Admissions in MANUU: last date 6th May

Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) will close admission process on Monday. Last date for submission of filled in applications is 6th May 2013. The only University offering courses at higher level through Urdu medium, has introduced three new regular courses i.e., B.Tech. & Ph.D. in Computer Science and Ph. D. in Translation from the new academic year.

Man beaten, knifed to death in Rome

A 49-year-old Egyptian migrant died in a hospital in the Italian capital after he was beaten and stabbed.

The attack took place in Rome’s southern Eur suburb.

Witnesses said the man was set upon by two other migrants, possibly Romanians, who fled after the attack Friday.

The Egyptian was rushed to the nearby Sant’Eugenio hospital, but he died of his injuries soon after being admitted.

Police said the man was himself carrying a knife.

Condition of Pak prisoner “stable”: India

The condition of Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay was “stable”, India said today while terming as “regrettable” the incident in Jammu jail where he was injured during a scuffle with another inmate and assured the guilty will be punished even as Pakistan sought his urgent repatriation.

Minorities Cell Constituted in Osmania University

Osmania University has constituted a Minorities Cell and appointed Mr. Mohammed Ansari, Assistant Professor, Department of Linguistics, University College of Arts of Osmania University as its first Director for a period of 1 year.

Warrant against Akbaruddin Owaisi cancelled

Giving timely respite to Mr. Akbaruddin Owaisi, MIM MLA of Chandrayangutta constituency, 7th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Nampally Criminal Court cancelled the Non-bailable warrant. Mr. Mohammed Abdul Azeem, Advocate had submitted a petition for this. After hearing his petition the court cancelled the warrant but it instructed the MLA to be present in the court on 9th May.

Two Brothers got injured by attack by women

Last night two unidentified women attacked two youths namely Ilyas and Adnan who were seriously injured. They are brothers the incident took place at 8 pm in Chota Bazar area of Golconda. Ilyas and Adnana were shifted to nearby corporate hospital where there condition is reported to be beyond danger.

Campaigning ends for Karnataka assembly election

Campaigning for the Karnataka assembly election came to an end on Friday evening.

The Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements for the polling day on Sunday, with extensive security arrangements in the state. Over 1,35,000 security personnel will be deputed for the assembly election.

9954 polling booths have been identified as hyper sensitive, 14,209 booths sensitive and 149 booths as naxal prone. Extra protection will be provided to these booths.

The voting process will begin at 7 a.m. and conclude at 5 p.m.

Security of Pakistani Prisoners in the state increased

In view of the attack on Pakistani National Sanaullah by co-prisoners, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India has issued instructions to all the states to ensure the security of Pakistani prisoners in the respective states. On receiving these instructions, the security arrangements of the Pakistani prisoners in the state have been increased.

Probe opens after Italian reporter goes missing in Syria

Prosecutors in Rome have opened a kidnapping and anti-terrorism investigation after Italian journalist Domenico Quirico disappeared in war-torn Syria.

Quirico, a correspondent for Turin’s la Stampa newspaper and an experienced war reporter, entered Syria April 6 to cover the civil war and the paper has not heard from him since April 9.

In a statement Friday on World Press Freedom Day, an European Union official expressed “disquiet” over the fate of the 62-year-old Quirico.

In Burma and Sri Lanka, Anti-Muslim Nationalism Opens Wounds

Recent incidents of anti-Muslim religious nationalism in Sri Lanka and Burma, ostensibly in defense of the Theravada Buddhist faith held by the majority, have opened fresh wounds.

Growing violence appears in danger of spinning completely out of control in Burma, most lately in the town of Okkan on the outskirts of Rangoon, where a Buddhist mob burned as many as a dozen homes and ransacked a shop shouting “Let’s destroy the property of Muslims.” Two mosques were desecrated and Qurans were torn to pieces.

Ekta Kapoor evaded tax to the tune of Rs. 30 crore, IT officials

The Income Tax department, which conducted raids at the residence of Ekta Kapoor and her Balaji Telefilms office, said that the filmmaker and TV producer has evaded taxes to the tune of Rs. 30 crore.

The raids were carried out on Tuesday (April 30) by a team of over 100 officers. Sleuths from the department swooped down on seven locations across the city, including her father Jeetendra and Ekta’s residence in suburban Juhu, as part of the searches.

