Karnataka gears up for assembly polls, as fractured mandate looms

Bangalore, May 4 (ANI): Karnataka will go to polls on Sunday, even as media reports suggest that there will be a fractured mandate when votes are counted on May 8. An estimated 2,900 candidates have entered the electoral fray in the state. The Indian National Congress (INC) has fielded 224 candidates for the Karnataka polls, while the BJP has given tickets to 223 candidates. The voting process will begin on Sunday at 7 a.m. and end at 5 p.m. Over 1,35,000 security personnel will be deputed for the election, which will see a battle royale for 225 state assembly seats.

Google replaces ‘Palestinian territories’ with ‘Palestine’

Google is recognizing a state of Palestine, at least on its local home page in the Palestinian territories.

Google spokesman Nathan Tyler said that they were changing the name ‘Palestinian territories’ to ‘Palestine’ across our products.

According to Fox News, the move comes after a U.N. decision last year upgrading the Palestinians” status to ‘non-member observer state’.

Israel said that Palestinian statehood should be reached through negotiations, not unilateral moves.

Dubbing serials will be cut down by 50 %

Under pressure from TV artistes, who took to streets seeking a ban on dubbing serials, the management of Maa TV channel has agreed to drastically cut down the number of serials.

We will reduce production and telecast of dubbing serials by 50 per cent from next month, Producer Allu Aravind said.

Aravind, who has a stake in Maa Entertainment channel, said that he will hold talks with all the channels producing and telecasting serials and TV artistes to broker peace.

CM cancels Ananthapuram tour

It seems trouble is brewing in the state Congress or at least the cabinet indicating some serious trouble for the bigwigs of the State.

The indication has come with Chief Minister visiting Delhi on May 6 with no clear agenda as of now. Added to this the chief minister has cancelled his Ananthapuram tour scheduled for May 6, 7 and 8.

While Delhi tour could be one reason, the leaders of the district N Raghuveera Reddy and JC Diwakar Reddy are not in very good terms with the Chief Minister.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain hospitalised in Patna

BJP national spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain is recuperating in a hospital here, a day after he had complained of experiencing pains in his chest. Hussain is admitted to a private hospital in Patna, reports quoted Bihar BJP president Mangal Pandey, as saying. He has undergone medical tests, including ECG. Preliminary medical observations said that the chest pains could have been caused by excessive gas inside his body. BJP president Rajnath Singh talked to Hussain over phone, shortly after being informed about his ill health.

Shahnawaz Hussain hospitalised

BJP national spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain has been admitted to a hospital here after he complained of chest pain.

Hussain complained of chest pain last night following which he was taken to a private hospital here, Bihar BJP President Mangal Pandey told PTI today.

Various medical tests, including ECG, were carried out.

“The problem seems to have occurred due to gas. Hussain has been kept under observation,” Pandey said.

BJP president Rajnath Singh enquired about Hussain’s health over phone, party sources said.

Man arrested for murder of mother-in-law

A 29-year-old man was arrested on Friday in Mumbai for allegedly killing his mother-in-law and grievously injuring his brother-in-law at the latter’s residence in Pune, police said on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid and the accused Selvankumar Nadar was nabbed from Dharavi area and handed over to Pune police.

Rly employee trapped for taking bribe with false promise of providing jobs

The Railway Vigilance Department has trapped a Railway employee, K S Aditya, a Trainee Fitter in the office of Senior Section Engineer, Water works at Lallaguda at Secunderabad, for allegedly accepting a bribe Rs.20, 000 from a person Linga Swamy by promising employment in Railways”.

Further investigation revealed that the employee has already received Rs 2 lakh from Linga Swamy in several installments earlier. While he was demanding a further amount of Rs.50,000 this time and accepting Rs.20,000, the employee was trapped by Vigilance Department.

CM for Delhi on May 6?

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy is likely to visit Delhi on May 6.

The visit comes close on the heels of PCC Botsa Satyanarayana submitting a report on the dissent expressed by some ministers on his style of functioning. Deputy Chief Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha, ministers K jana Reddy, Vatti Vasanth Kumar and DL Ravindra Reddy were very vocal in criticizing the style of functioning of the Chief Minister. He has been accused of taking decisions unilaterally without taking the cabinet into confidence.

CM hold meeting with ministers

With trouble brewing in the state cabinet the Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy held a meeting with a few ministers at his camp office.

Ministers S Sailajanath, Satrucherla Vijayarama Raju and Syed Mohammad Ahmadullah were among those who were present at the meeting. They are understood to have discussed the latest political situation arising out of the open dissent of some ministers and questioning the style of functioning of the Chief Ministers.

Man hangs self from tree in Delhi

A 30-year-old man committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree in a park here, police said.

The body of Rakesh Kumar was spotted by a passerby Saturday morning at Rama Park in Sarai Rohilla area of north Delhi.

Police said Kumar was depressed over family problems.

Kumar worked in a shoe factory and lived in a rented house with his mother, his sister and her children. His sister is separated from her husband.

The body has been sent for an autopsy.

The US Air Force announced its X-51A Waverider aircraft has achieved the longest hypersonic flight in history, flying for three and a half minutes on scramjet power at more than five times the speed of sound.

The final flight of the unmanned aircraft built by Boeing reached Mach 5.1 over the Pacific Ocean May 1. It travelled over 230 nautical miles in just over six minutes, reported Xinhua.

Bansal, PM should go over bribery case, says BJP

The BJP Saturday sought the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal after the latter’s nephew was arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs.90 lakh to ensure the promotion of a top railway official.

“We not only demand that Bansal be sacked, he should be prosecuted by CBI under 13 of Prevention of Corruption Act. If any public servant abuses his position to obtain benefits for himself or any other person, he or she is to prosecuted and convicted,” BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said here.

Indian American wins awards in US varsity

An Indian American student at a US university has won the changing entrepreneurship and outstanding teaching awards at an annual awards ceremony for co-founding a company that can detect bacteria in water.

Nisarg Patel of the Arizona State University (ASU) was given the awards at the annual Pitchfork Awards ceremony in the institute for co-founding HyrdoGene Biotechnologies, the College Times reported Friday.

According to Patel, his group creates biosensors that can detect bacteria in water.

Pakistani officials visit injured prisoner

Pakistani diplomats Saturday visited a Chandigarh hospital where a comatose Pakistani prisoner is being treated after being attacked by a prisoner in a Jammu jail, authorities said, adding they will be granted consular access once daily.

“Pakistani officials had consular access to Sanaullah Ranjay and also met attending doctors in Chandigarh,” tweeted external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.

The Pakistan High Commission said their diplomats visited Ranjay at 3 a.m. today Saturday and met the hospital medical board.
