India to host sixth IBSA Summit

India is hosting the sixth IBSA (India, Brazil and South Africa) Summit in New Delhi on June 6.

The Summit in New Delhi will commemorate the 10th anniversary of establishment of IBSA. It also assumes special importance as being the last Summit in the Second cycle of IBSA Summit.

The Summit will be preceded by a number of meetings of Joint Working Groups and People-to-People Forums.

IBSA is a unique forum, which brings together India, Brazil and South Africa, three large democracies and major economies from three different continents, facing similar challenges.

This is no time for scoring points: Khurshid tells opposition

As the government came under opposition attack on dealing with Chinese incursions, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said this was not the time for scoring points but for speaking in one voice.

“Nation must give a clear signal that we speak in one voice. This is no time for scoring points,” Khurshid said here when asked about the opposition uproar over the Chinese incursions in the Depsang Valley in Ladakh.

He said the government would do what is best in the national interest and “I think we should not blow anything out of proportion”.

Tribal girls plight: NHRC issues notice to Jharkhand

National Human Rights Commission on Monday issued notices to Jharkhand and Delhi police after taking cognisance of media reports about the plight of tribal girls in cities, especially in the national capital.

The rights panel have sought reports in this connection from the DGP, Jharkhand and the Delhi Police Commissioner within four weeks.

NHRC took suo motu cognisance of media reports that hundreds of tribal girls, lured to the Metros and, in particular, Delhi on the pretext of providing employment, lead a miserable life as domestic helps.

BJP disapproves of Azam’s comment

Disapproving of UP minister Azam Khan’s claim that he was detained at a US airport as he was a Muslim, BJP on Monday said everyone going abroad is an Indian first and his religion comes later.

However, BJP spokesman Minakshi Lekhi condemned the Azam’s detention saying such incidents would continue to occur unless they were countered by united protests.

“I condemn the incident of misbehaviour with Khan. Such incidents against any Indian by any government should be protested”, BJP spokesman Minakshi Lekhi told reporters here.

Jail officials connived in assault on Sarabjit: Ex-Indian spy

A former Indian spy, who languished in Pakistani jails for two decades, Monday called the attack on death row convict Sarabjit Singh in Lahore a “pre-planned” one, carried out with the connivance of the authorities.

The spy, who claims that in 1977, he was given a blank cheque to kill deposed prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, said it was impossible for death row convicts to carry out such assaults without the connivance of authorities. Bhutto was lodged in the Lahore jail at the time, after being deposed in a military coup.

Show courage in checking speeches: SC to Centre, states

Voicing concern over hate speeches by politicians and religious leaders, the Supreme Court today asked the Central and state governments to show courage and take penal action in such cases which “disturb the basic fabric”.

The apex court said there was a need for taking concrete steps to curb such speeches and the Centre should ask state governments to apply penal provisions in dealing with those delivering such speeches.

Defence Ministry puts on hold MDL-Pipavav joint venture

Amid allegations of non-compliance and favouritism, the Defence Ministry has put on hold a joint venture between public sector Mazagon Dockyards and private sector Pipavav shipyard for building warships for Indian Navy.

The Defence Ministry has formed a Committee under an Additional Secretary-rank officer to look into the “joint venture formation, price discovery mechanism and several other aspects of the tie up between the two shipyards”, sources told PTI here.

Nigerian held at airport for not declaring USD

A Nigerian was arrested from Mumbai international airport for allegedly not declaring that he was carrying USD 80,000 with him, a customs official said today.

As per rule, passengers carrying above USD 5,000 have to give declaration before the authorities.

The man, identified as Bello Almou, was frisked on Thursday after he passed through the green channel at the Chhattrapati Shivaji Terminus airport, the official said.

A passenger faces arrest or detention if he or she passes through the green channel with undeclared goods or currency.

Indian origin schoolboy murdered in South Africa

A 16-year-old Indian origin student was stabbed to death and his elder brother wounded after a confrontation in school, media reports said on Monday.

