief Rajnath Singh, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley and all BJP chief ministers will lead protests across the country,” Naqvi said.

Three more detained in Boston bombing

Two weeks after the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing, two classmates of the dead suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and a third person have been arrested and face federal charges.

Boston police announced the arrests Wednesday morning, adding that there was “no threat to the public”. They were expected to appear before a federal judge Wednesday afternoon, CNN reported citing US government sources.
