Delhi Police official arrested for robbery

A Delhi Police official was arrested for allegedly robbing an Agra-based jeweller in the capital, police said Tuesday.

“Rishipal Singh, 35, an assistant sub-inspector posted at Subzi Mandi police station, was arrested Monday for robbing Gauri Shankar, who had come in Delhi for a business deal,” said a police officer.

Rishipal Singh’s three friends have also been arrested and the stolen jewellery has been recovered. The stolen goods include five kg of silver, two gold biscuits, and Rs.2 lakh in cash.

The incident was reported March 21 evening at Sunlight Colony in south Delhi.

Class 11 student commits suicide in Delhi

A Class 11 student committed suicide by hanging himself at his house here after he fared poorly in his annual exam results, police said Tuesday.

“Rahul, 16, was spotted by a neighbour, hanging from a ceiling fan at his house in Sultanpuri area in north Delhi Monday evening,” said a police officer.

He was depressed over his exam results since Saturday.

No suicide note was found. Police said the body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

Modi government introduces new Lokayukta bill; BJP defends move

The Narendra Modi government Tuesday introduced a bill in the Gujarat assembly which seeks to create a multi-member Lokayukta and dilute the primacy of the governor in the appointment of the anti-corruption ombudsman.

His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the bill, noting that the chief minister will come under its ambit while the Congress accused the party of “double standards” and creating obstacles in the appointment of Lokayukta.

Man fires near RBI building in Mumbai

Mumbai Police Tuesday detained a man for firing from an airgun after he was refused entry into the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) building here, police said.

According to a police official, the man tried to enter the RBI headquarters Tuesday evening and fired from his airgun after he was stopped. He was overpowered and taken to the police station.

Police is questioning the individual.

Nobody was hurt in the firing.

KCR flays State on power charges

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the State Government for the hike in power charges.

The government has imposed Rs 20,000 crore burden on the common man and the government did not heed to anyone’s advice, TRS President K Chandasekhar Rao said here. With farmers burning their crops as there was damage due to lack of power to draw water from borewells, the state government should be ashamed for imposing high tariff, he said.

Stay on set top boxes for one week

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has stayed the digital broadcasting system.

There is relief to TV viewers from the compulsory set top boxes for one week. The digitisation was made compulsory in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam from April 1, but due to shortage of set top boxes the process was not complete.

Many TVs went silent in the twin cities and Visakhapatnam since Monday afternoon.

Two killed in road mishap in Uttar Pradesh

Two persons, including a minor, were killed and four others injured as two motorbikes collided head-on in Lambua area here today, police said.

The mishap took place this morning in Sakrasi village when two speeding motorbikes collided with each other, leading to the death of Arpita (5) and Ashish Maurya (21) on the spot, they said.

The injured were admitted to the district hospital from where two were referred to Lucknow Trauma Centre in serious condition, police added.

The blood and sugar levels of MLAs Srinivas Reddy and Lakshminaryana have fallen down and doctors asked them to withdraw from fast.

It was first Left Parties who were forced to withdraw fast after falling ill, followed by TDP leaders. While BJP leaders are on fast, YSRCP leaders also launched indefinite fast from today. (INN)

Govt to examine Muslim community’s demand of fast-track courts

In an apparent attempt to reach out to the Muslim community, government today decided to examine their demand for setting up of fast-track courts to expedite trial of “innocent” Muslim youth accused of terror acts.

“We will examine the demand,” Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told PTI after a delegation of political leaders, MPs met him demanding justice to “innocent” Muslim youth accused in terror charges languishing in jails.

White House says North Korea blustering, not acting on military threats

The White House has pointed out that despite Pyongyang’s verbal threats to retaliate with force there were no signs of any troop movements that would suggest imminent military action.

Protesters clash with police outside Kerala assembly

The youth wing of the CPM staged violent protests outside the Kerala assembly over the issue of complaint of domestic violence against state forests minister Ganesh Kumar.

The CPM workers took out a protest march demanding chief minister Oommen Chandy’s resignation accusing him of misleading the assembly on the issue.

The protesters turned violent and clashed with the police.

Ganesh Kumar submitted his resignation to Chandy late on Monday night after his estranged wife, Yamini Thankachi, accused him of assaulting her and lodged a complaint with the police.

HC admits PIL on power charge hike

The Andhra Pradesh High Court has admitted a PIL challenging the hike in power charges.

The Court has ordered the ERC to submit a full report on the hike in power charges. The hearing is adjourned to next Monday. The court has informed that it has included the State Government, ERC and six others as respondents in the case. (INN)

Yashwant Sinha should not have commented on 2G: Congress

The Congress Tuesday said BJP leader Yashwant Sinha should not have commented on the 2G scam as he was a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probing it.

“There is a Joint Parliamentary Committee (on the 2G scam) in progress at this point. Since I was a member of this committee, I do not want to comment on its proceedings. Sinha is a member of the same committee. Whatever they (the BJP) want to articulate, it would be much more appropriate if they do so within the confines of that committee,” Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari told Times Now news channel.

New Saudi work policy to impact thousands of Indians

Thousands of Indians, especially Malayalis employed in Saudi Arabia, may be impacted by a new work policy of the kingdom that seeks to reserve a certain percentage of jobs for locals.

According to the new Nitaqat policy – or Saudisation programme – of the kingdom, 10 percent of jobs are to be reserved for locals. The policy is aimed at expanding employment opportunities for Saudi nationals.

There are over two million Indians working in Saudi Arabia, including 576,000 from Kerala alone.

Supreme Court lifts restraint order on Italian envoy

The Supreme Court on Tuesday vacated its order restraining Italy’s ambassador Daniele Mancini from leaving India as the two Italian marines, accused of killing two fishermen, returned here to face the proceedings as per commitment given by him to the court.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir vacated its March 14 order by which it had restrained the ambassador from leaving the country after the Italian government had refused to send back the marines.
