Former TDP leader Dadi Veerabhadra Rao joins YSR Congress

Former Andhra Pradesh minister Dadi Veerabhadra Rao, who quit Telugu Desam Party two days ago, joined the YSR Congress here Saturday evening.

Dadi and his son Ratnakar met YSRC honorary president Y S Vijaya at her residence and formally joined the party.

Earlier in the day, Dadi met YSR Congress president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy at the Chanchalguda jail and got his nod for joining the party, despite strong opposition from party leaders in Anakapalle, Dadi’s hometown.

Congress high command summons AP CM Kiran Kumar Reddy

The Congress high command is understood to have summoned Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy to New Delhi next week in the backdrop of dissent by some of his Cabinet colleagues to his “unilateral” announcement of welfare schemes ahead of elections.

Kiran has cancelled his scheduled three-day mass contact programme in Anantapur district from Monday to be ready to go to Delhi, sources close to him said.

39 killed in Nigeria violence

At least 39 people have been killed in Nigeria’s northern state of Taraba as clashes broke out between Christians and Muslims at a funeral.

Residents said violence broke out yesterday as a funeral procession for a traditional leader passed through a Muslim area of Wukari town.

A 24-hour curfew has been imposed on the town by police.

Woman set ablaze for resisting rape bid in Rajasthan

A married woman was allegedly set ablaze in Hanumangarh district when she resisted rape attempt by a youth.

The woman, 23, was taken to a hospital in Bikaner where she succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday, police said.

She was sleeping when neighbour Jeetu sneaked into her room last night and attempted rape on her, police said.

Jeetu, who was later arrested, set the woman ablaze by pouring kerosene when she resisted and raised an alarm.

Her husband, who reached after hearing the screams, also sustained injuries while trying to douse the flames, police said.

Magistrate hearing Zakia protest petition transferred

The Metropolitan Magistrate hearing the protest petition filed by Zakia Jafri against the Supreme Court appointed SIT’s closure report giving clean chit to Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi and others in the post Godhra riots case, was transferred today as part of a routine exercise by the high court registrar.

Ajmer blast case: NIA arrests father-son duo from Vadodara

The National Investigation Agency and Vadodara Crime Branch on Saturday apprehended a father-son duo from Kashipura village in Wagodiya tehsil of the district in connection with the 2007 Ajmer dargah blast case.

The two were identofied as Jayantibhai Jamsingh Gohil and Ramesh Jayantibhai Gohil, Vadodara Police Commissioner Satish K Sharma said.

The duo was also wanted in the 2002 Best Bakery case here from the post-Godhra riots period, police sources said.

Blasts at a dargah in Ajmer, Rajasthan, in October 2007 had left three persons dead and 20 injured.

Pak prisoner, Sanaullah, in deep coma

Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was injured in a scuffle with another inmate in a Jammu jail, was critical and in deep coma at the PGIMER here.

“He is on ventilator and in deep coma. He contiues to be critically sick,” said an update on Sanaullah’s condition issued by the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research on Saturday night.

“Sanaullah remains on ventilator,” it said adding his blood pressure had been going down and his neurological status remained the same.

Finance Minister, Mr. A.Ram Narayan Reddy told that all the ministers should respect the decisions taken by the C.M. In the case of disagreement, they can resign because only those ministers have the right to continue in the cabinet who honour the decisions of the C.M. without targeting any specific minister, he warned the displeased minister to refrain from leveling charges against the C.M. He also said that depending upon the situation, the C.M. should have the discretion to take spontaneous decisions. It is the duty of the ministers to implement the decision taken by the C.M.

National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for admission into various medical colleges in the country including A.P will be held today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The candidates are required to be present at the examination center one and a half hour before the commencement of the examination. The test centers are far away and hence many students faced a lot of difficulty in locating the centers. Only Hyderabad was entered as the Center of the Examination but the exact location was not mentioned in the Hall Tickets. This caused a lot of difficulty to the candidates.

Voting begins in Karnataka, Congress hoping to regain power

Voting began in Karnataka to elect the next state assembly on Sunday morning. Antony briefs President on Chinese incursions

Defence Minister A K Antony today informed President Pranab Mukherjee about the measures taken by the Government to resolve the issue of incursion by Chinese soldiers into Indian territory in Ladakh where they have pitched tents in Daulat Beg Oldi area.

The President, who is also the supreme commander of the armed forces, was briefed by the Defence Minister on the incursion issue and the steps taken by the armed forces to tackle the situation, Government sources said in New Delhi.

Pak court extends Musharraf’s remand by 14 days

A special Pakistani anti-terrorism court here today extended the judicial remand of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf by 14 days, in connection with his decision to place judges under house arrest during the 2007 emergency.

“Pervez Musharraf’s remand is extended for judicial lock-up for 14 days, he should be presented before the court on May 18,” Judge Kausar Abbas Zaidi ordered.

Musharraf’s lawyers filed a bail application in the court and the judge fixed a hearing for May 6.

Chavan is incompetent Chief Minister: Raj Thackeray

Attacking Maharashtra Government for allegedly not providing relief to people in drought-hit areas, MNS chief Raj Thackeray said Prithviraj Chavan is an incompetent Chief Minister.
“The chief minister is incompetent and has been imposed by the Congress high command,” said Thackeray, after visiting a fodder camp, opened by his party at Kharpudi road.
Coming down heavily on the state government, Thackeray said various organisations are opening fodder camps for animals and distributing water tanks as the government has failed in its responsibility.

Chiranjeevi announces ‘Kashmir Festival 2013’ from May 13

Geelani condemns attack on Pak prisoner inside Jammu jail

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday condemned the attack on Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah inside the Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu, and said that this is an established act of revenge.

“The prisoner was mercilessly attacked and brutally injured. Right now, he is in the Chandigarh hospital fighting for his life. This is an established act of revenge. We deeply condemn this incident,” he said.

Karnataka goes to the polls

Polling began early Sunday for the 14th Karnataka legislative assembly on a brisk note, despite hot weather prevailing across the state.

With the Election Commission (EC) advancing commencement of polling by an hour to 7 a.m., hundreds of voters made a beeline to booths in many of the 223 assembly constituencies to cast their vote through electronic voting machines (EVMs).

The EC has also extended the duration of polling by an hour to 6 p.m., in view of the scorching summer heat across the state, including Bangalore.

Suspected Al Qaeda suicide bomber held in Algeria

Algerian security services have arrested a suspected Al Qaeda-linked militant carrying an explosive belt in Chlef province, a media report said.

Citing Ennahar TV, Xinhua said the 23-year-old militant was intercepted near a bus station, and had likely planned to blow himself off.

A security official said the suspect hails from Relizene province and is believed to belong to Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Two minors raped in Bihar, one arrested

Two minors were allegedly raped in two different districts in Bihar. While the accused in one case has been arrested, the other is absconding, police Saturday said.

An eight-year-old girl living in a residential school at Sikaria in Jehanabad district was raped over several days by Aneesh Kumar, a teacher in the school.

“The incident came to light Saturday when girl went home and told her mother about it,” police said.

Aneesh has been arrested and sent to jail.

In another case, a seven-year-old girl was raped by her neighbour in a village in Rohtas district, 150 km from here.
