Act against hate speech makers, Supreme Court tells government

Holding that hate speeches targeting a section of society were weakening the country’s social fabric, the Supreme Court on Monday urged the central and the state governments to demonstrate courage and proceed against political and religious authors of these speeches. A bench of Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, Justice Vikramjit Sen and Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde told the government that it must have courage to take action against the political and religious leaders making hate speeches against the targeted population.

FBI takes DNA samples from family home of Boston Marathon bombing suspect’s widow

Investigators on Monday removed bags of evidence including some containing DNA samples from the home in Rhode Island where the widow of suspected Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been living, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

FBI agents spent hours at the home of Katherine Russell’s parents in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and came out carrying bags marked as DNA samples, a person familiar with the case said.

Sanjiv Bhatt did not attend Narendra Modi’s February 2002 meeting: SIT

The Supreme Court-appointed SIT on Monday said that as per all the evidence gathered, IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt was not present during the high-level meeting held on February 27, 2002, in which Chief Minister Narendra Modi had allegedly instructed the police to go soft on rioters.

Bhatt had filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court in which he said he was present during the meeting in which Modi had allegedly instructed police to give the rioters room to “vent out their anger” and to “teach a lesson” to those involved in Godhra train burning incident.

Before his run-in with the Boston airport authorities, UP’s Urban Development Minister Azam Khan also reportedly accused the security staff at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi of being “anti-Muslim”.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, when Khan was on his way to Boston as part of the delegation accompanying Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. The Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha member, Chaudhary Munabbar Saleem, went to the airport to meet Khan, but was reportedly not allowed inside the VVIP lounge.

Six-year-old raped by rickshaw-puller in Delhi

A six-year-old girl was raped by a 35-year-old rickshaw-puller here, police said Monday. The attacker has been arrested.

The incident was reported late Sunday evening from Khayala area in west Delhi.

According to police, the victim was playing outside her house when rickshaw-puller Shambhu Shah, who lived in neighbourhood, lured her into his house and raped her. The victim’s mother later saw her crying outside the house.

The child was taken to a hospital where rape was confirmed.

Police said the attacker was arrested from his house late Sunday night.

Kerala: 9-year-old drives Ferrari, father arrested

The father of a nine year-old boy, who drove a Ferrari F 430 recently with his five-year- brother along side, causing widesperad outrage, was arrested today and released on bail.

Police sources said Mohd Nisham was arrested by Peramangalam police here, which is investigating the case.

He came with the vehicle and was arrested. Since it was a bailable offence, he was granted bail on furnishing two surities of Rs 5000 each, the officer investigating the case told PTI.

The Ferrari was seized by police and returned to the owner with the direction to produce it in court whenever ordered.

3 held, released on bail in Bhopal hospital building collapse case

(Pervez Bari): A case of death by negligence has been registered against three persons including two Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, (BHEL) officials in connection with the collapse of ceiling of Kasturba Gandhi Hospital on April 26, wherein three persons were killed and more than two dozen were injured, under Section 304-A of IPC – which says culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

19-year-old held for raping 14-year-old sister

A 19-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly raping his 14-year-old sister, who is reportedly seven months pregnant, police said today.

The accused raped the girl around a year ago and repeatedly thereafter, police said.

The matter came to light yesterday, when the victim was rushed to a hospital in Kalwa after she started feeling uneasy and vomited, they said.

“Doctors who examined the girl concluded that she was seven months pregnant, based on which we slapped charges of rape on the accused,” police said, adding that due to social issues, they would not reveal any names.

Amar Singh calls Azam Khan ‘stupid’ for blaming Salman Khurshid over US fiasco

Expelled Samajwadi Party member Amar Singh today slammed senior party leader Azam Khan for his remark that External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid was behind his detention at the Boston airport and termed his statement as ‘stupid’ and ‘cheap’.

Singh also stated that as a frequent foreign flier, he is aware of the fact that international security standards are alike everywhere and one has to abide by it.

“This is a cheap statement, stupid statement to make…This is very disgusting and damaging statement…,” he said.

Seven Maoists killed in Jharkhand

Seven alleged Maoists were killed in a gun battle with security forces in Jharkhand Monday, police said.

The shootout between the Maoists and the security forces, which included state police force and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), took place in the Piri forest area of Latehar district, which is around 130 km from here.

Three bodies of the Maoist rebels were recovered, but the rebels managed to escape with the bodies of four of their cadres, police claimed. The shootout lasted for about five hours.

Syria’s special envoy meets Pakistan president

A special envoy of Syrian President Faisal Meqdad called on Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari Monday to brief him on the current situation in Syria, the foreign ministry said.

Zardari, while reaffirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, emphasized the need to respect the “democratic aspirations of the Syrian people”, Xinhua quoted a Pakistani statement as saying.

The president also expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and stressed the need for a broad national dialogue and political reconciliation.

