Indian-origin man arrested in Canada in murder case

An Indian-origin man has been arrested in Canada in connection with the 2012 murder of another Indian-origin man.

Dinesh Suntharalingam, 23, was arrested from his home at Markham in the Greater Toronto Area of the Canadian province of Ontario in connection with the killing of Sathiyaraj Mahindran, media reported Friday.

The body of 21-year-old Mahindran was found at the edge of river Welland in King’s Bridge in the Niagara area April 21, 2012. He was reported missing the same day.

Police charged Suntharalingam with second-degree murder.

Lalu injured in freak accident

RJD president Lalu Prasad sustained injuries on his head and face when the windshield of his car broke and shards of glass hit him when he was going to Vaishali district, his personal assistant said today.

Prasad was taken to private hospital in city where he was given two stitches on the head and discharged late last night.

His PA Bhola Yadav told PTI that the accident occurred at around 10 PM when his car was crossing a pantoon bridge near Kachchi Dargah on way to Raghopur.

How type 2 diabetes develops

Researchers have developed a new mouse model, which answers the question of what actually happens in the body when type 2 diabetes develops and how the body responds to the medication.

Bilal Omar from Lund University in Sweden and one of the researchers behind the study said that the animal models for type 2 diabetes studies that earlier existed have not been optimal as they use young mice.

He said that their idea was to create a model, which resembled the situation in the development of type 2 diabetes in humans.

H7N9`s infection risks mapped

Scientists have mapped avian influenza (H7N9) risk based on the northwards migratory patterns of birds using environmental and meteorological data – from Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Jiangsu, to Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang.

The map comprises of bird migration patterns, and adding in estimations of poultry production and consumption, which are used to deduce future risk and to advice on ways to prevent infection.

New species of meat-eating dinosaur discovered

Fossil remains found in northwestern China have been identified as a new species of small theropod, or meat-eating, dinosaur.

The discovery was made by James Clark, the Ronald B. Weintraub Professor of Biology, in the Department of Biological Sciences of George Washington’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Clark, along with his then doctoral student Jonah Choiniere and a team of international researchers, found the dinosaur specimen in a remote region of Xinjiang in China in 2006.

Global warming could affect rainfall patterns

A NASA-led modelling study has provided new evidence that global warming could change future global rainfall patterns and increase the risk of both flooding and drought.

The study shows for the first time how rising carbon dioxide concentrations could affect the entire range of rainfall types on Earth.

Analysis of computer simulations from 14 climate models indicates wet regions of the world, such as the equatorial Pacific Ocean and Asian monsoon regions, will see increases in heavy precipitation because of warming resulting from projected increases in carbon dioxide levels.

Saturn’s magnetosphere changes with seasons

An undergraduate student from the University of Iowa has discovered that a process occurring in Saturn’s magnetosphere is linked to the planet’s seasons and changes with them.

The finding will help clarify the length of a Saturn day and could alter our understanding of the Earth’s magnetosphere.

Saturn’s magnetosphere is the third largest structure in the solar system, eclipsed only by the magnetic fields of the Sun and Jupiter.

Bilawal Bhutto out of Pak, not to return before polls: Report

Pakistan People’s Party chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has left on a foreign trip and will not be present in the country when it goes to polls on May 11, according to a media report on Friday.

Bilawal, 24, will not address any rallies or meetings ahead of the general election due to threats to his life, sources in the PPP were quoted as saying in the report on the website of the Dawn newspaper.

Senior PPP leader Taj Haider confirmed that consensus had been reached within the party and Bilawal had been advised not to lead the poll campaign due to serious security threats.

New gas reserve discovered in Pakistan

A consortium of companies has discovered a new gas reserve in southern Sindh province that would help reduce gas shortages in Pakistan, officials said on Friday.

Italian energy major ENI, Pakistan Petroleum Limited and Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company are partners in the consortium that made the discovery in Kirthar Fold Belt region, 270 km from Karachi, the capital of Sindh.

Musharraf’s party decides to boycott May 11 polls

The party of former Pakistan military ruler Pervez Musharraf, facing a series of legal cases over his actions while in power, on Friday said it would boycott Pakistan’s May 11 general election.

The move came in the wake of the Peshawar High Court’s order barring Musharraf from contesting polls for the rest of his life.

Musharraf has also been arrested over the imposition of emergency rule in 2007, the assassination of former premier Benazir Bhutto and the killing of Baloch leader Akbar Bugti in a 2006 military operation.

‘Boston suspect died of gunshot wounds, trauma’

The slain Boston bombings suspect died of bullet wounds and blunt trauma to head and torso after being shot by the police and run over and dragged by a vehicle, according to his death certificate.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died in an exchange of fire with the police in a neighbourhood here, three days after he and his younger brother Dzhokhar, 19, allegedly carried out the Boston Marathon bombings, killing three people and injuring more than 250.

Israel launches airstrike into Syria: Officials

Israel launched an airstrike into Syria, apparently targeting a suspected weapons site, US officials said.

The strike occurred overnight Thursday into Friday, the officials told The Associated Press. It did not appear that a chemical weapons site was targeted, they said, and one official said the strike appeared to have hit a warehouse.

The US Officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

US refuelling plane crashes in Kyrgyzstan

A US military Boeing KC-135 refuelling aircraft crashed in a mountainous area in Kyrgyzstan for unspecified reasons, the US Air Force said. The fate of the crew remained unclear.

“A US Air Force KC-135 tanker aircraft crashed today (Friday) in northern Kyrgyzstan,” the US Air Force’s 376th Air Expeditionary Wing based in the country said.

The Boeing KC-135, also known as the Stratotanker, crashed into a mountain gorge about 60 km west of the capital Bishkek, a Kyrgyzstan interior ministry spokesman said.

US unemployment rate drops

US unemployment rate edged down to 7.5 percent in April from 7.6 percent in March, its lowest level since December 2008, the Labor Department reported.

Total non-farm payroll employment increased by 165,000 last month, with the private sector creating 176,000 jobs last month. US governments at all levels shed 11,000 jobs last month against the background of government spending cuts, reported Xinhua.

In April, the number of total unemployed Americans stood at 11.66 million, down from 11.74 million in March.

Angry with Peru, Maduro calls home ambassador

President Nicolas Maduro has responded angrily to a call by Peru’s foreign minister for tolerance and dialogue in Venezuela, saying he will recall his ambassador for consultations.

The Peruvian diplomat, Rafael Roncagliolo, also called on the Union of South American Nations, of which his country is acting president, to issue a statement urging Maduro to exercise tolerance.

Maduro said yesterday that Roncagliolo’s statement showed a “lack of respect” for Venezuelan democracy.
