Left activists join SFI leader’s funeral in Kolkata

Hundreds of activists took to the streets here Wednesday accompanying the funeral procession of Students Federation of India (SFI) leader who died in police custody after participating in a protest.

The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has ordered a probe into his death.

Sudipto Gupta, 24, a post-graduate student of the Rabindra Bharati University and West Bengal state committee member of the SFI, died Tuesday evening at a state-run hospital amid allegations that a baton charge by police led to his fatal injury.

Protest in Delhi over Kolkata student’s death

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University Wednesday held a demonstration here to protest the death of a student activist in Kolkata.

The protesters gathered at Banga Bhawan on Hailey Road in central Delhi and shouted slogans against the death of Sudipto Gupta of the Students Federation of India.

Some of the students also tried to scale the perimeter wall of the building.

Gupta, an activist of the Communist Party of India-Marxist’s student wing, Tuesday died of a head injury in Kolkata Police custody after participating in a protest.

Era of police killing students back: Congress

After the death of a student activist allegedly due to a police baton charge, the Congress Wednesday said the era of students getting killed by police was back to haunt West Bengal.

“With the new government taking over, we had thought that the state will witness change. What I see now is the politics of police killing students, that once prevailed in the state, has come back,” state Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya told mediapersons here.

Tamil newspaper office attacked in Sri Lanka

An office of a Tamil newspaper was attacked in the northern Sri Lanka Wednesday, police said.

Police said that the Uthayan newspaper distribution office in Kilinochchi town, an area which was once under rebel control, was attacked by an unidentified group, reported Xinhua.

At least three people were injured during the attack while the building and a vehicle parked outside were also damaged.

Fire breaks out in a residential building in Andheri

A fire broke out on Wednesday in a residential complex at Marol in suburban Andheri, fire officials said. The blaze erupted on the 10th floor of the multi-storeyed Raj Paradise building at around 12:20 pm, they said.

No one was reported hurt in the fire so far. Four fire engines, three water tankers, two aerial ladder platforms and an ambulance have been rushed to the spot for rescue operations, they said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, the officials added.

5 self-immolate in Rajkot municipal office

Five persons, including three women, on Wednesday set themselves ablaze in Rajkot Municipal Corporation office to protest the civic body’s alleged demolition drive, police said.

The five, identified as Rekha, Asha, Vasumati, Bharat and Girish from Chhotu Nagar area near Raiya Dhar of the city, on Wednesday poured kerosene and set themselves on fire in RMC’s central zone office, police said. They were rushed to Rajkot civil hospital where condition of two of them was stated to be critical.

Protests over power tariff hike continue in Andhra

Protests by opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh continued Wednesday to press for a rollback of the recent hike announced in electricity tariff.

Police arrested YSR Congress party leaders and activists when they tried to stop Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy’s convoy in Nellore.

Raising slogans against the government, some protestors squatted on the road to stop the chief minister’s convoy, and clashed with the police, who forced them into waiting vehicles and cleared the way for the convoy.

BJP President Kishen Reddy Breaks Fast In Hospital

State BJP President G. Kishan Reddy was on Wednesday forced to calloff his indefinite fast on medical advise after his health began to deteriorate on the fourth day.

It might be mentioned here that the BJP legislators led by Kishen Reddy began an indefinite hunger strike protesting against power tariff hike. However, the police put a brake to the protest fast by arresting the leaders and admitted them NIMS hospital.

Two killed, seven injured in road mishap

Two persons were killed and seven others injured when their vehicle was hit by a speeding truck on Sagar-Tikamgarh road, about five kms from here, police said Wednesday.

The mishap occurred last evening near Shahgarh when the victims were returning to Mabai village in neighbouring Chhattarpur district after selling food grains in Shahgarh Krishi Mandi, they said.

The deceased were identified as – Surendra Kumar Jain (25) and Veerchand Jain (50).

The seriously injured persons have been admitted to the district hospital for treatment, police said.

Jilted lover kills girl’s father in Nagpur

A jilted lover allegedly shot dead a retired professor in the wee hours Wednesday and left his middle-aged wife seriously injured after attacking her with a knife near Manewada here, police said.

The incident took place in Shrikrishna Nagar in South city area around 1.30 am.

