Sikhs protest near Sonia Gandhi’s residence

Angry Sikhs on Thursday staged a protest near Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s residence against the acquittal of party leader Sajjan Kumar in an anti-Sikh riots case.

Shouting slogans, the protesters started their march from Mansingh Road and broke some barricades to move forward.

However, they were prevented from marching ahead near Gandhi’s residence.

Some of the protesters, who set afire tyres, also entered into a scuffle with some policemen. A large number of policemen were also deployed near Gandhi’s 10-Janpath residence.

Intent not important in charity: Salman Khan

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan feels people should engage themselves in charity irrespective of the reasons for it.

“Everybody in the industry does charity. Some people talk about it and some people don`t. They say intent is important in charity, I don`t believe it. Even if someone is doing charity to show off, I have no problems with it. One should just do charity for whatever reasons they want,” Salman said.

Rahul Gandhi meets Sarabjit’s family

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi Thursday met the family of Sarabjit Singh, Indian death row prisoner who died in a Lahore hospital after being severely beaten up in jail.

The meeting took place at the Tilak Lane residence of Raj Kumar Verka, vice chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, in central Delhi.

After the meeting with Sarabjit’s wife, sister and two daughters, which lasted about 45 minutes, Gandhi was seen leaving with the family in a car with a red beacon.

Writer Shagufta wants Emraan or Ajay for her action thriller

Writer Shagufta Rafique is keen to cast Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi or Ajay Devgn in an action thriller, which will be her directorial debut.

Shagufta started her career as a writer with Bhatt camp production company — Vishesh Films with `Woh Lamhe` and has been part of the company in the capacity of a dialogue writer and screenplay writer for films like `Aawarapan`, `Raaz 2`, `Jism 2`, `Murder 2`, `Raaz 3` `Aashiqui 2` and others. And now she would be wielding the megaphone.

Emraan has been the poster boy of Bhatt camp. And he is the obvious first choice for Shagufta.

Can`t restrict myself to one type of films: Akkineni Nagarjuna

Telugu actor Akkineni Nagarjuna feels he can`t typecast himself and must “exploit” various commercial angles to “cater to the masses”. He admits re-visitng romance genre with ‘Greekuveerudu’ was a “conscious decision”.

“As an actor with a star status, I can`t restrict myself to one type of films and roles. Once in a while I need to go out of my way to do different films, to exploit all commercial angles to cater to the masses,” Nagarjuna said.

New video shows Loch Ness-like monster in Northern Ireland river

A video captured by some local students in Northern Ireland seems to show some kind of creature that resembles the Loch Ness Monster.

Conall Melarkey has posted a short clip of what appears to be a Nessy-like creature in Lough Foyle, off the River Foyle in Ulster, Northern Ireland, a English news website.

The student claims to have been filming a short called ‘Fishing with David Lynch’ when he and his buddies spotted a large creature breaking the surface of the water.

It could be a whale or something else completely normal, but it’s been a fun exercise in YouTube debate.

New rover set to explore Greenland ice sheet

NASA’s newest scientific rover, known as GROVER, which stands for both Greenland Rover and Goddard Remotely Operated Vehicle for Exploration and Research, is set for testing May 3 through June 8 in the highest part of Greenland.

It will roam the frigid landscape collecting measurements to help scientists better understand changes in the massive ice sheet.

This autonomous, solar-powered robot carries a ground-penetrating radar to study how snow accumulates, adding layer upon layer to the ice sheet over time.

Stephen Hawking eyes space flight next year

Renowned physicist Stephen Hawking has made it clear that being on a ventilator hasn’t curbed his lifestyle and said his next aim is to go join British tycoon Richard Branson on a space flight as early as next year.

“Being on a ventilator has not curbed my lifestyle. Since going on a ventilator full time I have been to Brussels, the Isle of Man, Geneva, Canada, California twice, and I hope to go into space with Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic,” he said during a rare public appearance in London.

Skype video calling available for Outlook.com users in the UK

Microsoft has announced that its Outlook.com will now support Skype video calling.

The rollout will start in the UK, where Outlook.com users will be able to make audio and video calls as well as send Skype instant messages only by installing a browser plug-in, the BBC reports.

According to the report, the UK-based users will be the first to witness a ‘preview version’ of the technology, followed by US and Germany availability ‘in the coming weeks.’

Bharti Airtel Q4 standalone net down 31.1% at Rs 1,084.4 cr

Telecom major Bharti Airtel on Thursday reported a 31.1 per cent fall in standalone net profit at Rs 1,084.4 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 31, 2013, mainly due to higher expenses.

The company’s standalone net profit stood at Rs 1,574.3 crore in year-ago period.

