Liyaqat Shah in judicial custody till April 12

Suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Liaqat Shah was on Saturday sent to judicial custody till April 12 by a Delhi court. A controversy broke over Shah’s arrest by Delhi Police, which claimed that he was a Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist who had come to the national capital to plan a suicide attack. However, the charges were contested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police saying that he was returning to the Valley for surrendering.

65-year-old US man accuses hospital nurse of raping him

A 65-year-old man has alleged that a young female nurse raped him at Temple University Hospital in the middle of the night last month.

The unidentified man, who was recovering from a motorcycle accident at a Philadelphia hospital, said that the nurse entered his room at around 3:30 am, offered to bathe him and then sexually assaulted him in a bathroom, the New York Daily News reported.

Police are investigating the man’s claims.

Meanwhile, the hospital has denied the sex assault claims.

Don’t panic over Saudi Arabia situation: Chandy

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Saturday said that given the diplomatic and trade relations with Saudi Arabia, people from the state in that country and their kin back home have little cause for worry.

“At the moment, there is no cause for panic over the labour issues in Saudi Arabia. We are confident that on account of the excellent diplomatic and trade relations that we have with Saudi Arabia, things can be sorted out,” Chandy told reporters at a hurriedly called press conference.

A Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman has rejected a statement attributed to the spokesman of the President of Afghanistan that Pakistan has imposed pre-conditions for the peace process, saying it is not wrecking the peace talks by making impossible demands. The spokesperson on Friday claimed that Pakistan has not laid down any pre-conditions for the peace process, the Nation reports. In an official statement the spokesman said Pakistan is wholeheartedly supporting and facilitating the peace process without any conditions or preference for any particular group or party.

SP slams Beni’s remark, demands his removal from ministry

The war of words between Union minister Beni Prasad Verma and Samajwadi Party continued today with the latter slamming the Congress leader for his remarks on the poll prospects of the Mulayam Singh Yadav-led party.

Reacting sharply to Verma’s remark, Samajwadi Party said Congress would suffer due to such “baseless” statements and demanded his removal from the Union ministry.

Sunita Williams to start her India trip April 1

Indian American astronaut Sunita Williams, who holds the world record for the longest spaceflight by a female astronaut, will start her India trip on April 1 from the national capital.

Williams will visit the National Science Centre (NSC) in the national capital on April 1 and interact with students and teachers.

“The centre will host Sunita L. Williams (Captain, US Navy) and NASA astronaut on April 1. She will be interacting with a select group of students and teachers,” an official of the NSC said.

Former minister’s son arrested with stolen vehicles

The son of a former minister was arrested along with his associate and two stolen vehicles were seized from their possession at Belari village in Bihar’s Samastipur district, police said today.

After finding former minister Ramashray Sahni’s son Mukesh Kumar Sahni and his associate Ganga Prasad Singh standing at a garage with a car and a pick-up van last night, the villagers surrounded them and informed the local police, Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar Sinha said.

Nurse gang-raped, three held

A nurse, returning home from the market was gangraped allegedly by three men in Bihar’s Saharsa district, police said.

The 35-year-old nurse, working at a private nursing home, was returning home after buying vegetables from the market when the three allegedly assaulted her and dragged her to an isolated place where they gangraped her last night, Superintendent of Police A K Satyarthi said today.

The victim was admitted to a hospital for medical tests, he said.

The three alleged rapists have been arrested, Satyarthi said.

Samajwadi Party takes on Beni, calls him ”frustrated”

The Samajwadi Party (SP) on Saturday hit back at Beni Prasad Verma over his comment that Mulayam Singh Yadav”s party will win only four seats in the Lok Sabha polls and there will be a ”funeral procession” for the party, saying the Union Steel Minister is frustrated.

“Beni Prasad Verma is my elder and had been in our party for quite a long time. I can understand his frustration because his son lost twice before our candidates. When he contested from Ayodhya, he managed to get just 400 votes,” said Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav.

Shamsabad reels under water scarcity

With the onset of summer Shamsabad is facing severe water shortage. Residents of Muslim localities submitted a memorandum to Muslim Welfare Association Shamsabad mandal and demanded steps to solve the water scarcity problem.

Mohammed Mushtaq Mohiuddin president Muslim Welfare Association submitted the memorandum to MPDO Srinkant Reddy and EORD Ravindar Reddy and demanded daily supply of water in Muslim localities and repair of bore wells.

Two more rape cases reported in Odisha

Two more sexual assault incidents came to light at separate places in Odisha with a 21-year-old woman being gangraped and a 4-year-old girl raped in Angul and Keonjhar districts respectively.

The woman, who belonged to Balikhamana village under Handapa police station of Angul district, had gone to nearby Bainsina village with a relative to witness a yatra on Wednesday night, police said today.

When she went to a nearby eatery to drink water, three youths forcibly took her to a secluded place and raped her, officer-in-charge of Handapa Ramesh Chandra Das said.
