Pakistan condemns attack on prisoner in Indian jail

Pakistan Friday condemned the attack on a Pakistani prisoner in an Indian jail and said it was “obvious retaliation” to the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in Lahore.

“We have learnt with deep concern that a Pakistani prisoner, Sanaullah, who was serving life imprisonment in a jail in (Jammu), was attacked this (Friday) morning and as a result has received grievous injuries,” the foreign ministry said.

Sarabjit’s skull injury contributed to death: autopsy report

Indian national Sarabjit Singh, who died after a brutal assault by fellow inmates in a Pakistani jail, suffered massive internal bleeding because of a head injury, according to an initial autopsy report.

“It seems that a 5 cm-wide injury on the top of Sarabjit Singh’s skull contributed to his death,” said one of the members of the medical board that conducted the autopsy.

The member, who did not want to be identified, said the board found some minor injuries on Sarabjit’s face, neck and arms.

2 women die of burns in South Zone area

In two different incidents occurred in South Zone area, two women died in incidents of accidental burning. The incidents occurred under Rainbazar and Husaini Alam police station limits.

According to Rainbazar police 30-year-old Nusrath Begum, wife of Haji Ghulam, resident of Aman Nagar accidently caught fire while cooking. She died of burns.

According to Husaini Alam police 40-year-old N Chandra daughter of Shivlal, resident of Puranapul used to stay with her brother. She suffered burn injuries while cooking on April 20. Yesterday night she succumbed to burn injuries.

Youth drowns while swimming

A 19-year-old youth drowned while he was swimming at Jedimetla area.

Syed Abdul Ali, son of Khaleel Ali, resident of Roda Mistry Nagar went to Porbandar Nagar area for a swim along with his friends. Abdul Ali worked in a Bakery. He drowned while swimming with his friends.

Police has registered a case and investigations are on.

Saif Ali Khan says it was a conscious decision to not play the lead in his upcoming home production ‘Go Goa Gone’ as he was more interested in the project as a producer.

Four teaching hospitals get in-charges

The State Government has issued orders appointing in-charges to four teaching hospitals in the State.

Dr U Suya Kumari is appointed in-charge of Vijayawada Government hospital while Dr N Nookaraju will head the Mental Health Hospital, Visakhapatnam. Dr M Chandrasekhar will be head of Gandhi Hospital in city while Dr Ramakrishnudu has been appointed as Superintendent of MGM hospital.

The Government also issued orders appointing DR VV Sasthry as Principal of Gandhi Medical College and Dr K Venkatesh as Additional in-charge. (INN)

Over 2.47 lakh appear for Polycet

The Entrance Examination for admission into Polytechnics i.e., Polytechnic Common Entrance Test (POLYCET) – 2013 was conducted smoothly across the State on Thursday.

Of 2,51,817 candidates, who registered for the exam, as many as 2,47,053 or 98.1 per cent appeared for the exam. They include 1,80,866 boys and 66,187 girls. The key of the exam will be notified on May 7 and results will be declared on May 17.

The counselling will commence from June 6, according to Commissioner of Technical Education Ajay Jain. (INN)

‘N Korea supplied nukes to Libya, Syria via AQ Khan’

North Korea used disgraced Pakistani nuclear scientist AQ Khan’s notorious network to supply atomic materials to Libya and Syria, the Pentagon has said, as it warned against Pyongyang’s proliferation efforts.

“One of our gravest concerns about North Korea’s activities in the international arena is its demonstrated willingness to proliferate nuclear technology,” Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said in a report running into 20 pages.

SHRC directs Govt to submit report on Fertility Clinics

The State Human Rights Commission has directed the State Government to submit a report on Medical Labs that are carrying out illegal IVF (Test tube babies) and 4D Ultra Sound sex determination tests in the State.

On a complaint filed by High Court lawyer Arun Kumar, the SHRC has directed the Chief Secretary, Medical and Health Department Principal Secretary and Director General of Police to submit a report on the status of such illegal clinics and Labs.

The Commission has asked the government to submit its report by July 31.

Power cuts to continue in State

The on-going power cuts in both urban and rural areas will continue despite the reduction of gap in demand-supply position.

This was stated by APTRANSCO Chairman and Managing Director Hiralal Samriya while addressing a press conference here on Thursday. He said that the present power cuts imposed at District (two-hours), Municipal areas/Towns (four hours) and mandal level (eight hours) would be continued as usual. He said the continuance of power cuts was aimed at filling the gap between the demand-supply and fill the deficit.

Two SBI officials among 8 held in fake cheque scam

Bihar police have arrested eight people, including two officials of the State Bank of India, for their alleged involvement in withdrawing cash running into crores of rupees from government accounts using forged cheques, officials said Friday.

Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Ravinder Kumar said that the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of the state police have busted an inter-state gang and arrested eight of its members.

“EOU have arrested eight people, including kingpin Sunny Priyadarshi, from Patna, two from New Delhi and one from Kolkata in this connection,” he said.

