Jayalalithaa questions direct cash transfer scheme

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Saturday told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the direct benefits transfer scheme infringes on the authority of state governments and makes them just bystanders.

In a letter to Manmohan Singh, Jayalalithaa – referring to the utilisation of the state government for implementing the direct benefits transfer scheme said: “This is clearly an infringement of the authority of the state governments and totally violative of the federal polity of the country and the spirit of democratic decentralisation.”

Injuries on Dec 16 gang-rape victim could be caused by rods, court told

A doctor Saturday told the court trying the Dec 16, 2012 gang rape case that the injuries suffered by the victim could be caused by the weapons (rods) used in the crime.

“Looking at the nature of the injuries suffered by the victim in her private parts, in my opinion, can be caused by the weapons produced before the court,” said the doctor, who was part of the medical team of Safdarjung Hospital where the 23-year-old woman was initially treated.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist secretary for Goa, Thalmann Pereira, also said that mining leases given to handpicked, crony Goan families by the “hated” colonial regime headed by Portuguese dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar decades ago should be wrested back, and a government corporation should be formed to run the mining on these leases.

Police recover 1 Kg Gold from chain snatching gang

The Humayun Nagar Police have arrested a gang of chain snatchers which was involved in 32 cases of chain snatching in the limits of Hyderabad City Police.

The alleged notorious snatching gang used to move on two wheeler motor cycles and snatch the gold ornaments from the women. The offenders used to commit the offences in the isolated places like colonies, parks, temples, super markets etc., and they will select lonely moving ladies. Police have recovered gold ornaments weighing about 1 kilogram worth nearly Rs 26 Lakh at the instance of accused.

2 women die of burns

In two different incidents two women died of burns. The incidents occured in Habeebnagar and Langarhouz police station limits. According to Habeebnagar police, 25 year old Asma Begum was the wife of Nafees Ahmed. The couple got married 11 months ago. Asma Begum suffered burn injuries, she was immediately shifted to the hospital where she succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment.

Court rejects Jagan’s plea to treat latest charge-sheet final

The special CBI court here today dismissed the applications filed by jailed YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and his auditor Vijay Sai Reddy, seeking that the court treat the latest charge-sheet filed by CBI as the final one. B Ravindranath, Deputy Legal Adviser to CBI, said the court rejected the plea.

The applications filed by the Kadapa MP and his aide said that while opposing Jagan’s bail plea before the Supreme Court last year, CBI had said it was going to file final charge-sheet by March on seven issues including investments in Jagan’s firms by Dalmia Cements.

Prime Minister terms attack on Sarabjit as very sad

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today termed as a “very sad” incident the attack on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a jail in Pakistan.

“It is very sad. I think in the jail, I think some inmates attacked him. I think that is very sad,” he said when asked about the attack on Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail.

After the attack on him in the Kot Lakhpat Jail, Sarabjit was rushed to a hospital where he was in a “deep coma” and had been put on a ventilator.

Doctors were unable to perform surgery on him because of extensive internal bleeding caused by a severe head injury.

Four members of Sarabjit’s family to travel to Pakistan

Four family members of Sarabjit Singh were Saturday granted visas to travel to Pakistan to see the critically injured Indian death row prisoner who was brutally attacked in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat jail.

“Four members of Sarabjit’s family have been given visas to visit Pakistan,” an official said.

The ministry of external affairs facilitated the visas for the family members.

Sarabjit Singh, who has been sentenced to death row for spying, was admitted to Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital after being brutally assaulted by fellow inmates on Friday. He is in a coma,

Musharraf remanded in Federal Investigation Agency custody

Pakistan’s embattled ex-military ruler Pervez Musharraf was today remanded to the custody of the Federal Investigation Agency till April 30 by an anti-terrorism court in connection with the 2007 assassination case of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Though anti-terrorism court Judge Chaudhry Habib-ur-Rehman accepted the FIA’s request to be given physical custody of Musharraf, the 69-year-old former military ruler will continue to be held at his farmhouse for security reasons.

No question of cooperation in Parliament, BJP tells UPA

Slamming the UPA government for adopting the path of confrontation with the Opposition, the BJP today made it clear that it was in no mood to let passage of bills in Parliament.

Pakistan to seal Afghan border May 11 for election

Pakistani officials say they will seal their border with Afghanistan and restrict the movement of Afghan refugees on May 11 during parliamentary elections. Officials at the Interior Ministry and the election commission said today the measure is aimed at preventing terrorist attacks during the vote.

Officials did not say how they would restrict the movement of hundreds of thousands of people spread out across the country or close the porous border.

School owner arrested for raping minor girls

The owner of a private school has been arrested for allegedly raping two minor girls and giving them poison leading to their deaths, police said on Saturday. Rajesh Dhangad was arrested on Friday night for allegedly raping the girls, both students of Class 8 at his school, on April 11 and then poisoning the duo when they threatened to disclose the matter to their parents, they said.

The girls succumbed later that day at separate hospitals, where they were admitted upon falling unconscious after returning to their respective homes, police said.

UP cop booked for raping woman

An Uttar Pradesh policeman was booked on Saturday for raping a 25-year-old-woman for many months. The constable had promised the woman a job and had even secretly married her, police said.

Ram Narayan Yadav was booked for rape at Deoria, 471 km from here, after the woman told senior police officials that the constable had been physically abusing her for many months with the lure of a job, Superintendent of Police (SP), Umesh Srivastava told a news agency.

The woman used to practice for running at the police line grounds in Deoria and was befriended by the accused there.

Two policemen killed in Naxal attack in Chhattisgarh

Two police personnel were killed in a Naxal attack in Maoist-hit Kanker district of Chhattisgarh on Saturday.

The incident took place when a joint contingent of BSF and district force were on a combing operation in the jungles of Tadoti Police Station area of the district, Kanker SP, RN Das told a news agency.

When the patrolling party reached Shakti Ghat, Naxals opened indiscriminate fire, killing the jawans of the district force.

Those killed were identified as Sub Inspector Santosh Ekka and Head Constable Aliram Usendi.
