Buddhist mobs spread fear among Myanmar’s Muslims

It was a terrifying sight: hundreds of angry, armed men on motorcycles advancing up a dusty street with no one to stop them.

Shouting at the top of their lungs, clutching machetes and iron pipes and long bamboo poles, they thrust their fists repeatedly into the air.

The object of their rage: Myanmar’s embattled minority Muslim community.

Pak Islamic body says DNA cannot be primary evidence for rape

DNA samples cannot be used as primary evidence in rape cases, an Islamic body that advises the Pakistan government today said.

The Council of Islamic Ideology, a constitutional body, ruled that Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sample is not acceptable as primary evidence in case of a rape. However, they can be used as secondary or supporting evidence.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Council chaired by Maulana Muhammad Khan Sherani. The Council announced that Islamic law and teachings contained procedures to decide cases of rape.

MP Waqf tribunal stays organisation of saffron event in Raisen

The Madhya Pradesh State Waqf Tribunal has stayed the district administration’s order allowing some Hindu organisations to perform rituals at the Old Waqf Idgah land at Mandideep in neighbouring Raisen district. The Idgah management under the state Waqf Board had recently approached the Tribunal against the local administration’s order granting permission to some organisations to perform rituals at the Idgah land from May 29 to June 6.

Indian-origin doctor charged with assaulting wife in Malaysia

An Indian-origin doctor in Malaysia is facing charges of assaulting his wife in 2009 in which a lower court had earlier acquitted him. P Mahendran, 47, was ordered by Shah Alam High Court yesterday to answer to the charge of assaulting his estranged wife, B Bhavani Devi, 41, after allowing the prosecution’s appeal against the lower court’s decision acquitting him without calling for his defence last December, the New Straits Times reported today.

Hyderabadi student commits suicide in Saudi Arabia

An 18-year-old Indian student in Saudi Arabia has allegedly committed suicide after failing in his class 12 CBSE exams, results of which were declared on Monday.

Mir Ameer Ansari from Dammam in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province was an intelligent student but took his life after failing in Mathematics, the Arab News reported today.

“He just couldn’t come to terms with the fact that he could only score 17 out of 100 in mathematics,” the report quoted a community elder as saying.

“Our prayers are with the family in these difficult hours”, the elder said.

Politicians/VIPs will soon get special commando protection

Jharkhand has decided to give special commando training to over 3000 police personnel to protect politicians and VIPs during their visits to Maoist-affected areas.

“The proposal has been pending for some time, it has been reviewed and decided that between 3000 and 4000 personnel will be given special commando training like the Special Protection Guards (SPG),” Director General of Police Rajiv Kumar told PTI here today.

After completion of training, their services would be utilized to protect VIPs and politicians,Kumar said.

Man dies after drinking three litres of cola a day

A 30-year-old Briton died after he drank three litres of cola every day, causing his lungs to swell to four times the normal weight. His mother said the man “drank absolutely excessively since he was 10 years old”.

According to the Daily Mail, Paul Inman of Haworth, West Yorkshire, would go out to buy the drink up to three times a day, and would also drink glasses of water to quench his thirst, the Bradford hearing was told.

But the huge quantities of cola drinks caused his lungs to swell to four times the normal weight, and the man died in his sleep.

Congress treats Muslims as stakeholders: Khaleequr Rahman

The Congress party has never used Muslims as its vote bank unlike many other political parties, asserted Mohammad Khaleequr Rahman, a Congress worker and member of the Andhra Pradesh Waqf Records Computerization Project.

In an interview with Saudi Gazette, he said that the Congress has always been treating Muslims as stakeholders.

PM leaves Tokyo, heads for Bangkok

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday concluded his three-day visit to Japan. He will arrive in Bangkok later in the afternoon.

The prime minister attended a bilateral summit with his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe during the visit.

In Bangkok, he will meet his Thailand counterpart Yingluck Shinawatra.

He will leave for India from Bangkok Friday morning.

‘Obama’ surfs Internet from Chinese cafe: report

President Barack Obama appears to be a regular customer of a Chinese Internet cafe, reports said, after the manager forged an identity card in the US leader’s name to help surfers avoid China’s web rules.

The card has a full-face picture of Obama, lists his correct birthday and gives his address as “White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC”, while stating his ethnicity as “Kenyan”, pictures showed.

As part of their efforts to control the web, China’s Communist rulers require Internet cafes to register users’ identity numbers before letting them go online.

Akshay downplays box office battle with Shah Rukh this Eid

This Eid two superstars – Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar – will be clashing at the box office with their respective films, but the latter says too much should not be read into this and hoped both movies will do robust business.

Ten people forced to burn their hands to prove innocence

Ten people suffered burn injuries here after they were forced to touch a hot spade at a temple to convince a villager that they had not stolen cash from his residence, police said today. A complaint was registered today with the Anand rural police by Bhula Thakor, one of the ten people who suffered burn injuries, against Soma Thakor. A month and a half ago, Rs 3 lakh in cash was stolen from the residence of Soma Thakor, a resident of Nata village of Borsad taluka.

US reacts cautiously to Pak Taliban leader’s reported death

The death of Waliur Rehman, the second-in-command of the Pakistani Taliban in a drone strike if confirmed to be true would be a big blow to the outfit, the White House said today, adding the US would continue to use the CIA-operated spy planes in the Afghan war till 2014.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney at his daily news conference did not confirm the death of Rehman today in a US drone strike in the tribal regions of Pakistan.

Syria: Assad will remain president until 2014

Syria’s foreign minister laid out a hard line, insisting that Bashar Assad will remain Syria’s president at least until elections in 2014 and might run for another term, conditions that will make it difficult for Syria’s opposition to agree to UN-sponsored talks on ending Syria’s civil war.

Any deal reached in such talks would have to be put to a referendum, Walid al-Moallem said in a TV interview yesterday, introducing a new condition that could complicate efforts by the US and Russia to bring the two sides together at an international conference in Geneva, possibly next month.

Economy recovering, infra investment needed: White House

The American economy continues to recover and strengthen from its deep recession but a lot more still needs to be done, the White House has said, noting that nation’s infrastructure sector urgently requires the boost of investments.

“We believe that the economy is continuing to recover and continuing to strengthen in the aftermath of the worst recession since the Great Depression. Indicators demonstrate that the recovery is continuing,” White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, said at his daily news conference.