Over 6,500 Indians in jails in 112 foreign countries

Over 6,500 Indian nationals are jailed in foreign countries, with a majority of them in the Gulf countries of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, the answer to a Right to Information (RTI) application has revealed.

In reply to a Right to Information (RTI) application filed by Subhash Chandra Agarwal dated April 4, 2013, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said there are 6,569 Indians held in jails in 112 foreign countries.

“The number of prisoners keeps changing,” the ministry added.

Sri Lankan Muslim politician arrested

A Muslim politician and government critic arrested in Sri Lanka must be immediately released or charged with an internationally recognizable criminal offence, Amnesty International said.

Azad Sally, leader of Sri Lanka’s newly formed Muslim Tamil National Alliance, was reportedly taken into custody Thursday by the intelligence services for unknown reasons, Amnesty said.

Sally has been an outspoken critic of a Buddhist group, Bodu Bala Sena, which has since February allegedly attacked Muslim and Christian religious establishments.

Inquiry on in attack on Pakistani prisoner: Shinde

An inquiry was on in the attack on a Pakistani prisoner in a jail in Jammu, union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said here Friday.

“The incident took place at 8-8.30 a.m. There was an attack on a Pakistani inmate in Jammu jail. An inquiry is being conducted,” Shinde told reporters.

He, however, refused to comment if it was in retaliation to the attack and consequent death of Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan.

Sarabjit Singh, who had spent over 20 years in jail in Pakistan, died Thursday in a Lahore hospital. He had been on death row after being convicted as a terrorist.

Pakistani prisoner in coma after attack in Jammu jail

A Pakistani prisoner was critically injured when he was attacked by a fellow prisoner in the high security Kot Bhalwal jail here, police said Friday, a day after Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died after being attacked in Lahore.

Sanaullah, a resident of Sialkot, was attacked by former Indian Army soldier Vinod Kumar, convicted for murder, following an altercation Friday morning, a police officer said.

Filmmaker Krishna D.K., who is awaiting the release of his zombie comedy film “Go Goa Gone”, says the budget of the film is much lesser than any of Saif Ali Khan “kind of films”.

The movie is produced by Illuminati Films, co-owned by Saif, who has also acted in the movie.

“I would say the budget of the film is very low. I am not allowed to reveal the budget of the film, but I can assure you that this film is made in much lesser budget than any Saif kind of films,” Krishna told IANS.

Parliament again disrupted over coal blocks allocation

Both houses of parliament were Friday adjourned till noon as the BJP persisted with its demand for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks.

The Lok Sabha was adjourned minutes after the day’s proceedings began at 11 a.m. as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members advanced to the speaker’s podium demanding the prime minister’s resignation over the issue.

Speaker Meira Kumar’s efforts to calm BJP members proved futile and she adjourned the house till 12 noon.

Loans to get cheaper as RBI cuts key policy rates

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Friday cut key policy rates by 0.25 percent, a move that will make auto, housing and other loans cheaper and help accelerate economic growth.

The repo rate, the rate at which the central bank lends to commercial banks, has been cut by 0.25 percent to 7.25 percent.

The reverse repo rate, the rate that RBI pays to commercial bank on their parked money , has also been lowered by 0.25 percent to 6.25 percent.

Most adults get 13pc of daily calories from added sugar

Most Americans get around 13 percent of their calories from added sweeteners, a new study suggests.

The report suggests that if you are like most adults, you’re probably eating, or drinking, too many “added sugars” in the form of sugar, honey, maple syrup, and high fructose corn syrup, the New York Daily News reported.

Researchers at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics examined survey data from thousands of American adults, finding that most people get a whopping 13 percent of their total calories from added sugars alone.

Parliament adjourned over coal block issues, Chinese incursion

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were again disrupted Friday as opposition members created a ruckus over the coal block allocations and Chinese incursion in Ladakh.

In both the houses, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) persisted with its demand for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s resignation over irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks, while the Samajwadi Party raised slogans over the incursion by Chinese troops in Ladakh’s Depsang area.

Both houses lost the crucial question hour and were first adjourned till noon, minutes after proceedings began at 11 a.m..

Indian workers in Saudi Arabia can regularise visa status

In a bid to address the problems arising out of Saudi Arabia’s new labour policy, Indian workers who have travelled to that Gulf nation legally will be allowed to regularise their visa status.

In a meeting of the India-Saudi Arabia joint panel formed to look at the issue, it was decided that Indians who have travelled to Saudi Arabia legally can register with Saudi authorities during the three-month amnesty period currently underway to have their visa status regularised, get new jobs or return to India if they chose to do so, local media reported Thursday.

India top destination of remittances from Qatar

India topped the list of countries to which remittances have been sent by expatriate workers in Qatar in the period 2006-2012, according to a new report.

The annual report of the Qatar Chamber, the representative body of the private sector in that Gulf nation, said that of the $60 billion remitted by foreign workers in the period, 54 percent went to Asian nations with India leading the pack and the Philippines following, The Peninsula newspaper reported Thursday.

Arab nations accounted for 28 percent while the US and Egypt trailed the list.