Dalit girl assaulted; two students held

Two students were arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 19-year-old Dalit girl student at Narasaraopet, the police said today. The incident occurred when the victim visited the two accused Y Sanjiva Reddi, and his friend S Siva Kumar, who allegedly sexually assaulted her and clicked her nude photographs, police said. After a complaint was lodged, the police arrested both students and sent the girl for medical examination to a government hospital. PTI

Sex ratio in Andhra Pradesh improved since 2001

Surfacing among the top five performing states in terms of sex ratio, Andhra Pradesh has recorded 993 women per 1000 men in 2011 census compared to 978 women in 2001. As per the 2011 census, the total population of Andhra Pradesh is 8,45,80,777, of which the rural population accounts for 5,63,61,702 (66.64 per cent) and urban population is 2,82,19,075 (33.36 per cent). Of the total population, 4,24,42,146 (50.18 per cent) are males and 4,21,38,631 (49.82 per cent) are females, the office of the Director of Census Operations, Andhra Pradesh, said in a release issued here today.

NDA MPs meet Prez, seek intervention on Chinese incursion

MPs of BJP-led NDA on Friday met President Pranab Mukherjee to express concern over Chinese incursions into Ladakh and the manner in which the case of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh was handled by the government.

The delegation, led by NDA working chairperson LK Advani, met Mukherjee in the Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted a memorandum seeking his intervention on the two issues.

They demanded that Mukherjee discuss these issues with the UPA government and ask them to take appropriate action.

Motive of attack on Sarabjit was to kill him: Autopsy panel

The motive behind the attack on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani prison was to “kill him,” a panel of doctors, which conducted the second autopsy, said today.

“It was a clear case…the motive of attack (on Sarabjit) was to kill him,” Dr HS Rai, Head of Forensic Science Department, Government Medical College and Hospital here, who led the five-member doctors’ panel, said.

Private college lab assistant throws acid on staff, girls

A lab assistant in a local private college today allegedly threw acid on two staff injuring them and two girl students, and later tried to commit suicide by consuming cyanide, police said. Police said Muthusamy (47) threw acid on Ravisankar and Laxmansamy this afternoon over some personal dispute.

Khurshid leaves on three-day Iran visit

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid left on a three day visit to Iran on Friday.

Khurshid is visiting Teheran to co-chair the 17th session of India-Iran Joint Commission meeting with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi.

The meeting is aimed at expanding bilateral ties and mutual co-operation between the two countries.

India and Iran have been holding discussions at regular intervals on issues related to economic co-operation under the Joint Commission mechanism which was set up in 1983.

The last meeting of the JCM was held in 2010 in New Delhi.

6569 Indians lodged in foreign jails, Saudi Arabia tops the list with 1691

A total of 6,569 Indian nationals are currently lodged in prisons of 67 foreign countries, including 254 in Pakistan, according to information accessed by a Kerala-based RTI activist from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Arab countries topped the list with Saudi Arabia (1691), Kuwait (1161) and UAE (1012), according to the information provided by the MEA on April 22 to lawyer and RTI activist DB Binu in Thiruvananthapuram.

Pakistani PM promises smooth transition after May 11 elections

Pakistan’s interim Prime Minister, Mir Hazar Khan Khoso Friday announced that he would transfer the reins of the government to the elected representative on completion of the May 11 parliamentary elections.

“We will not accept extension in the tenure of the caretaker government at any cost and under no circumstances,” he told the nation in a televised address, reported Xinhua.

Khoso condemned Taliban attacks on the political activists and election candidates and said the government will not allow anyone to disturb peace and play with life and property of the people or destroy peace.

Sikhs burn Sajjan Kumar’s effigy

Various Sikh groups Friday staged protests and burnt effigies of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar here over his acquittal in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.

On the nationwide call by Sikh organisations, members of the Guru Singh Sabha organised a protest and burnt effigies of Congress leaders Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Titler.

Guru Singh Sabha president Jasvinder Singh blamed the UPA government and its chairperson Sonia Gandhi for not taking action against the culprits responsible for anti-Sikh riots, brutal killings and arson.

Udaipur doctor arrested for taking bribe

A senior doctor at a government hospital in Rajasthan’s Udaipur district was arrested Friday for taking bribe of Rs.500 for treating a breast cancer patient, police said.

Dr. Suresh Kumar Dangayach, the head of radio therapy department at Maharana Bhupal Hospital in Udaipur, 300 km from Jaipur, was trapped by the state police’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Bhupal Singh Chudawat, Shyam Sundar Suthar had recently lodged complaint against the doctor.