Assailant Ankwar Khan, who was in love with the daughter of the deceased professor, Yogesh Dakhode shot him point blank with a pistol.

Later, he also attacked Dakhode’s wife Kusum with a knife. She was rushed to a nearby private hospital, they said.

Woman employee consumes poison in Raj

The Rajasthan government has ordered a departmental inquiry after a woman employee of Commercial Tax Department allegedly consumed poison following a verbal spat with a senior colleague, officials said here.

Family members of the 30-year-old woman, who is an assistant commercial tax officer with local CTD here, alleged that she consumed some poison substance on Monday following a verbal spat with local deputy commissioner CTD.

The victim is at present admitted in a hospital in coma, doctors said.

Abu Jundal to get rid of Ajmal Kasab’s cell

Abu Jundal, alleged to be a key conspirator behind the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, will finally get rid of the special oval cell in the Arthur Road jail in which Ajmal Kasab was kept before his execution.

According to reports, Jundal had sometimes back complained to a local court in Mumbai that he feels “haunted” and is uncomfortable staying in the same cell that was occupied by Kasab and requested that the court to shift him to another jail. The court has accepted his request and ordered the authorities to shift him to other safe jail.

Washington man indicted for hate crime against Sikh

A federal grand jury in Seattle indicted a Washington man on charges of hate crime against a 50-year-old Sikh man.

Jamie Larson, 49, now faces a maximum of 10 years of imprisonment sentenced.

The Department of Justice in a statement said yesterday that Larson has been charged with one count of violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr Hate Crimes Prevention Act that was enacted in October 2009.

I feel bad for Sanjay Dutt, says Ameesha Patel

Actress Ameesha Patel says she feels bad for actor friend, Sanjay Dutt, whose conviction has been upheld in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, and hopes things can be “reversed” for him.

The Supreme Court recently upheld the conviction of Sanjay Dutt under the Arms Act in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case and sentenced him to five-year imprisonment. Dutt has already served 18 months in jail and will have to serve remaining three years and six months. He has been given four weeks’ time to surrender.

Foetus, not mother, was main focus, says Savita Halappanavar’s death report

Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar, who died in Ireland last year after being denied abortion, may have been saved had the hospital staff not paid “overemphasis” on the welfare of the unviable foetus and “underemphasis” on her deteriorating health, according to an inquiry report.

The report by the Health Service Executive on 31-year-old Savita’s death at Galway University Hospital found that her “vital signs were inadequately monitored; she was seriously ill, but that this was not acted on… she had further deteriorated, and still this was not acted on adequately”.

Abu Jundal may be shifted to Navi Mumbai jail

Authorities on Tuesday told the special MCOCA court that they are contemplating shifting the suspected LeT operative and key plotter of 26/11 terror strikes Abu Jundal from Arthur Road jail here to a facility at Taloja in Navi Mumbai.

“The Arthur Road Jail officials told the court that they are contemplating to shift Jundal to Taloja jail but the decision will be taken in couple of days”, Jundal’s lawyer Ejaz Naqvi said without elaborating.

US says North Korea”s plan to restart atomic reactor ”extremely alarming”

The United States has described the prospect of North Korea restarting a mothballed atomic reactor as “extremely alarming”. North Korea said it would reactivate all facilities at its main Yongbyon nuclear complex to ease its electricity shortage and strengthen its nuclear capability. The reactor was shut down in 2007 as part of international nuclear disarmament talks that have since stalled, reports the Guardian. The move came a day after Pyongyang announced a “new strategic line” focusing on its nuclear programme and economy.

Tourist police to be deployed shortly at Golconda Fort

To ensure safety and security of tourists, tourist police will be deployed shortly at Golconda Fort. As a matter of fact union ministry for tourism had planned to deploy tourist police force, following a spate of attacks on foreign tourists in 2010. Though the Centre released funds for tourist force at the Golconda Fort last year, the money was lying with the principal secretary. It has not been utilized so far.

Man electrocuted to death
(Siasat News): A man electrocuted to death in Madhapur when he came into contact with a live wire.

According to Madhapur police, Chinna Rao, 22, resident of Balanagar, has been working as an electrician. Yesterday, he was busy working near Hi-Tech City railway station on a 15 ft height.

Moreover, KV11 high-tension wire was passing from near him and unknowingly, he came into contact with the same wire and fell down from the top.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
