UAE, Ireland hold talks

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ireland have held discussions over joint cooperation in developmental and humanitarian issues between them.

The talks were held between Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, UAE’s minister for international cooperation and development and visiting Irish Minister of State for Trade and Development, Joe Costello T.D.

The two sides also discussed the current state of affairs of international humanitarian and developmental work and the global efforts

The study said that a systematic comparison of metastatic breast-cancer cells to healthy breast cells revealed dramatic differences between two cell lines in their mechanics, migration, oxygen response, protein production and their ability to stick to surfaces.

Cancer cells, which can break out of a tumour and invade other organs, are much more aggressive and nimble than nonmalignant cells, a new study has found.

According to the study, these cells exert greater force on their environment and can more easily manoeuvre small spaces.

Telangana activists begin march to Delhi over demand for separate state

Thousands of activists representing different political outfits and also students’ have left the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad for New Delhi, as part of a march aimed at demanding the creation of a separate state of Telangana. Part of the march is being undertaken by a special train. The protest is being carried out under the banner of a Joint Action Committee (JAC). The march to New Delhi has been named as ‘Sansad Yatra’, and nearly 2000 people are participating in it, said the convenor of the JAC, Devi Prasad.

Chamel Singh’s family blames Centre for attack on Sarabjit Singh

Chamel had died in mysterious conditions in a Pakistani jail on January 15. However, the autopsy was conducted on March 13 in Lahore.

Family of Chamel Singh, an Indian prisoner who died in a Pakistani jail three months ago, on Saturday blamed the Centre for the attack on Sarabjit Singh, saying had the government taken a tough stand at that time such an incident would not have recurred.

India ready to extend medical aid to Sarabjit in Pakistan: Khurshid

India is willing to extend any possible medical support to Sarabjit Singh, the injured Indian prisoner, who is currently hospitalised in Lahore’s government-run Jinnah Hospital, visiting External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said here. Speaking in an exclusive interview with ANI, Khurshid said: “The process of investigating the attack on Sarabjit Singh is going on. They (Pakistan) are giving him the best treatment I believe that they can. I am not sure whether something more can be done as far as his medical treatment is being concerned.

Over 50,000 central forces for Karnataka polls

More than 50,000 central paramilitary forces personnel will be deployed during the forthcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka to ensure free and fair polls.

The Centre has earmarked a total of 52,500 security personnel (525 companies) drawn from various paramilitary forces like CRPF, ITBP and BSF to keep strict vigil and ensure peace during the polling process in the southern state.

Voting will take place on May 5 for the 224-member Karnataka Assembly.

Woman poisoned to death over dowry demands

A woman was allegedly poisoned to death by her husband and in-laws in the Mahaveer Nagar area here over demands for dowry, police said yesterday.

Sunita Ajmer died yesterday at the Sawai Man Singh hospital following which her father registered an FIR at the Bajaj Nagar police station, they said.

Her father has alleged that she was given poison by her husband Rakesh, mother-in-law Lalita, father-in-law Kailash, brother-in-law Rajiv and others, they said.

The accused allegedly used to demand dowry from the woman and subject her to harassment over the same, they said.

Indian-American students shine at California Science Fair

Indian-American students have grabbed top spots at this year’s prestigious California State Science Fair, including winning the award for ‘Project of the Year.’

Eesha Khare, a 12th grade student of Lynbrook High School in San Jose, California, won the top award for ‘Project of the Year’ in the senior grade at the fair held earlier this year, India-West reported today.

Khare also won a USD 5,000 for her project, ‘Design and Synthesis of Hydrogenated TiO2-Polyaniline Nanorods for
Flexible High-Performance Supercapacitors’.

Minor girl sexually assaulted by father

A thirteen-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by her father in an inebriated state in Rohinaya area here, police said on Sunday.

The victim was allegedly sexually assaulted few days back by her father while her mother and brother were away, they said.

Victim’s father was produced before a local court today which sent him to jail, they said.

The matter is being probed, they added.

