One time grant for BPL families to avail New LPG Connections: Panabaka

Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Panabaka Lakshmi informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply today that Government of India has formulated a scheme for providing one time grant to BPL families in the rural areas for release of new domestic LPG connection under Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitaran Yojana (RGGLVY). As per the scheme, the security deposit for the domestic LPG cylinder and cost of pressure regulator is paid from Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds of ONGC, OIL, GAIL, BPCL, HPCL and IOC.

Mala Mahanadu Activists Burn Pastor Sundaram in Effigy

Condemning “atrocious” remarks of Pastor P.D. Sundaram against Constitution maker “Bharat Ratna” B R Ambedkar, the Mala Mahanadu activists burned an effigy of the Pastor at Hyderguda on Friday.

Speaking to the media later, Mala Mahanadu new president Gagamandla Chennaiah said they would not tolerate if any one make derogatory remarks against Dr Ambedkar. He also demanded that Pastor P.D. Sundaram tender an unconditional apology and rub his nose before the Ambedkar statue at the Tank Bund.

Fans protest against sale of ‘Shadow’ tickets in black

Accusing the managements of selling the tickets of ‘Shadow’ film in black, the fans of actor Venkatesh went into a frenzy on Friday morning damaging the seats and furniture of the three cinema halls.

Violent protests were reported from Bhuma, Jagath and Vikyath theaters where the film was being screened. The Fans, who waited in queue since morning, lost temper after they were told by the managements that the tickets were sold out. Agitated fans pelted stones, tore cut outs and even barged into a theatre and damaged the seats and furniture.

Man arrested for molesting British woman

A man was arrested for allegedly molesting a British woman teacher in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, police said on Friday.

“Dhiren Barman, a colleague of the 50-year-old woman, was arrested from Balasan colony in Matigara last night. He was absconding since April 4 when the woman lodged a complaint of molestation against him,” Matigara police station ASI R P Sarkar said.

The woman teaches in a school run by a local NGO in Matigara, police said.

Law Minister says he has done no wrong, govt rules out resignation

Under Opposition attack over the CBI affidavit on the coal scam issue, Law Minister Ashwani Kumar today said he had done “no wrong” and got support from the government which ruled out his resignation.

“I have done no wrong. Truth will prevail,” he said after a meeting of UPA chaired by Sonia Gandhi and attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Kumar, whose sacking is being demanded by the Opposition parties, also met the Prime Minister to give his version on the issue. He also met Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath separately.

Lahore court refers Bhagat Singh case to another judge

The Lahore High Court has referred a petition requesting the reopening of Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh”s case to another judge hearing an identical petition. The British Raj hanged Bhagat Singh on March 23, 1931, following his trial for involvement in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh from the LHC referred the petition to Justice Shujat Ali Khan after he was informed that Justice Khan was hearing a petition of same nature seeking review of Ghazi Ilm Din Shaheed, reports the Daily Times.

Missing teenager found dead in Delhi

A 17-year-old girl, who went missing Thursday, has been found dead at a male friend’s rented accommodation, having allegedly committed suicide, police said Friday.

“The Class 12 student went to school yesterday (Thursday) but did not return home. Her parents filed a missing complaint with the police around 6 p.m., and within hours we were informed by the friend of the girl that she hanged herself in his rented accommodation in the Rohini area of north Delhi,” a police official said.

SP, Muslim clerics slam Azam Khan’s frisking in US

The ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) and Muslim groups in Uttar Pradesh Friday slammed reports of humiliation and extended frisking of party leader and minister Mohammad Azam Khan at Logan Airport in Boston, US.

In a statement issued by his personal assistant Muktinath Jha late Thursday, state Urban Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan alleged that homeland security officials humiliated him on the pretext of frisking him and that he was targeted because he is a Muslim.

Sensex closes half a percent down; bank, oil and gas stocks plummet

A benchmark index of the Indian equities markets Friday closed more than half a percent down, snapping four days of gains, after banks, oil and gas and technology stocks tanked.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) closed at 19,286.72 points, down 0.62 percent or 120.13 points from its previous day’s close at 19,406.85 points, mostly due to profit booking and lower than expected yearly results.

The index touched a high of 19,834.95 points and a low of 19,249.75 points in intra-day trade on Friday.

BJP hit world record of corruption in Karnataka, claims Rahul Gandhi

Sharpening his attack on the BJP government in Karnataka, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused it of having created “a world record” in corruption.

Addressing a rally in Haveri in Karnataka on the second leg of his tour for the May five Assembly polls, he said the BJP talked about corruption at the Centre, but “corruption in the state did not come to their attention.”

“On the issue of corruption, Karnataka government has created a world record,” Mr Gandhi said, targeting the BJP mainly on the corruption plank as he did on the first leg of his tour on April 23.