China biggest enemy of India, Pakistan no threat: Mulayam

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav Monday accused the UPA government of being “weak and cowardly” over the incursion of Chinese troops in Ladakh and warned that China “is the biggest enemy” of India but “Pakistan is no threat”.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the former defence minister alleged that the Chinese incursion was aimed at annexing Indian territory.

Dec 16 gang-rape victim’s phone found at accused’s home, court told

The mobile phone of the Dec 16 gang-rape victim was recovered from the house of one of the accused, a prosecution witness told the fast track court here trying the case.

“(Accused) Vinay Sharma took out a polythene from a portion of the jhuggi and from this, took out one Nokia mobile phone model 3110. The IMEI of this mobile was checked and tallied with the IMEI number of the victim’s phone,” said a Delhi Police sub inspector who was part of the police team that had accompanied Sharma and other accused Pawan Gupta to their residences for searches.

Bangladesh to get first woman parliament speaker

Bangladesh will get its first ever woman speaker for its parliament as the ruling Awami League parliamentary party unanimously nominated Minister of Women and Child Affairs Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury for the post Monday evening. reported Xinhua.

She is likely to be elected without contest as the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by former prime minister Khaleda Zia is boycotting the parliament and so far there was no words from BNP that it will contest for the post.

The post fell vacant as Speaker Abdul Hamid was installed as the president of the country last week.

Advani’s plane makes unscheduled landing in Hyderabad

An aircraft carrying senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L. K. Advani made an unscheduled landing at the old airport at Begumpet here Monday, after developing a technical snag.

Advani was on his way from New Delhi to Bangalore to campaign for BJP for the next month’s elections in Karnataka, party sources said.

The former deputy prime minister had to wait for nearly two hours at the airport before Karnataka Chief Minister Jagdish Shettar reached the airport in his special aircraft. Advani later left for Bangalore in the chief minister’s plane.

Coal scam: Attorney General Vahanvati in dock?

With turbulence refusing to subside for the crisis-ridden government, the Additional Solicitor General, Harin Rawal, Monday blamed the Attorney General G.E.Vahanvati of influencing the CBI probe into coal scam.

He said that besides coal scam, the shadows of Attorney General Vahanvati could be deciphered in other scam related investigations by the probing agency.

Eight confirmed dead in China landslide

Eight villagers have been confirmed dead in China’s Guizhou province following a landslide Saturday, after the last body was retrieved Monday afternoon.

The landslide, which occurred in Mawo Village near Guizhou’s Bijie city, had trapped eight local villagers. It was triggered by the lingering rainfall in the region, Xinhua quoted local authorities as saying.

A total of 76 people have been relocated after the landslide.

Abu Dhabi and Uganda have held talks over enhancing bilateral relations and expanding avenues of trade and economic cooperation between the two nations.

The discussion was held between Abu Dhabi’s crown prince General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Uganda’s Prime Minister Al Bahr Palace Amama Mbabazi.

Tourist bus falls from cliff in China, 3 killed

Three women tourists — two Taiwanese and one Chinese-American — were today killed when their bus overturned and fell from a cliff in central China’s Hunan Province.

The accident took place at about 11 am when a bus carrying 16 people — a local driver and tourist guide, six Taiwanese tourists and eight Chinese-American tourists — on an expressway in Hanshou County of Changde overturned and fell from a 10-metre-high cliff, state-run Xinhua news agency quoted the local government as saying in a statement.

Hyderabad Traffic Police goes high-tech

In order to improve traffic enforcement in the city, Hyderabad Traffic Police (HTP) has equipped itself with new generation devices.

Director General of Police V Dinesh Reddy, who inaugurated the integrated e-challan system and dedicated a slew of latest traffic devices to the department, said these equipment can effectively enforce traffic in the long run.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) C V Anand told reporters that they had received a lot of complaints with regard to the manual challans issued for various traffic violations.

Two persons killed, 15 injured in Assam, indefinite curfew imposed

Two persons were killed and more than 15 injured, including senior police officials, in police firing and mob violence, following which indefinite curfew was clamped in two areas of Assam’s Goalpara district on Monday.

Violence broke out in Mailapathar area near Rakshashini forest after the body of a 50-year old cowherd, who was missing since yesterday, was recovered this morning, official sources said.

Telangana Congress leaders to show support to agitating MPs

In a bid to support the party MPs, who have undertaken a 48-hour sit-in at Parliament premises to highlight the separate Telangana demand, some of the Congress leaders from the region may go to Delhi on Tuesday.

Some Telangana Congress MLAs and other leaders may go to the national capital tomorrow to express solidarity with the agitating MPs, party sources said here.

In an embarrassment to Congress, five party MPs from Telangana today launched a 48-hour sit-in at the main gate of Parliament in support of the separate statehood demand.