While Dareshan Moodley was stabbed to death at Chatsworth, an area in Durban largely dominated by people of Indian origin, his 18-year-old brother Revarsheen is undergoing treatment in the city’s R.K. Khan Hospital, the Daily News newspaper reported.

260,000 died in Somali famine: Report

Officials in East Africa say a report to be released this week estimates that 260,000 people died in Somalia’s 2011 famine, more than double previous estimates.

The report by two US government-funded famine and food agencies gives the highest toll from Somalia’s 2011 famine.

One previous estimate said between 50,000 and 100,000 people died. A Western official briefed on the report told The Associated Press that it says 260,000 people died, and that half the victims were 5 and under.

Mother in UK forced 14-year-old to get pregnant

A British judge says a woman who was desperate for another child forced her 14-year-old daughter to get pregnant using syringes of donor sperm.

High Court judge Peter Jackson said the mother had behaved in “a wicked and selfish way” that almost defied belief.

The judge said the woman, an American living in Britain with three adopted children, hatched the plan after she was prevented from adopting a fourth.

The plan involved attempting to inseminate her eldest daughter with syringes of sperm purchased over the Internet.

British exam board outsources marking to India

A major exam board has become the first in Britain to outsource marking to India as part of a cost-cutting project aimed at speeding up the assessment process.

City & Guilds has been sending off thousands of papers to be marked by an education firm based in Bangalore as part of a pilot scheme, ‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported.

It had started outsourcing marking to MeritTrac as part of the scheme launched 18 months ago.

Syrian PM on TV after surviving assassination

Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi was seen on state TV’s live report meeting government officials on Monday after surviving an assassination attempt in Damascus.

Appearing totally unharmed in the footage, al-Halqi was reportedly discussing economic matters with members of the Syrian cabinet, reports Xinhua.

But he did not talk about the details of the blast, which occurred in Damascus’ western neighbourhood al-Mazzeh Monday and left at least eight people dead.

One of al-Halqi’s escorts is believed to have been killed in the attack, reports said.

Afghan diplomat among 8 killed in suicide blast in Peshawar

An Afghan diplomat was among the eight people killed in Monday morning’s suicide blast in Pakistan’s northwest city of Peshawar, reported local media Dunya.

There is no official confirmation about the report yet. The killed diplomat, namely Qari Hilal, was working for the Afghan Consulate in Peshawar.

Petition filed to send Sarabjit to UK for better treatment

A Pakistani lawyer on Monday sought court’s intervention to send Indian national Sarabjit Singh, comatose in a Lahore hospital after a brutal assault, to Britain for better medical treatment.

Barrister Zafarullah filed a petition in the Lahore Registry of the Supreme Court asking it to direct authorities to send Sarabjit to Britain for treatment.

He also asked the court to free Sarabjit and another 120 death row prisoners as they had been held in prison for a period equivalent to a life sentence.

Taliban threats are to sabotage elections: Pak Minister

The threats from the Taliban and other militant groups to political parties are part of a “very organised campaign” to sabotage Pakistan’s landmark general election, Information Minister Arif Nizami said on Monday.

“This is an existential threat and it’s not new. There is a very organised campaign to sabotage the election,” Nizami said during an interaction with members of the foreign media.

There is a “clear and present danger” from militants, who want to “eliminate candidates” and frighten voters, he said.

Aircraft crashes at base in Afghanistan

A civilian cargo aircraft crashed at Bagram Air Field, north of the Afghan capital, soon after takeoff on Monday, the US-led military coalition said.

It is not immediately known if there were casualties. Taliban quickly claimed responsibility for the crash, but the coalition denied that, said in a statement, “Taliban’s claims are false. There was no enemy activity or involvement during this incident.”

Govt to open 7,000 new bank branches every year: Chidambaram

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, who was on a weekend visit to his parliamentary constituency of Sivagangai in Tamil Nadu, has revealed that the government has plans to open at least 7000 new bank branches every year across the country.

He was speaking to media after inaugurating the State Bank of India”s new branch at the Sivagangai Collectorate. Chidambaram said that this means that at least 20 branches would be opened across the country per day.

He said that he expected that by the end of March 2014, all banks in the country would have an ATM facility.
