13 killed in Syria bombing

At least 13 people were killed and 70 wounded when a car bomb went off Tuesday in the heart of the Syrian capital Damascus in front of the old headquarters of Syria’s interior ministry, the state-TV said.

The blast targeted the rear gate of the ministry in al-Marjeh Square, Xinhua reported citing media reports which added that many of those wounded are in critical condition.

The new building of the ministry is located in the Damascus’ district of Kafar Souseh.

Ishrat case: Gujarat court reserves order on cop’s arrest warrant

A special CBI court here today reserved its order on a revision application seeking the issuance of arrest warrant against IPS officer P P Pande, who is an accused in the 2004 alleged fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others.

Special CBI Judge Gita Gopi today concluded the hearing and said that she would pronounce the order on May 2.

Rail union members block rail traffic

Rail movement on New Delhi- Amritsar and New Delhi-Jammu route was today disrupted as Northern Railway Men’s Union (NRMU) members squatted on the tracks demanding arrest of persons who allegedly attacked and injured some of their members in a clash two days back.

A senior railway official said that NRMU members sat on a dharna at different places including Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Ferozepur and Jammu Tawi, affecting the rail traffic for about an hour.

Obese men in 20s may die in middle age

Families of chubby youngsters, beware! Men who turn obese in their early 20s are significantly less likely to reach their middle age, a new study published in the British Medical Journal has suggested.

Also such youngsters are also up to eight times more likely to suffer diabetes, potentially fatal blood clots or a heart attack, Daily Mail reported.

It has been well-known how obesity in adulthood could pose a risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. But it was not clear earlier whether obesity in early adulthood strengthened that risk.

Sajjan Kumar acquitted in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

A Delhi court Tuesday acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

District Judge J.R. Aryan convicted the other five accused in the case related to the killing of five people in Delhi Cantonment area following the assassination of Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984.

The Congress leader was facing trial along with Balwan Khokkar, Mahender Yadav, Girdhari Lal, Kishan Khokkar and Captain Bhagmal for allegedly conspiring and inciting a mob against the Sikh community.

Chidambaram for debate on Finance Bill in Rajya Sabha

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Tuesday expressed hope that the Finance Bill for the 2013-14 fiscal will be discussed and debated in the Rajya Sabha.

“I hope the Finance Bill is debated in the Rajya Sabha and not passed in a similar manner (as in the Lok Sabha),” Chidambaram said, talking to reporters outside parliament after the Finance Bill was passed in the lower house without discussion.

The Finance Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha without a debate Tuesday after an agreement on this between the government and the opposition.

Sarabjit’s family likely to return as his condition worsens

The distraught family of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian prisoner on death row in Pakistan who was brutally assaulted last week, is likely to return home after doctors have reportedly indicated that he was “clinically dead”.

Sarabjit’s lawyer Awais Shiekh told a news channel that Sarabjit’s sister, Dalbir Kaur, had expressed the family’s desire to return to India.

“After the doctors told her about Sarabjit’s condition, she had first told me that they wanted to go back today. But later, in their hotel, they said that they will go back tomorrow,” Shiekh told a news channel from Lahore.

Musharraf sent to judicial custody for 14 days in Bhutto case

Pakistan’s former military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf will spend the election day under house arrest with an anti-terrorism court today sending him to judicial custody for a fortnight in the Benazir Bhutto assassination case in 2007.

Musharraf was not presented before the judge for today’s hearing for security reasons, said chief prosecutor Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali of the Federal Investigation Agency.

5-year-old MP rape victim dies in hospital

The girl was allegedly raped by 35-year-old Firoz Khan in Ghansaur town. The five-year-old girl, who was brutally raped in Ghansaur town in Seoni district of Madhya Pradesh on April 17, died at a hospital here tonight, a hospital spokesman said.

“The five-year-old girl died of cardiac arrest at around 7:45 PM,” the spokesman of Care Hospital in the city, where the girl was admitted, said.

Her body was sent to the Government Medical College in the city for postmortem, he said.

SC criticises government for vetting CBI report

In scathing criticism of the government’s interference in the CBI probe into the allocation of coal blocks, the Supreme Court Tuesday asked the CBI director to file an affidavit stating the changes made in the draft report vetted by Law Minister Ashwani Kumar.

While underlining the need to liberate the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) from extraneous influences, an apex court bench headed by Justice R.M. Lodha said the affidavit to be filed by the agency’s director should be “absolutely complete and truthful”.

Andhra high court dismisses plea to supervise Jagan case

The Andhra Pradesh High Court Tuesday dismissed a petition urging it to supervise YSR Congress party president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy’s disproportionate assets case.

While dismissing the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an advocate, the court observed that there was no reason for the court to intervene in the investigations.

T. Ranga Rao, the petitioner, pleaded that the entire investigation into the Jagan’s case should be done under the supervision of the high court.

Coal Gate: Supreme Court tells govt. to restore CBI”s independent position

The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the government to restore the independent position of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with regard to its probe of coal block allocations.

It said that the government has shaken the entire process of investigation by asking the CBI Director Ranjit Sinha to show the draft report to the Union Minister for Law and Justice Ashwani Kumar for alleged vetting before its submission to the apex court.

“Why was the apex court kept in dark about the sharing of probe report with the government,” a bench of the Supreme Court asked the CBI counsel.
