TDP threatens stir over SRSP water to Warangal

The Telugu Desam Party on Sunday threatened to launch agitation if the State Government fails to supply adequate drinking water to Warangal district.

Talking to reporters after meeting Information Technology Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, TDP senior leader and former minister Kadiam Srihari alleged that injustice was done to Warangal district in release of water from the Sriram Sagar Project. He said of 10 TMC, only 2 TMC of water was released to the districts. Besides facing scarcity of drinking water, the farmers have been suffering due to non-release of adequate water for irrigation.

Viqarabad blast toll mounts to five

The death toll in Viqarabad blast mounted to five on Sunday.

According to police, 21-year-old woman Ameena Begum died of injuries that she suffered due to the blast at Rajiv Gruhakalpa Colony on Friday. She was undergoing treatment at the Osmania General Hospital. Two more children – Saicharan (7) AND Iliyas (9) succumbed to burn injuries on Saturday at Gandhi Hospital.

Meanwhile, the investigation agencies have intensified the efforts to solve the mystery behind the blasts. Besides the local police, a team of National Investigation Agency has also visited the blast site. (INN)

Indian bitter melon `Karela` may hold cure for cancer

An Indian origin scientist has received a 39,42-dollar grant from the Lottie Caroline Hardy Charitable Trust to continue her research on treating cancer with an extract from bitter melon, a vegetable common in India and known as ` karela ` in Hindi.

Ratna Ray, Ph.D., professor of pathology at Saint Louis University, is studying the effect of the extract from the vegetable, which is often used in Indian and Chinese cooking, on head and neck cancer cells.

Govt. to amend law to punish bribe givers: Narayanasamy

Minister of State in the Prime Minister”s Office V Narayanasamy on Sunday said that the government is to amend the Prevention of Corruption Act to punish bribe givers.

Addressing the National Editors” conference here, Narayanasamy said, his ministry has issued guidelines to sanction prosecution of government officers.

Asserting that the inquiry into corruption cases is now done in a time-bound manner, Narayanasamy said the Centre will assess the performance of government officers and whosoever is found to be not up to the mark, he or she will be removed from service.

Pak govt. should hold Musharraf accountable for human rights violations: HRW

Wrongly convicted NY man jailed for 23 yrs suffers heart attack day after release

An inmate, who was released from prison a day earlier because of a wrongful conviction, has suffered a heart attack, according to his lawyer. Lawyer Pierre Sussman said in a statement that his client David Ranta has been stabilized and is being treated in cardiac intensive care at a metropolitan hospital, reports the CNN. Ranta”s second-degree murder conviction stemmed from the 1990 killing of a rabbi during a diamond heist. A witness two decades later came forward and said he had been coached to identify Ranta from a police lineup.

Pakistan”s election process formally kicks off

The Election Commission of Pakistan on Sunday formally kicked off the process for the May 11 parliamentary polls with the issuance of nomination papers across the country, local media reported. Thousands of intending candidates have started receiving nomination papers from the offices of the commission, officials said. The candidates will start to submit nomination papers from Sunday until March 29, according to the schedule. The scrutiny of the nomination papers will be held on March 30-April 5. Appeals against the acceptance and rejection of nomination papers will be filed on April 9.

Ghaziabad girl gang-raped

A 14-year-old girl was gang-raped by three men here on Sunday. One of the accused has been arrested.

The victim had stepped out of her rented house in Hindon Vihar when the accused, who lived nearby, pounced on her, dragged into their room and raped her.

As some others came to the girl’s rescue, two of the rapists escaped while a third was caught and handed over to police.

“The medical examination has confirmed the rape,” Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar Yadav told a news agency. He said the three have been charged with murder too because they tried to strangle her.

Indian bureaucracy dangerous animal: Jairam Ramesh

India’s bureaucracy was “the most dangerous animal in the world”, Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh said here Saturday.

He was speaking at a event organised by an eye hospital to mark a camp it conducted in Jharkhand’s Saranda forest, considered a stronghold of Maoist guerrillas, in January.

The minister made the remark to laud Ranchi’s Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital for treating around 1,000 patients inside the guerrilla zone without the government’s support.

Sales tax official held for taking Rs 2 lakh bribe in MP

A senior sales tax official was caught while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two lakh here, Lokayukta sources said on Sunday.

Sales Tax Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Singh was caught by the state Lokayukta police here yesterday while he was taking Rs two lakh as bribe at his office in Bittan market area here from three transporters for uninterrupted operations of their trucks, sources said.

Lokayukta police had laid a trap to nab Singh on a complaint lodged by the Prantiya Welfare Transporters Association.

30k officers of central excise, customs to go on 3-day strike

About 30,000 officers of Central Excise and Customs will observe a 3-day nationwide strike beginning March 29, protesting against the working conditions and “delayed” promotions.

“The Inspectors and Superintendents of Central Excise will observe a countywide 3-day strike between March 29 and March 31 against the apathetic and indifferent attitude of the concerned authorities,” All India Association of Central Excise Gazetted Executive Officers said in a statement.

Amjadullah Khan condemns attacks on Muslims and Masajid in Myanmar

Once again communal violence broke out in Myanmar (Burma). Strongly reacting against attack on Muslims and Masajid, corporator Amjadullah Khan Khalid lamented upon the silence of international fraternity and said that international fraternity should break its silence at least this time and express solidarity with Muslims of Myanmar.

He appealed United Nations to take action against perpetrators of violence and those responsible for setting the masajid ablaze and direct the local government to take practical measures for the protection of local Muslims.

Salman Khan returns from US, to appear in Mumbai court tomorrow

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan returned to Mumbai early this morning after his health check-up in United States to attend his hearing in the blackbuck poaching case.

Khan, who was expected to attend the court proceedings regarding the blackbuck case in Jodhpur on March 23, was exempted from the hearing on medical grounds.

Khan has been charged under Section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, while others under Section 52 of the Act and Section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.