Tamil Nadu girl pulled out of bore well after 16 hours

A seven-year old girl, who fell into a 900-foot deep bore well on a farm in Tamil Nadu’s Suryapalli Village, was pulled out late on Saturday night, ending her 16-hour-long ordeal. The girl identified as Muthulakshmi fell into the improperly closed bore well at around 7 a.m. on Saturday morning, and was pulled out around 11 p.m. in an unconscious state on the same day. Daughter of farm labourers, the girl was rushed to a nearby hospital in an ambulance, but there is no word about her condition. Police said the rescue operations were hampered by the rocky terrain. Security of Pakistani inmates in Tihar beefed up

The vigil has been stepped up in Tihar Jail to pre-empt any attack on Pakistani inmates in the wake of the brutal assault on Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani jail.

“Jail superintendents have been asked to keep a strict vigil on other inmates so that no one can hurt Pakistani inmates,” a senior jail official told IANS.

According to the official, jail staff have been asked to segregate the Pakistani inmates from Indian inmates.

Foreign inmates are put in separate groups in cells.

Around 16 Pakistanis are lodged in Tihar’s nine sub-jails, the official added.

SP blames ‘weak’ foreign policy for Azam’s detention

Class 11 student falls to death in Delhi school

A Class 11 class student fell to his death under mysterious circumstances at a government school building here, police said Saturday. The student’s family alleged that he was murdered by his classmates.

“The body of Dinesh Kumar, 17, was found Friday evening on the ground in the school premises in Nangloi in west Delhi. A school staff spotted his body and informed the administration,” said a police officer.

“The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital. The report is awaited,” the officer said.

Saudi Arabia to replace expatriate workers with locals

Saudi Arabia has plans to improve competence of local workers to replace the eight million expatriate workers in the country, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The government plans to offer training and higher salaries to attract locals to get jobs, especially the blue-collar ones, reported local daily Okaz citing a labor ministry source.

“Those jobs could be taken by locals with higher salaries if they ignored social misconceptions about blue-collar workers,” he said.

The main challenge to replace foreigner workers with Saudis lies in the construction sector, he said.

Police suspect drug addict in sexual assault of six-year-old

Delhi Police suspect a drug addict for the sexual assault of a six-year-old girl here, and that he may be a resident of the same area where the girl lives.

“The accused is probably a drug addict residing in the same Badarpur slum where the incident was reported from Friday evening,” a Delhi Police officer said Saturday.

“We are on the lookout for a single assailant who might have involved behind the brutalisation,” he added.

Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary said that around 400 houses in the slum have been searched to nab the accused.

Bangladesh tragedy toll hits 352, rescuers find 29 more alive

More than 84 hours after the horrendous tragedy, Bangladeshi rescuers Saturday pulled 29 more people alive from beneath the rubble of the collapsed building that has left 352 people dead so far.

The rescuers, who more than three days after the catastrophe managed to reach the ground floor of the eight-storied building which crumbled like a pack of cards Wednesday morning, believed that many more are still alive in the wreckage on the third floor, reported Xinhua.

In a letter written to the Chief Minister of Andhra Padesh today the Editor Siasat, Mr. Zahid Ali Khan demanded the CM to grant 500 Cr package for Gulf returnees to settle them into small scale businesses and getting them employment in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. Khan said, more than 8 lakh people from Andhra Pradesh are working in GCC Saudi Arabia. A large number of them are semi-skilled labours who are holding Aqama (Labour card) in one company and working in another company.

Salman Khurshid arrives in Russia

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid arrived here on Saturday to review the progress in bilateral relations since the India-Russia summit-level meeting in December last year.

Khurshid will co-chair the inter-session meeting of the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC) on Monday with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

Two women raped in moving car in Gurgaon

Two women have alleged that three men raped them in a car after giving them a lift, police said Saturday.

The women, who are 22 and 45 years old, said in their complaint to police that they had taken a lift from Rajiv Chowk in Gurgaon to go to Sohna.

However, instead of heading towards Sohna, the three men, all in their 40s, turned towards Taudu and raped them on the way.

The victims were abandoned in a desolate area after being raped. The accused are yet to be identified.

The women lodged a complaint at Sohna police station Saturday afternoon.

Girl dies after consuming govt-distributed food

A five-year-old girl died and her three-year-old brother was hospitalised after they allegedly consumed the contents of a food packet distributed by the state government to fight malnutrition among children, police said here on Saturday.

Anganwadi workers in Maliya-Miyana town of the district had gone for door-to-door distribution the food packets in the town yesterday, police said.

The food packets were given as part of the state government’s ‘Bal Vikas Seva Yojana’ scheme, they said.
