Molecular detail of HIV’s inner coat could lead to new therapies

Researchers have described for the first time the 4-million-atom structure of the HIV’s capsid, or protein shell.

The findings could lead to new ways of fending off an often-changing virus that has been very hard to conquer.

Scientists have long struggled to decipher how the HIV capsid shell is chemically put together, said senior author Peijun Zhang, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Structural Biology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Angelina Jolie is set to make her first post-mastectomy appearance on the red carpet.

According to E! News, the Oscar-winning actress will accompany fiance Brad Pitt at the premiere of his upcoming film, ‘ World War Z ,’ on Sunday, the New York Daily News reported.

Nawaz Sharif’s first speech as Pak PM to be ‘full of surprises’

Nawaz Sharif will have some surprises in store when he delivers his first speech as prime minister after taking oath on June 5, according to sources.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Sharif ( PML-N) chief presided over a high level party meeting at his residence in Raiwind where the senior leadership of his party helped him draft his speech, reports The Express Tribune.

In his first address, Sharif will present his 30-day plan, which includes cuts in non-development expenditure of up to 30 percent, including a reduction in the expenses of the central government.

As advised by the Prime Minister, President Mukherjee has directed that the additional charge of the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Law and Justice shall be given to Dr. C. P. Joshi and Kapil Sibal respectively.

Noted film maker Rituparno Ghosh passes away

Award winning Bengali filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh died of a cardiac arrest here this morning. He was 49.

According to reports, Ghosh was suffering from diseases of the pancreas. He breathed his last at 7:30 a.m. today.

Ghosh had made some of the highly acclaimed films like Raincoat starring Aishwarya Rai, Chokher Bali and The Last Lear.

Born on August 31, 1963 Ghosh was brought up in Kolkata. He started his career in advertising and his directional debut was Hirer Angti (The diamond ring). He got National film award for Best Director for his Bengali film Abohoman.

Restoration work of old Quran manuscript at Chowmahalla Palace

US police officers charged for selling drugs

Five police officers in the US state of Texas have been charged for selling the drugs they seized from drug traffickers.

The men were members of the Panama unit, a joint task force between the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office and the Police Department of the Mission city that targeted street-level drug trafficking in the city, reported Xinhua citing The Houston Chronicle website.

The unit’s members sold the drugs they seized to another drug trafficker and escorted drug loads, said prosecutors.

‘Syria has no pre-conditions for dialogue’

The Syrian government has that it has no pre-conditions for holding peace talks, except to exclude those who have Syrians’ blood smeared over their hands.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al- Moallem made the remarks Wednesday during a TV interview, saying his government has not been invited to the conference, but Damascus is ready for dialogue without pre- conditions, excluding “those who have Syrians’ blood smeared over their hands”, Xinhua reported.

`God particle’ discoverers receive prize

Physicists Peter Higgs and François Englert and the European Organization for Nuclear Research will share the 2013 Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research in recognition of their work establishing the existence of the so-called God particle, the Asturias Foundation said Wednesday.

Working independently, Higgs and Englert – along with the late Robert Brout – formulated in 1964 the existence of a subatomic particle that came to be known as the Higgs boson.

Sandwich thrown at Australian PM Julia

A white bread sandwich was hurled at Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard during a visit to a high school in Canberra, an incident she laughed off by saying the thrower “must have thought I was hungry”.

Ms Gillard was walking in a packed foyer of the Lyneham High School when the sandwich was thrown at her, according to media reports.

While she was making an announcement a salami sandwich was thrown by an unknown person.

“It was lobbed from behind, over the top of her head, and landed at her feet,” the report said.

Class 8 student gunned down in Lucknow

In a shocking incident, a student of Class 8 was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen late Wednesday, police said. The gunmen barged into a house in Indiranagar and shot Maaz Ahmad three times, hitting him in the chest and shoulder.

The boy was rushed to a trauma centre, where he was declared dead.

Chhattisgarh CM to hold all-party meet on Naxal menace

Amid criticism following the deadly attack in Bastar on a Congress convoy last Saturday which killed 27 people, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh will on Thursday hold an all-party meeting to discuss the Naxal menace.

An official said the all-party meet will discuss the Naxal issue broadly.

The Congress has meanwhile decided to boycott the meeting. According to Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das, the decision was taken both by the state CLP as well as the party leadership.

Israeli AG’s wife to confess to illegally employing Indian

The wife of Israel’s top law officer is expected to enter into a plea bargain for illegally employing an Indian migrant worker and is likely pay a fine of USD 5,400.

Three months after Aviva Weinstein, the wife of Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein, was charged with illegally employing a worker from India, she is expected to be convicted of the offence, Ynetnews reported today.

The Tel Aviv Labour Court is expected to approve the plea bargain between the Population and Immigration Authority and Weinstein, the report said.

EAMCET 2013 results likely to be released on June 5

The results of the Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Common Entrance Test (EAMCET) held on May 10, is likely to be released on June 5. JNTU sources told this and said that earlier the results were scheduled to be announced on June 2 but has been deferred to June 5.

In a meeting of EAMCET committee it was unanimously decided that the results would be released on June 5 instead of June 2.

It is said that CDs of result have been received from Intermediate Education Board and process of finalizing EAMCET ranks is in progress.

Financial aid to Mujahid’s family ‘unjustified’: BJP

BJP today demanded Governor B L Joshi’s intervention to stop financial assistance to kin of terror suspect Khalid Mujahid, who died in police custody, saying it was “unjustified”.

“A chargesheet was filed against Mujahid. Why is compensation being given to his family?” BJP’s chief spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak said.

A delegation led by state president Laxmi Kant Bajpai met the Governor and submitted a memorandum in this regard, Pathak said.

Teams should play Tests or lose status: ICC Cricket Committee

Concerned about Test matches being “postponed” to accommodate other formats, the ICC Cricket Committee has recommended that a team’s failure to play a minimum number of five-day games over a four-year period should lead to the withdrawal of its Test status.

Thieves in US stealing carpets from ATMs!

Forget cash, thieves in the US are now targeting rugs from bank ATMs to make quick cash.

Police picked up a Bronx resident named William Footman, 55, as the culprit in at least six thefts from Chase Bank ATM vestibules throughout lower Manhattan and the Upper East Side, sources said.

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance footage to determine if Footman is also behind 32 other carpet heists, sources said.

Khalid Mujahid’s family refuses to accept Rs 6 lakh cheque from UP govt

The family of terror suspect Khalid Mujahid, who died in police custody on May 18, today refused to accept the Rs 6 lakh compensation offered by Uttar Pradesh government.

On May 26, the state government had assured “justice” to Mujahid’s family and announced a financial assistance of Rs 6 lakh.

Today, Cabinet minister Paras Nath Yadav went to Mujahid’s residence at Mastana locality in Madiyahon to hand over the cheque to his kins.

But, Mujahid’s uncle, Zaheer Alam Falahi refused to take the cheque stating what the family has lost is “irreplaceable” and can’t be compensated.
