Withdrawal of power tariff hike under consideration

There are chances that Govt. might withdraw power tariff hike or keep its implementation in abeyance. In the wake of the criticism from various parties including Congress, CM promised that he would revise the rates.

Chidambaram to visit Japan today to woo investment

After selling India story to investors in Hong Kong, Singapore and Europe, Finance Minister P Chidambaram is leaving for Japan on Monday to attract foreign investment.

Chidambaram would meet his Japanese counterpart and institutional investors during his three-day official visit to Japan, sources said.

The Finance Minister will be accompanied by Department of Economic Affairs Secretary Arvind Mayaram and Chief Economic Advisor Raghuram Rajan, they said.

Punjab ASI shot dead on Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway

An assistant sub-inspector of the Punjab Police has been shot dead by unknown people on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway.

According to reports, Gurdev Singh was shot at when he chased a white Verna car for not stopping when he asked it to at around midnight on Sunday.

Police have not identified the four-five people in the car as yet.

The incident came two day after Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Ravinder Pal Singh Mangat on traffic duty during a VIP visit was allegedly assaulted by a truck driver and died later.

Man arrested for killing mother over shoes in Odisha

A young man in Rourkela, Sundergarh district, Odisha, killed his mother, allegedly because she refused him money to buy a pair of shoes, police said on Monday.

The incident took place in a slum in the steel city of Rourkela, about 514 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, on Saturday night. The matter only came to light when the husband of the deceased lodged a complaint at the Udit Nagar police station the next day.

Three children die after drunk mother allegedly throws them into a well

Three children died after their mother allegedly threw them into a village well before she jumped into it herself in the Mahabubnagar district of Andhra Pradesh this evening, the police said.

The woman, who is in critical condition acted allegedly in an inebriated condition, the police said.

The incident occurred in Rekulachoudapur of Nawabpet mandal at around 4 pm, when the woman took her three children including two boys and a girl near a well and threw them in, an investigating officer told PTI.

The deceased were identified as K Agni (6), K Shilpa (7) and K Charan (2), he said.

Manoj Kumar to file lawsuit against SRK, Eros over Om Shanti Om row

Veteran actor Manoj Kumar will file a law suit on Monday against Shah Rukh Khan and Eros International, producers of 2007 hit ‘Om Shanti Om’, and seek damages to the tune of Rs. 100 crore for releasing the film in Japan without removing certain scenes apparently lampooning him. “The film was released in Japan without deleting those scenes. I had forgiven them twice but not this time. They have disrespected me. They also face contempt of court as in 2008 the court had asked them to forever and from all prints and broadcast material, delete those scenes,” Kumar said.

RTE deadline ends, many schools yet to implement norms

The deadline for meeting the infrastructure provisions under the Right To Education came to an end on Sunday, with widespread apprehension about the closure of schools which have failed in implementing them.

Uttar Pradesh’s western region is turning into a hub for illegal cow slaughtering hub – purchased from distraught farmers in Rajasthan – with the active connivance of low-ranking police officials, a police official said Sunday.

The crime figures of Panchsheel Nagar district suggest that cows and calves are being transported to the district from Rajsthan and sent to the Moradabad and Sambhal areas, said district police chief Ahok Kumar Raghav.

17 bodies recovered in Tibet landslide

The number of bodies recovered at the site of a mining area landslide in China’s Tibet region reached 17 late Sunday evening, Xinhua reported.

At least 15 more bodies were retrieved Sunday, rescuers said, adding 66 miners, however, remained missing.

The landslide occurred Friday in Maizhokunggar county, about 68 km from regional capital Lhasa.

The affected area of the landslide, caused by natural disasters, is spread over three kilometres, with about two million cubic metres of mud, rock and debris, a local government official said earlier.

Five killed in South African chopper crash

Five people were killed when a South African Air Force (SAAF) helicopter crashed Saturday night, Xinhua reported Sunday.

The accident occurred when the A109 helicopter was on a routine patrol over the Kruger National Park in the northeastern Limpopo province, the SAAF reported. “It was part of the anti-poaching operation.”

The Kruger park, the largest reserve in South Africa, is home to many endangered rhinos. However, some of the rhinos would be targeted and killed by poachers every month for smuggling of horns.

IMF team to visit Egypt

A technical team of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is set to visit Egypt Wednesday to discuss a $4.8 billion loan aimed at boosting Egypt’s ailing economy, Xinhua reported.

“Egypt seeks to reach a final agreement with delegation on this fund because it will positively impact the Egyptian economy,” said Egyptian cabinet’s spokesperson Alaa al-Hadidi.

The Egyptian economic reform programme was on track according to the cabinet plan, regardless of the talks with the IMF, the spokesperson added.

Mandela’s treatment continues at hospital

Former South African president Nelson Mandela continued to receive treatment in hospital four days after re-admission due to the recurrence of his lung infection, the presidency said.

Mandela, 94, was re-admitted to hospital March 28.

“The Presidency has been advised by the doctors that former president Nelson Mandela had a restful day and continues to receive treatment,” Xinhua quoted presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj as saying.

UAE, Somalia sign agreement

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Somalia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further bilateral relations in political, security, diplomatic, economic, investment and developmental sectors.

It was signed Sunday by UAE’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Somalian Foreign Minister Fowsiyo Yussuf Haji Adan.

Both the leaders also discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and cooperation.

UAE joins international aviation security committee

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been elected as one of the facilitation panel members by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Canada.

With the inclusion of UAE, represented by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the ICAO facilitation panel members now comprise 30 states. This panel meets once in two years.

The facilitation aspect in civil aviation environment holds importance as it seeks to achieve maximum efficiency in border clearance operations, and at the same time, maintain high-quality security and effective law enforcement, a release said.

Mamie Gummer, Benjamin Walker split

Veteran actress Meryl Streep’s daughter Mamie Gummer has split from her husband Benjamin Walker after less than two years of marriage.

Gummer married the actor in July 2011, but now the couple has decided to part ways. Representatives for both of them have confirmed the split news, reports contactmusic.com.

Gummer’s spokesperson said: “It’s very amicable.”

The couple met while performing in the 2008 Broadway production “Les Liaisons Dangereuses” and announced their engagement in October 2009.

Centre Ignored Minorities : Sachar

Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajendra Sachar today expressed regret that the Centre has not implemented his recommendations regarding minorities till date.

Addressing a meeting organised by Socialist Party of India, the Chairman of Sachar Committee said although the
Centre “blew trumpet” over his recommendations to improve socio-economic status of minorities, it has done nothing to implement them till date.

He alleged even the Uttar Pradesh government was making false assurances.

In maximum number of cases, rapists are relatives

Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Uma Shanker Gupta today said that in maximum number of rape cases, the culprits are either relatives or those known to victims. “As per an official survey, between 84 and 90 per cent of rapes are committed by relatives or those close to the victims,” Gupta told reporters here without elaborating any further. The minister said the change in the mentality of the society was needed to curb the rising instances of crime against women. “These figures are shocking as they showed the disturbed mentality in the society.