Total expenses of the company increased by 11.76 per cent at Rs 9,816.3 crore during the reported quarter from Rs 8,782.9 crore in the corresponding period of previous fiscal, the company said in a BSE filing.

‘Pakistani Taliban newly energised monster’

The Pakistani Taliban is a monster that has been newly energised during the elections, a prominent daily said Wednesday, worried at the lack of serious effort to control this menace.

US keeps Cuba on state sponsors of terrorism list

The State Department has announced that Washington has no plans to remove Cuba from a list of state sponsors of terrorism that also includes Iran, Syria and Sudan.

The decision is sure to ruffle feathers in Havana, which vehemently denies any links to terrorism. Cuba’s government contends its inclusion on the list is a political vendetta by a US government that has kept an economic embargo on the Communist-run island for 51 years.

Guantanamo prison closure: Obama weighs options

The US is determined to close down the Guantanamo Bay terrorist detention centre and the Administration is looking into various decisions that can be taken in this regard, the White House has said.

Press Secretary Jay Carney said yesterday that there are a number of things that the Obama Administration can do in this regard, adding that President Barack Obama is determined to see closure of the detention centre.

The Congress, however, is against the closure and is opposing any move in this regard.

Satellite images suggest destruction in Nigerian town

US-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has released satellite images that suggest Nigerian troops carried out extensive destruction in the northern town of Baga during a raid sparked by the killing of a soldier last month.

The Joint Task Force (JTF) was stationed in the north to fight against the upsurge of Islamic extremists in the region spearheaded by Boko Haram sect.

During the attack on the town, the Red Cross reported that 187 persons were killed but the military said the number was much lower.

Sikh group offers a million dollars for Sajjan Kumar’s conviction

A US based Sikh rights group has announced a million-dollar reward for those individuals whose testimony and evidence may result in the conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar.

The reward will be given to those individuals who will come forward with tips, evidence and testimony leading to the reversal of a Delhi court’s judgement acquitting Kumar in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) announced.

SFJ said it would engage top advocates to prosecute the appeal against the acquittal of Kumar before Delhi High Court.

BJP walks out of RS, says people have lost faith in govt

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha, hitting out strongly at the government. Addressing the House, Rajya Sabha leader of opposition Arun Jaitley claimed that the government had lost the faith of the people.

Pointing that an investigation report has been shared with the government for the first time, the BJP leader accused the government of subverting every institution. He said that even the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) had also been manipulated by the government.

Protests erupt in Sarabjit Singh’s native village

Angry protests broke out in Sarabjit Singh’s native Bhikhiwind village on Thursday after the Indian prisoner died in a Lahore hospital with villagers lashing out at Pakistani authorities for the deadly attack on him. Shouting anti-Pakistan slogans, several villagers burnt Pakistani flags to register their protest.

During their protest demonstrations, the villagers charged Pakistan with murdering Sarabjit. They also lashed out at Pakistani authorities for not shifting Sarabjit to some other country for “proper treatment.”

US for peaceful resolution of Sino-India boundary

The US has said that it supports peaceful and bilateral resolution of boundary dispute between India and China.

“We support India and China working together to settle their boundary disputes, and to do so bilaterally and peacefully,” State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said at his daily news conference.

Ventrell was responding to a question on the US stand on the ongoing tension between India and China after the Chinese incursion inside the Indian territory in Ladakh region.

Shooting for Saif, Ileana romantic-comedy to start in June

After wrapping up zombie comedy “Go Goa Gone”, director duo Raj Nidimoru and Krishna D.K. will start shooting for Saif Ali Khan and Ileana D’Cruz starrer romantic comedy in June.

Krishna told IANS, “It’s a romantic-comedy and we will start rolling the film as soon as ‘Go Goa Gone’ releases. Most probably the film will go on the floors in June. The film is yet untitled and the entire film will be shot in US. I can’t reveal much about the film as it is in its initial stage.”

Police denies permission for Yasin Malik’s protest

Delhi Police has denied permission to Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik to hold a 48-hour hunger strike in the capital to press for his demands including handing over the body of Parliament attack case convict Afzal Guru to his family.

“Yes,” said City Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar when asked whether any decision was taken to deny permission for the protest at Jantar Mantar starting on Friday.

The decision came after security agencies submitted a report to the Union Home Ministry that giving permission to Malik to hold protest in Delhi may create law and order problem.

Iraq: 15 dead from bomb blasts

At least 15 people were killed in a series of bomb blasts across Iraq on Wednesday, police and medics said, following a sharp increase in violence that has prompted warnings of a full-blown conflict.

A suicide bomber wearing an explosive vest detonated himself in the midst of a group of government-backed fighters who were collecting their salaries east of the city of Falluja, killing six, police sources said.
