Fish oils show promise against cancer

Washington, April 3 (ANI): In a mice study, a team of UC Davis scientists has found that a product resulting from a metabolized omega-3 fatty acid helps combat cancer by cutting off the supply of oxygen and nutrients that fuel tumor growth and spread of the disease.

The groundbreaking study was a collaboration among multiple UC Davis laboratories and Harvard University.

156 judges die on duty over last 5 years in China

Beijing, Apr. 3 (Xinhua-ANI): A total of 156 judges died while on duty from 2008 to 2012, according to a Wednesday statement from the Supreme People”s Court (SPC).

The majority of the judges died due to disease, the statement said.

Since October 2006, the SPC and relevant departments have jointly allocated subsidies to the relatives of judges who die on duty. (Xinhua-ANI)

Susan Charles, UC Irvine professor of psychology and social behavior, and her colleagues conducted the study in order to answer a long-standing question: Do everyday irritations add up to make the straw that breaks the camel’s back, or do they make us stronger and “inoculate” us against later tribulations?

Raking up the issue of misuse of CBI, Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav today said fighting with the government is not easy as it can use CBI and put one in jail.

“Sarkar se ladna asan nahi hai. Sarkar ke hazaron haath hote hain. CBI ka upyog kar sakti hai…jail me dal sakti hai” (It’s not easy to fight with the government. It has thousands of hand and can use CBI and put one in jail),” he told reporters here in reply to a question.

Two Pakistani sisters killed for honour

Islamabad, April 3 (IANS) Two brothers shot dead their two sisters and two men in Pakistan’s Sindh province, a media report said Wednesday in what is believed to be another incident of honour killing in the country.

The killings took place in Nawabshah, Geo News reported.

Mosa and Shaukat Zardari fatally shot Ismail and Yousuf in their field in Gulzar Zardari village and later killed their sisters Qazbano and Shehzadi at home, said police.

The two brothers surrendered to police after the killings.

Washington confirms US woman raped in Rio de Janeiro

The US State Department Tuesday confirmed the US nationality of the tourist raped last weekend in a transit van in Rio de Janeiro.

“We can confirm that a US citizen was sexually assaulted in Rio de Janeiro. Our thoughts are with the victim at this difficult time,” spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said at her daily press conference.

According to the tourist’s complaint, the incident occurred early Saturday morning when she and her boyfriend boarded a minibus that was driving through the tourist neighbourhood of Copacabana and was en route to the bohemian and central Lapa neighbourhood.

US man indicted for racially motivated assault on Sikh man

Washington, April 3 (IANS) A federal grand jury in Seattle has indicted a man in Washington state on a federal hate crime charge relating to a racially motivated assault of a 50-year-old Sikh man.

Jamie W. Larson appeared Tuesday before a US magistrate judge after his arrest by the FBI, where he pleaded not guilty, the Seattle Times reported.

He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

PM promises more reforms, steps to spur growth, investment

New Delhi, April 3 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday said his government would act decisively to boost India’s economic growth and roll out more reforms such as liberalising the foreign direct investment (FDI) regime in the coming months.

“We are reviewing the FDI policy comprehensively to see what more can be done in the coming months,” the prime minister said, addressing industry captains at the CII National Conference and Annual General Meeting in the capital.

Chiranjeevi seeks Sanjay Dutt’s pardon

Sanjay Dutt has one more supporter in the form of Union Tourism Minister K Chiranjeevi who said that the Bollywood star should be pardoned.

“He has suffered enough trauma all these years and he has agreed his mistake,” Chiranjeevi told reporters here on Wednesday.

Siblings arrested for theft; stolen jewellery recovered

A 22-year-old woman was arrested along with her brother for allegedly stealing jewellery from her employer’s residence, police said today.

Jewellery worth Rs 5 lakh was recovered allegedly from Manita and Ranbir (33), who allegedly stole it from from her employer’s house in Ashok Vihar, P Karunakaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West), said.

Manita was interrogated by the police after her employer Rajni Mittal reported the theft to police.

For the second time in two weeks, Mulayam Singh Yadav today praised BJP veteran L K Advani who was earlier lauded by the Samajwadi Party supremo as the “tallest leader” of the country.

Mulayam’s praise of Advani on March 23 had triggered speculation he was perhaps cosying up to the BJP with an eye on the Lok Sabha elections.

Student committed suicide

Fearing poor results in examinations, a class IX student allegedly committed suicide in her residence here, police said today.

The incident was reported from Narela last evening and the deceased has been identified as Pinki (14).

No suicide note was found and her parents claimed that she was depressed over her exam results.

Driver Santosh Mane pronounced guilty for killing nine people

A sessions court held Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation driver Santosh Mane guilty today for mowing down nine people and injuring 37 others in January 25 last year.

The judge will pronounce the sentence on the quantum of punishment on April 8.

Rejecting the defence argument that the driver acted in a fit of insanity as he was mentally disturbed, additional sessions judge V K Shevale who pronounced his order in a jampacked court room observed that Mane had committed the crime in a conscious state of mind and he was fully aware of the consequences of his actions.

Protest over Facebook comment: 11 policemen injured

At least 11 policemen were today injured when some protesters, on way to submit memorandum about a “derogatory” comment on a social networking site against a community, turned violent and pelted stones on police personnel in Nagaur district of Rajasthan.

The crowd was on way to submit memorandum at district administration office in Makrana town when it changed its
route halfway and marched towards the police station and pelted stones, police said.

The stone pelting, which left 11 policemen injured, prompted the police to use force to control the unruly mob.

Feds: Man stole US cancer data to study in China

Suspicion quickly fell on a research assistant who had been working in a scientist’s lab when three vials of a possible cancer-fighting compound disappeared recently from the professor’s desk at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Security video showed Hua Jun Zhao, who studied in China and whose wife lives there, was the only person who entered the professor’s office that day. Investigators later found research results from another professor on Zhao’s computer.

Fulfil norms within year for getting recognition:CM to schools

One-year time span will be given to private schools in Haryana to fulfil prescribed norms to become eligible for recognition, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said today.

Such (private) schools will have to submit affidavits that they will fulfil prescribed norms within a year for
becoming eligible for recognition,” he said presiding over a meeting of the Private Schools Welfare Association here.

However, the schools not fulfilling prescribed norms under the Right to Education Act will not be closed and will
continue the admission process, Hooda said.

Kejriwal announces civil disobedience movement from April 6

AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, whose indefinite fast against “inflated” power and water bills entered the 12th day, today announced the next course of the Civil Disobedience Movement which will start from April 6.
