Sonia Gandhi to inaugurate FM station in Rae Bareli

Congress president and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi will arrive on a day’s visit to her parliamentary constituency Rae Bareli on Monday. The Congress leader would be inaugurating an FM radio station of Aakashwani, the newly-constructed premises of the rail coach factory, and a post office.

She would also be laying the foundation stone of a girls’ education institute, and kick start a solar energy lighting project.

She is set to preside over a district level meeting too, before leaving for New Delhi in the evening.

Manmohan Singh to push growth at Durban BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said he looked forward to the 5th BRICS Summit in Durban in finding ways to revive growth, sustain macroeconomic stability and push investments.

In his departure statement ahead of leaving for Durban Monday, the prime minister said he hoped to discuss a host of issues with leaders of other BRICS nations, as also those from Africa invited to the summit, during his bilateral meetings on the margins of the event March 26-27.

Myanmar riot: 18 suspects arrested

Myanmar police have arrested 18 suspects in connection with a riot that killed at least 32 people and which left over 9,600 homeless, the information ministry said.

Ten other suspects are being hunted down for the riot in Meikhtila in northern Mandalay region that took place March 20 to 22, Xinhua reported.

Sources said 17 other suspects linked with arson in Yamethin, about 54 km from Meikhtila, were also detained by police.

Dozens of houses and religious buildings were reportedly set on fire in Yamethin Saturday night.

Man throws chemical at girl for refusing physical advances

An 18-year-old girl escaped with minor injuries after her boyfriend allegedly poured a chemical, suspected to be acid, on her after she refused his sexual advances. Though the incident took place at an isolated spot under Bheemunipatnam police station area yesterday night, it came to light today morning after she lodged a police complaint. P Ganesh, a first year BTech student and a girl, a native of Narasanapeta area in Srikakulam district had eloped from their homes to get married against their parent’s wishes and reached Bheemunipatnam area in the city on Saturday evening, police said.

Vikarabad explosion: Toll touches six

Three more persons today succumbed to their injuries taking the toll in Friday’s explosion at a house in Ranga Reddy district’s Vikarabad town to six today. One woman succumbed to burn injuries at a government hospital here. Aged around 35 years, Taslima Begum, undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital died today, police said. Two others, identified as Iliyas (9) and Amina Begum (aged around 21), were also among those who succumbed to their injuries in another hospital this morning.
