Put aside doubts on marines’ trial: Salman Khurshid to Italy

The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the NIA to probe the case against two Italian marines, Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, accused of killing two Indian fishermen in February last and asked a special court to conduct the trial on a day-to-day basis after the chargesheet is filed.

Seeking to re-assure Italy, India on Friday said any doubts on Italian marines being put on trial for committing a terror act should be set aside as the NIA is just one agency available to the government for investigating the case of killing of two Indian fishermen in high seas.

Tendulkar hit on right hand while batting at the nets

Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar today was hit on the right hand while batting at the nets during Mumbai Indians training session ahead of their IPL match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Tendulkar tried to cut a delivery from Jacob Oram, when the extra bounce caught him unawares hitting him on the right hand.

“I should be fine for tomorrow,” the veteran said. His teammate Dwayne Smith also said the 40 year old should be fit to play in tomorrow’s match.

500 kg Ammonium Nitrate seized in poll-bound Karnataka

Authorities have seized 500 kg Ammonium Nitrate, used recently to carry out blasts in the Karnataka capital, from Kolar district of the state, officials said.

The huge seizure of the chemical, widely used to make explosives, was made yesterday by a Election Commission appointed flying squad deployed to check illegal activities in the run up to the May 5 polls in the state, they said.

The team seized 25 bags, each containing 20 kg Ammonium Nitrate, and arrested one person named Mehboob from Kolar district.

The police is probing the case now.

Sarabjit Singh admitted to Pak hospital after being attacked

Indian national Sarabjit Singh, currently on death row in a jail here in Pakistan, today suffered head injury and was admitted to a hospital after he was attacked by a fellow prisoner.

Sarabjit was admitted to the state-run Jinnah Hospital after being attacked within Kot Lakhpat Jail, TV news channels quoted officials as saying.

The attack reportedly occurred while Singh was being moved from one cell to another.

He sustained a head injury and was initially taken to the hospital within the prison.

Set aside ego and bring Yeddyurappa back, says Uma Bharti

BJP Vice-President Uma Bharti today favoured bringing former Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa back into the party fold by “setting aside ego”.

The firebrand leader said those “at the helm of affairs” should take the initiative as “we should toe the line that ‘the country first, individuals second’. Ego has to be set aside”.

Asked if she would take the initiative to bring Yeddyurappa back into the party fold, the former Madhya Pradesh chief minister said she was not a senior leader and does not consider herself eligible for the task.

CBI says ‘shared’ coal blocks probe, sets off political storm

Setting off a political storm and putting the government on the backfoot, the CBI Friday told the Supreme Court that its status report on investigations into coal blocks allocation was “shared” with Law Minister Ashwani Kumar and senior officials in the Prime Minister’s Office and the coal ministry.

The disclosure of CBI director Ranjit Sinha immediately set off an opposition clamour for the law minister’s resignation for allegedly interfering in the functioning of the premier investigating agency. An aggressive Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said Sinha’s statement “exposes” the government.

Man killed for failing to pay hotel bill of Rs 180

A 30-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by an eatery owner and his aides after he failed to pay a bill of Rs 180 to them in south Delhi, police said on Friday.

The incident took place in INA market last night and deceased has been identified as Deepak.

Deepak along with his two relatives had gone to the hotel for dinner and after having the food he got a bill of Rs 180.

However, Deepak told the owner that he will pay the money later, police said.

The owner and some others then started beating up Deepak, his family alleged.

Take care of Sarabjit, India urges Pakistan

Following reports of an attack on death row convict Sarabjit Singh in a Lahore jail, the Indian High Commission in Islamabad has urged the Pakistani government to provide the necessary medical and other help to him, official sources said Friday.

The sources said the Indian High Commission has contacted the Pakistani foreign ministry for ascertaining facts and was awaiting a response.

Two officials were being sent to Lahore for consular access, sources in the external affairs ministry said.

The counsel of accused Vinay Sharma, while cross-examining the prosecution witnesses – two doctors who were part of the medical team of Safdarjung Hospital where the 23-year-old woman was initially treated, told the fast track court that the victim had died here due to the negligence of the doctors who were attending to her.

It may be recalled that Shanker Rao was facing serious allegations in connection with the Green Fields Land issue. Shanker Rao had suffered from serious health problems when the Malkajgiri police had forcibly detained him in this case few months ago. Bhopal hospital collapse: 35 feared trapped under rubble

Atleast 35 persons were tapped under debris after a two-storey section of Kasturba Gandhi Hospital collapsed on Friday evening.

The collapsed building was part of the female ward of the BHEL run hospital. While some reports claimed that it was an old construction, other said the building was under construction.

As rescue operations were carried out on a war footing many of the trapped have been rescued. Many are said to be grievously injured.

12 people have been rescued so far. Most of those trapped under the debris are patients admitted in the hospital.

He sustained a head injury and was initially taken to the hospital within the prison. After his condition worsened, Sarabjit was taken in an ambulance to Jinnah Hospital.

Taliban plans to kidnap Musharraf: Pakistani spy agencies

Pakistani intelligence agencies have warned that the Taliban have made plans to kidnap former military ruler Pervez Musharraf, who is currently being held at his private residence here after being arrested in several criminal cases.

The intelligence agencies have issued an advisory that the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan might attempt to abduct Musharraf while he is being taken from his farmhouse to court, Geo News channel reported today.

The channel quoted its sources as saying that the Taliban was working with other jihadi groups to kidnap Musharraf.

Assocham Survey on Foreign Tourists incorrect, says Chiranjeevi

Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi has said that the conclusion of the quick random survey undertaken by ASSOCHAM Social Development Foundation is incorrect.

The survey has concluded that there has been a decrease of 25 per cent in foreign tourist inflow and a decrease of 35 per cent in women foreign tourist inflow in India since December 2012.
