Syrian actress ‘attacked’ while reading ‘pro Assad’ poem in Cairo

A Syrian actress has accused Islamists of attacking her at the Cairo Opera House where she was reading a poem supportive of President Bashar Al Assad.

According to sources, Raghda, a staunch backer of Al Assad, claimed that Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood was behind the attack, which left her with bruises.

Bur, the Supreme Culture Council, an Egyptian governmental agency that organised the poetry-reciting event, accused Raghda of provoking the audience with her poem, Gulf News reports.

Excessive salt consumption contributed to 2.3 million deaths from heart attacks, strokes and other heart-related diseases throughout the world in 2010, researchers have claimed.

The fatality represents 15 percent of all deaths due to these causes.

The researchers analyzed 247 surveys of adult sodium intake, stratified by age, gender, region and country between 1990 and 2010 as part of the 2010 Global Burden of Diseases Study.

Sodium levels high in children`s snacks: Scientists

Researchers have revealed that around 75 percent of snacks targeted at children have a high sodium content that could increase the possibility of long-term health risks, says a study.

Nearly 75 percent of commercial pre-packaged meals and savoury snacks for toddlers are high in sodium, according to research presented at the American Heart Association`s Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions.

Pain reliever Naproxen may help combat flu

Naproxen, the over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drug, may also exhibit antiviral activity against influenza A virus, a team of French scientists has concluded.

New influenza vaccines must be developed annually, because the surface proteins they target mutate rapidly, the way cars used to get a whole new look every year.

The researchers, led by Anny Slama-Schwok of the Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique, Jouy en Josas, France, found a much more stable, reliable target for anti-influenza activity.

Eating soybeans could cut cancer risk

Proteins found in soybeans, could inhibit growth of colon, liver and lung cancers, a new study has revealed.

Soybean meal is a bi-product following oil extraction from soybean seeds. It is rich in protein, which usually makes up around 40 percent of the nutritional components of the seeds and dependent on the line, and can also contain high oleic acid (a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid).

The study, conducted by scientists from University of Arkansas, looked at the role soybeans could have in the prevention of cancer.

Australia out for 262 in first innings

India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bagged his ninth fifer as Australia were bowled out for 262 in the first innings on the second day of the fourth cricket Test at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Saturday.

Resuming at overnight 231/8, Australia added 31 runs with Peter Siddle emerging the top scorer with 51, his maiden half-century.

Siddle became Ashwin’s fifth victim as the offie finished with five for 57.

Israel and Turkey restore full diplomatic ties

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan reached an agreement Friday that ends the diplomatic dispute spurred by the 2010 deaths of nine Turkish activists at the hands of Israeli commandos.

The unexpected breakthrough came during a telephone call between the two premiers with input from US President Barack Obama, who was concluding a visit to Israel.

Minorities Scholarships – Govt. released Rs. 15,17,54,000

State Govt. has released the Scholarship amounts to the tune of Rs. 15,17,54,000 Finance Dept. issued a G.O. Rt. No. 1106 yesterday.

According to the orders issued by Principal Secretary of Finance Department, this amount has been released as the share of State Govt. in implementing the centrally sponsored scholarships scheme for the students belonging to Minorities. As per the terms and conditions of this scheme, the state Govt. has to bear 25% of the amounts.

Malala gets Freedom of Expression Award in UK

Pakistani teenage women education activist Malala Yousafzai has been given Freedom of Expression Award in Britain.

Malala, who raised voice for female education, was shot and critically injured by Taliban last year in Swat.

Malala, who was severely injured in the head, has started attending school after recovery, the Nation reports.

According to the paper, a simple and dignified ceremony was arranged by an organisation known as Index for giving award, but Malala herself could not attend the ceremony.

Zardari quits PPP co-chairman post

Asif Ali Zardari has quit the office of Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) co-chairman, making his son Bilawal Bhutto the party’s patron-in-chief.

The decision was taken in view of a case in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against the president’s dual office.

According to the Dawn, Wasim Sajjad, a counsel for the federation, had informed the LHC that Zardari was a co-chairman of the PPP, which was a “private organisation”.

Wakf Board took possession of Daira Meer Momin in Sultan Shahi

A.P. State Wakf Board in a press statement issued yesterday stated that it has taken possession of Daira Meer Momin Graveyard. There were complaints that many irregularities are being committed in managing the affairs of this Muslim graveyard.

Maulana Syed Ghulam Afzal Biyabani, Chairman of Wakf Board issued instructions to Mr. Mohammed Abdul Ghaffar Deputy Secretary to enquire into the matter and submit a report to him.

Blackbuck poaching case: Salman, four others to appear in court

Bollywood star Salman Khan and four others will appear in a Jodhpur court on Saturday in connection with the 1998 blackbuck poaching case in Rajasthan.

Salman had not appeared before the court in February this year and his counsel said that the actor could not appear before the court due to his pre-scheduled shooting plans.

The court is expected to read out fresh charges against those accused in this case of
alleged poaching of blackbucks 14 years ago.

Court issues notice for the protection of Chudi Bazar Graveyard

Mr. Osmab Bin Mohammed Al-Hajiri, President of Deccan Wakf Properties Protection Society had filed a petition in the court under the instructions from Mr. Zahid Ali Khan, Editor of The Siasat Daily saying that some miscreants have made an attempt to dismantle the Muslim graves located at oontwadi in Chudi Bazar to convert it into stable for horses. They are desecrating the sanctity of the graveyard and spreading filth and dirt. This graveyard is a notified Wakf property. Its area is 3300 Sq. Yards.

10 killed, 200 injured in Bangladesh tornado

At least 10 people died and over 200 injured in a tornado which swept through Bangladesh’s eastern Brahmanbaria district, about 110 km from Dhaka, Friday evening, an official said.

The tornado flattened hundreds of houses, trees and electric poles while damaging crops on farmland in four sub-districts, reported Xinhua citing Nur Mahmud Mozumder, chief executive officer of the district.

The tornado, with a speed of over 70 km, was accompanied by hail storm and lasted for a few minutes, the official said, adding the victims were killed by collapsed houses and fallen trees.

Two tourists kidnapped in Egypt

Two foreign tourists were kidnapped Friday while travelling in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, a source in the Egyptian security services told EFE.

The victims, identified as an Israeli man and a Norwegian woman, were on their way by car from the resort of Taba, near the border with Israel, to Dahab when they were intercepted by masked Bedouin gunmen in a pickup truck, the source said, citing witness accounts.

Police found the car with its windshield smashed.
