One killed as small plane crashes in Russia

One person was killed and another was injured when a small biplane crashed in Russia’s southern Krasnodar territory.

The civil defence and emergency situations ministry said the Antonov An-2 plane, converted for agricultural use, lost engine power three km from Vostochnaya village.

The An-2 first flew as long ago as 1947 and hundreds are still flying in Russia and abroad, powered by the same nine-cylinder radial engine and four-blade propeller as was used in the initial design.

Top Maoist leader Sudershan arrested in Andhra Pradesh

Top Maoist leader Sudershan was Saturday arrested in Andhra Pradesh’s Khammam district bordering Chhattisgarh, police said.

Sudershan alias Sriramulu Srinivas, a member of the central committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist, was arrested near Vyra in Khammam district.

A key figure of Andhra-Orissa Border committee of CPI-Maoist, he was carrying Rs 20 lakh reward on his head.

Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Sudershan is a key accused in the assassination bid on then chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in 2003 at Alipiri near Tirupati.

Four held in fake currency notes racket

At least four of a gang involved in a fake currency racket were arrested in Odisha’s Bargarh district and counterfeit notes with a total face value of Rs.49,000 were seized from them, police said Sunday.

Based on a tip off, police conducted raids Saturday in the Kendubhata area of Bargarh district. The district headquarters town of the district is about 380 km from state capital Bhubaneswar.

Police initially arrested one person after he was found possessing some fake notes.

Delhi Police claimed that it has foiled a terrorist attack for distributing the peaceful atmosphere of Delhi. It also announced that it has arrested the mastermind of this conspiracy from Haji Arafat Guest House of Jamia Masjid area two days back.

The claim made by Delhi police is full of many contradictory statements, which raise suspicion.

India all out for 272, take 10 runs lead

Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon returned with career best 7/94 to bowl out India for 272 runs in the first innings on the third day of the fourth cricket Test at the Ferozeshah Kotla here Sunday.

Resuming at 266 for eight, India added four runs before Lyon picked up Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha in two consecutive deliveries.

India now have a lead of 10 runs.

Social activist Anna Hazare on Saturday said the general public has lost faith in the ruling Congress Party, as it has always “misused” administrative machinery, including the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its own selfish needs. Asked about the CBI raid on DMK leader M K Stalin”s Chennai residence immediately after the party had withdrawn its support to the UPA Government over the Sri Lankan Tamil rights issue, Hazare said: “Everybody knows that the CBI is under government”s control.

50-year-old man arrested for attempting to rape minor

A 50-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl in Fatehpuri village, police said on Saturday.

The accused, Madan Lal Yadav, was arrested yesterday and has been sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court here, they said.

Yadav, in an inebriated condition, had barged into the victim’s house on March 21 and attempted to rape her while she was alone at home, police said.

When the girl raised an alarm, some neighbours rushed to her rescue but Yadav managed to flee, police said.

ITBP constable arrested for raping minor in Dharamsala

A constable of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in Dharamsala.

The constable was here as a member of ITBP contingent to take part in the 61st All India Police Games that concluded here on Friday.

The victim in her complaint alleged that she was returning to her home after watching the closing ceremony of the police games on Fridayevening when the incident took place, police said.

She alleged that the accused first asked her phone number and when she refused he forcibly took her to an isolated place and raped her.

Bomb-making material found outside Delhi Secretariat

The Delhi police on Saturday night found eight bags containing bomb-making material outside Delhi Secretariat.

The bags reportedly were full of iron pellets. A patrolling team found the bag last night.

The security has already been tightened in Delhi in the wake of the recovery of an AK-56 assault rifle, three hand grenades, two magazines each carrying 30 rounds (cartridges), 220 gm explosives, a map of Delhi, dry fruits and a memory card during a raid from a guest house in Jama Masjid area in Old Delhi.

A senior police officer attached with Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) llegedly committed suicide by shooting himself in front of his family
members in a hotel at neighbouring Thane today, police said.

Though the motive behind Sanjay Banerjee (45), a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), taking the extreme step is being ascertained, police suspect that he was facing some domestic issues in recent months.

Banerjee, who had joined police force as Deputy Superintendent of Police through Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), is survived by his wife and two sons.

Moved by the plight of an orphaned girl who was sexually exploited by her uncle and gave birth to a child in a hospital here, the Himachal Pradesh High Court Saturday directed the state to take care of the duo.

“Ours is a welfare state and it’s the duty cast upon the state to take all necessary steps towards the welfare, care and protection of the mother and baby since she is unable to protect herself,” said a division bench of Acting Chief Justice R.B. Misra and Justice Rajiv Sharma said.

Special courts for Muslim youth soon: Minority affairs minister

Special courts would be set up soon for Muslim youth accused of various offences, including terror-related charges, Minister for Minority Affairs K. Rahman Khan said here Saturday.

He said that his ministry had written to the home ministry in February asking “cases against Muslim youth who have been arrested should be reviewed. We had also specified that special courts should be made for them”.

Kejriwal on indefinite fast over power, water bills

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal Saturday began an indefinite hunger strike to protest increased power and water bills in Delhi. The BJP too held a separate protest on the issue.

“In order to take the fear out of the minds and hearts of the people and to unite them, I’m sitting on an indefinite fast. This time, we are not demanding anything from the government. My appeal is directly to the people of Delhi,” Kejriwal said in a statement.

He said he would stop paying his electricity and water bills and asked others to also do the same.

Kerry meets Palestinian president in Jordan

US Secretary of State John Kerry has met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Jordan, a media report said.

The meeting was part of America’s renewed efforts to revive direct peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, Xinhua reported.

The meeting took place Saturday in Jordan’s capital city Amman, where Abbas stopped on his way to Qatar, a Palestinian source said.

Kerry was in Amman with US President Barack Obama, who visited Israel and the Palestinian territories earlier this week.
