A Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah serving a life term was attacked inside the high-security Kot Balwal jail by a fellow inmate this morning and his condition is stated to be serious, official sources said.

It was not immediately known whether the attack on the 52-year-old convict with a sharp weapon was a backlash against the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a hospital in Pakistan yesterday after being comatose for nearly a week following a brutal assault by fellow inmates in a high-security Lahore jail, officials said.

Mumbai surgeon wins US award for anti-tobacco campaign

Dr. Pankaj Chaturvedi, a cancer surgeon at Mumbai’s Tata Memorial Hospital, has won a prestigious US award for his innovative leadership in the fight to reduce tobacco use and tobacco-related disease in India.

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids presented Chaturvedi with the Judy Wilkenfeld Award for International Tobacco Control at its annual awards gala here Thursday.

The Wilkenfeld Award was established in honour of Judy Wilkenfeld, the founder of Tobacco-Free Kids’ international programme, who passed away in May 2007.

Sarabjit’s death: Pakistani dailies demand thorough probe

pPakistani dailies Friday demanded a thorough investigation into the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh who was savagely attacked by fellow prisoners, with one pointedly saying this happened because of Pakistani authorities’ “abject failure”.

An editorial in the News International looked beyond issues of diplomacy and politics and said the fact is that “a man has met a brutal end and the affair should never have ended so horribly”.

While the Daily Times saw Sarabjit’s death as “another unfortunate blow to the already wafer-thin interaction between the two conflicted neighbours…”

RBI cuts key policy rate by 0.25 percent

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Friday cut a key policy rate by 0.25 percent. This will make auto, housing and other loans cheaper and help accelerate economic growth.

Repo rate, the rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks, has been cut by 0.25 percent to 7.25 percent.

The reverse repo rate, the rate that RBI pays to commercial banks on their parked money, has been cut to 6.25 percent.

The deceased was in the age group of 30 to 40 years and yet to be identified. A case has been registered and police is trying to trace kins of the deceased.

Works related to Hyderabad Metro Rail are progressing at a brisk pace. In the first phase Metro train would be run between Mettuguda-Nagol-Uppal stretch and between SR Nagar and Miyanpur.

According to highly placed sources the cost of Metro Rail project is Rs. 14135 crore of which central government has issued Rs 1458 crore while L &T has invested Rs. 12675 crore. State government will provide Rs. 10980 towards land acquisition, public convenience and construction of footpaths.

China: 900 held for meat-related crimes

A total of 904 people have been arrested in China during a three-month campaign for crimes such as producing fake beef and mutton made from rat and fox, the ministry of public security said.

Since Jan 25, police have uncovered a total of 382 cases involving meat-related offences, and seized more than 20,000 tonnes of illegal products, Xinhua cited the ministry as saying.

The crimes also included production of water-injected meat, use of chemicals while processing products, as well as selling of diseased and fake meat.

What did NDA do for Sarabjit’s release: Congress

The Congress on Friday questioned what the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government did to ensure the release of Sarabjit Singh when it was in power, adding that the focus should now be on other Indians in Pakistani jails.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) cornered the government over Sarabjit’s death on Thursday, demanding that diplomatic ties with Pakistan be scaled down until an assurance is offered for the security of Indians in Pakistani jails.

Palestine: Haniyya: “Hamas rejects modified Arab initiative”

Prime Minister of the Hamas-led government in the Gaza Strip, Ismail Haniyya, stated that Hamas rejects the modified Arab peace initiative and added “Palestine is not a property, not for sale or trade”.
Haniyya made his statements as he welcomed European, Tunisian and Egyptian relief convoys in Gaza. He said that the stance of the Arab Committee and its modified version of the Arab Peace Initiative of 2002 “encourages Israel to continue its illegal settlement activities in Palestine”.

Iraq: April deadliest month of violence in Iraq since 2008: UN

April was Iraq’s bloodiest month for almost five years, with 712 people killed in bomb attacks and other violence, the United Nations Iraq mission said on Thursday.

Tensions are at their highest since US troops pulled out in December 2011.

The number of attacks increased sharply after security forces raided a protest camp near Kirkuk last week, triggering clashes that quickly spread to other areas including the western province of Anbar, which borders Syria and Jordan.

Jerusalem mosque to be partially demolished, Israeli court rules

An Israeli court has rejected an appeal to stop the partial demolition of a mosque in Ras al-Amoud in East Jerusalem, the mosque’s imam said.

The court ruled that a section of the Muhammad al-Fatih mosque was built without a license and must be demolished, sheikh Sabri Abu Diab told Ma’an news agency.

The imam said the section under threat is used by women worshipers.

Champions Trophy squad to be picked tomorrow

Pak prosecutor handling Mumbai attack case shot dead

A senior prosecutor handling the 26/11 Mumbai attack case and Benazir Bhutto assassination case was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen in the Pakistani capital today, police said.

Gunmen riding a motorcycle fired at the car of Federal Investigation Agency prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfizar Ali in the busy commercial area of Karachi Company at 7.30 am.

Ali, who was driving, was hit by several bullets and lost control of the car. The vehicle hit a woman crossing the road and she too died later in hospital.

His bodyguard, Frontier Corps trooper Farman Ali, was injured in the attack.

Pakistani prisoner attacked in Jammu jail

A Pakistani prisoner in Kot Bhalwal jail on the outskirts of Jammu was critically injured when he was attacked by a fellow prisoner, a senior police official said Friday.

The Pakistani prisoner was attacked by a former Indian Army soldier. The prisoner, who was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, had suffered serious head injuries and was in a coma, doctors said.

Doctor booked for raping woman in hospital

A doctor allegedly raped a young woman while she was undergoing treatment at his hospital here, police said today.

Dr William Jacob admitted the 24-year-old victim at his private hospital in Diva township of Thane district last month following an illness, Mumbra police station sub-inspector Laxman B Rathod said.

According to the complaint lodged by the woman, on April 24, while she was in the hospital, the doctor administered her saline mixed with sedatives due to which she fell unconscious following which the accused raped her, Rathod said.

Heart, kidneys, stomach missing in Sarabjit’s body, finds autopsy report

Even as autopsy of Sarabjit Singh’s body was conducted at Patti hospital in Amritsar to ascertain the cause of death and to cross-check the claims of Pakistan over the same and the time of death, it shockingly turned out that Pakistan had sent the dead body of Sarabjit without the vital organs like heart, kidneys and stomach.

A panel of five doctors, consisting of heads of the departments of Forensic, Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics, Surgery and Pathology from Amritsar Medical College, conducted the post-mortem of Sarabjit’s body on Thursday night.
