Sarabjit still critical, kin seek Pakistan visa

The condition of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, admitted to a Lahore hospital after being brutally assaulted by fellow inmates, continued to be critical Saturday, even as his family demanded Pakistani visas to visit him.

Sarabjit Singh is in a coma, He is being treatment for head injuries in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital. He was brutally beaten with bricks and plates by fellow prisoners in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat prison Friday.

A separate room has been temporarily converted into an ICU for Sarabjit Singh’s treatment.

Indian origin man gunned down in Kuala Lumpur

A 29-year-old Indian origin man was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants while he was driving his car in Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur.

R. Kaarikalan, a barber, was driving to his shop in the Puchong area of the city Friday when he was attacked, The New Straits Times reported.

According to the report, when Kaarikalan was at the Taman Billion roundabout, the two gunmen drew alongside him and fired at least eight to 10 times at him. While Kaaraikalan slumped down in his seat after being hit twice, his mother, who was with him, sustained minor injuries.

Sonam wants B’wood’s `golden period’ back

Actress Sonam Kapoor, who is known for her distinct sense of style and fashion, says the 1960s was a golden period for Indian cinema, and she would love it if it comes back.

Three killed, 25 injured in Bhopal hospital building collapse

(Pervez Bari): Three persons were reportedly killed while 25 others sustained injuries as over a dozen patients were trapped under the debris of roof of a portion of a hospital in Bhopal, the capital of central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, which collapsed here on Friday evening. Most of those injured were female patients undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Beef cattle worth Rs. 6 lakh seized

India does not want to accentuate situation: PM on Chinese incursion

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday said India does not want to “accentuate” the situation in the wake of the recent Chinese incursion in Ladakh and is working on a plan to resolve it.

“We do have a plan. We do not want to accentuate the situation. We do believe that it is possible to resolve this problem. It is a localised problem. I think the talks are going on,” he said when asked if the government had any plans to resolve the issue.

Part of 9/11 plane landing gear found in NYC

A piece of landing gear believed to be from one of the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, has been discovered wedged between two lower Manhattan buildings, police said Friday.

The twisted metal part includes a clearly visible Boeing identification number, New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne told reporters.

Browne said the discovery was made Wednesday by a construction crew inspecting the rear of the Park Place building.

Police have secured the area between the two buildings and are treating it as a potential crime scene, he said.

Former Pak player prefers local batting coach to overcome ”batting woes”

A former Pakistan Test cricketer has said that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) needed to hire a local batting coach instead of an international expert to overcome the batting woes of the country. The PCB has decided to hire former New Zealand assistant coach Trent Woodhill, who is currently associated with the Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Delhi Daredevils to fill in the vacant position for upcoming matches against Ireland and Scotland besides the ICC Champions Trophy, the Express Tribune reports.

Law minister will not resign: PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday ruled out the resignation of Law Minister Ashwani Kumar.

The prime minister’s assertion comes a day after the opposition demanded the law minister’s removal for vetting a draft of the CBI probe report on the coal scam, meant only for the Supreme Court.

“There is no question of the law minister resigning… the matter is sub judice,” the prime minister told reporters Saturday on the sidelines of a defence investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan here.

Lawyers for Dr Shakil Afridi, convicted for having links with a banned outfit, has alleged that their client was not given a fair trial guaranteed under the Constitution.

The lawyers said that an accused could only be tried for the anti-state activities if the federal or provincial government had filed a written complaint against him/her, but in the case against Afridi, no such complaint is there on record.

Girls outdo boys in intermediate II yr

Results of intermediate 2nd year (general and vocational) conducted last month have been announced.

The girl students topped the examinations with 69.04 percent pass, when compared to the 62 per cent pass by boys. A total of 924830 appeared for the exam of which 5,51,169, passed the exam. out of 10,10,915 who appeared for the examination. 2,54,258 girls and 2,50,042 boys passed the examination.

Govt announces multi-agency probe into money-pooling frauds

Ponzi schemes are used for activities involving collection of money from a large number of public investors with a promise of huge returns, which are typically paid from the deposits taken from new investors.

In a multi-agency crackdown against alleged duping of public investors through Ponzi schemes, the government today said the entities suspected to be engaged in such activities are being probed by Sebi, RBI and the Corporate Affairs Ministry, among others.
