Babri Masjid case: SC questions CBI over delay in challenging HC order on Advani, others

The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the CBI for the delay in filing appeal against the Allahabad high court order that conspiracy charge will not apply to BJP leader LK Advani and others in the Babri Masjid demolition case.

A bench headed by Justice HL Dattu directed that an affidavit be filed within two weeks by a senior law officer of the central government after noting that the delay of 167 days was caused because of a law officer.

Bilawal returns to Pak

After a week in Dubai following tiff with his father over party matters, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari returned to his homeland on Monday night.

Bilawal had left for Dubai last week after he developed differences with Zardari and his sister, Faryal Talpur, over the party’s handling of key issues, including militant violence, sectarian attacks against Shias and the award of party tickets for the polls scheduled for May 11.

Married woman molested in Punjab

A married woman was allegedly molested by a man, who had entered her house when she was taking a bath in Bhinder village here, police said on Tuesday.

In her complaint, the victim (32) has alleged that the accused, Gurbachan Singh, entered her house after scaling the wall and allegedly molested her when she was taking a bath yesterday, police said.

“After she raised an alarm, her husband and other family members caught Singh and thrashed him,” they said.

A case of molestation and trespassing has been registered against Gurbachan Singh, the police said.

Train derails in strike-hit Bangladesh, 20 injured

Over 20 passengers were injured Tuesday when seven coaches of an inter-city train derailed as suspected Islamists uprooted railway tracks in Bangladesh during a nationwide general strike aimed at thwarting ongoing trial of top Jamat-e-Islami leaders for 1971 war crimes.

Officials said seven coaches of the train were derailed near the eastern Comilla city, hours after it left Dhaka for southeastern port city of Chittagong. Main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led opposition alliance with fundamentalist Jamaat-e-Islami being the major partner called the hartal simultaneously.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the Centre and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for delay in filing appeal against BJP veteran LK Advani and others accused in Babri Masjid demolition case.

According to reports, the apex court also sought an affidavit from senior law officer of Centre explaining the delay in filing appeal against the high-profile accused.

The apex court also asked the CBI to explain the delay in challenging Allahabad High Court’s ruling that conspiracy charges will not apply to Advani and others.

In a jolt to pro-Khalistan groups in the US, the Obama Administration today refused to declare the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in India as genocide, but noted that grave human rights violations had occurred.

The White House response in this regard came months after a section of the Sikh community in the US launched an online petition campaign urging the Obama Administration to recognise the 1984 riots as genocide.

Jalpally murder, five arrested
(Siasat News): Pahadi Shareef police has arrested five persons in connection with the sensational Jalpally murder and handed them over to judicial custody.

Inspector Pahadi Shareef Mr. Giri Kumar said that police had recovered a dead body from Jalpally and after the investigation; the dead body was identified as one Mohd. Sultan’s.

In its preliminary investigations, police suspected Faisal Baam as alleged by the relatives of the deceased.

60% girls in India suffer from Anemia – Dr. Farida’s lecture in Urdu University

Islamic school fire kills 13 children in Myanmar

A blaze engulfed a mosque in Myanmar’s Yangon on Tuesday, claiming 13 Muslim students.

At a time when Myanmar is stricken with Buddhist-Muslims violence, there were fears that the blaze could trigger more tension so riots police were deployed around the blaze-hit mosque.

However, the police officials said that the blaze was caused by an electrical short circuit.

Police officer Thet Lwin said the fire was triggered by an overheated inverter “and not due to any criminal activity.”

Rs. 779 crore property tax collected by GHMC

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation collected Rs. 779 crore towards Property Tax for the year 2012-13. It is Rs. 179 crore more than last year’s tax collection.

The White House has urged the Senate to swiftly confirm Chandigarh-born Indian-American legal luminary Srikanth ‘Sri’ Srinivasan to what is “often called the nation’s second-highest court”, the US court of appeals for the American capital.

Srinivasan, 45, became the first South Asian to be ever nominated to the circuit court by President Barack Obama last June, but the Senate Judiciary Committee announced his confirmation hearing for next week only Monday.

Tajikistan gets $15 mn world bank grant

The World Bank has approved a $14.85-million grant for Tajikistan to finance its environmental land management and rural livelihoods project, the international lender said Monday.

The grant aims to support more sustainable management of natural resources in the Central Asian republic and increase the resilience of communities to the impact of climate change, the World Bank said in a statement.

Non-subsidised LPG price cut by Rs 3 per cylinder

The price of non-subsidised cooking gas (LPG) was Monday reduced by Rs 3 per cylinder in line with fall in international rates.

A 14.2-kg LPG cylinder that consumers will have to buy after they exhaust their enhanced quota of 9 subsidised bottles in a year, will cost Rs 901.50 from Monday, according to Indian Oil Corp (IOC).

The government had in September last year fixed a quota of six subsidised LPG cylinders per household in a year. This was increased to 9 cylinders in January. Any requirement over and above this entitlement has to be bought at market price.
