Six workers charred to death in fire at Bangalore factory

Six workers were charred to death in their sleep at a private seat making unit here in the early hours today.

The workers had stayed in the factory godown itself after night shift when the tragedy struck, fire brigade sources said.

The bodies of five victims were recovered at the spot where they had slept and of another nearby indicating that he might have tried to escape the blaze, they said.

Eleven fire tenders were rushed to the spot to put out the fire, the sources said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Film on Delhi rape slams casual mindset: Ashis Vidyarthi

Actor Ashis Vidyarthi, who is playing the role of a police officer in the first celluloid depiction of the Delhi gangrape and the massive protests that followed, said his character symbolised the chalta hai attitude of the administration.

“Most rape cases in the country remained unsolved because of the chalta hai attitude,” Vidyarthi told reporters on the sets of ‘Nirbhaya’, the film based on the rape which grabbed international attention.

Minor Dalit girl raped by college student in Amethi

A 15-year-old Dalit girl was raped by a college student in Kohara village here, police said today.

The accused, an undergraduate student barged into the house of the minor girl early this morning when her family members were away and raped her, superintendent of police, Alankrita Singh said.

An FIR has been filed on the complaint of the victim and she has been sent for medical examination, the SP said, adding that efforts were on to nab the accused who is absconding.

Polytechnic student arrested for raping minor

A 19-year-old polytechnic student has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl at Periya Agraharam area in the city.

Police said the sixth standard girl, staying with her grandmother, had gone to her relative’s house yesterday to attend a festival.

The boy, who was their neighbour, took her to an isolated spot nearby on his bike on the pretext of giving her a cold drink and biscuits and raped her.

The girl made her way back and narrated her plight to her relatives, who immediately informed police. The boy was arrested late last night.

Minor girl raped by teenaged neighbour

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her teenaged neighbour in Masvasi village in Sadar area here, police said today.

The incident took place yesterday when the neighbour took the victim to a secluded place and raped her.

Later, when the family members of the victim came to know about the incident they informed the police, who arrested the accused.

The girl was rushed to a local hospital where her condition is stated to be critical.

Hamas court sentences Palestinian to death

A Hamas military court has handed down the death sentence to a Palestinian convict in the Gaza Strip for collaborating with Israel, a media report said.

The sentence came just days after Hamas authorities in Gaza launched a campaign to fight collaboration, urging spies to turn themselves in for amnesty, Xinhua reported.

A source said the sentenced collaborator had not turned himself in during a similar campaign launched in 2010.

Since taking over Gaza in 2007, Hamas, a rival to Fatah which controls the West Bank, has executed 14 people, most of them collaborators, the report said.

No bikinis or kissing on screen for Tammannaah

Southern actress Tammannaah Bhatia, who is making her debut in Bollywood with Sajid Khan’s “Himmatwala”, has her reservations about wearing a bikini, as well as kissing on screen.

“Even in down south, while I was working, I had a few restrictions that I followed. I don’t wear a bikini on screen, I do not kiss on screen and I did not have lovemaking scenes either. I’m just going to continue what I always believed in,” said Tammannah.

Helicopter deal was tainted, says Antony

Defence Minister A.K. Antony Monday confirmed that corruption had taken place in the controversial helicopter deal with Italian company AgustaWestland. He added that a new defence procurement policy would soon be ready.

“Yes, corruption has taken place in the helicopter deal and bribes have been taken. The CBI is pursuing the case very vigorously,” Antony told reporters here.

Minor raped in child development project office

A 15-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two men inside a government office in Odisha’s Bhadrak district, police said Monday. Both attackers were arrested a few hours after the crime.

The heinous act took place in the premises of the child development project office at the block headquarters town of Bhandaripokhari, about 100 km from state capital Bhubaneswar, Sunday afternoon, P.K. Mohapatra, inspector who heads the local police station, told IANS.

India committed for Africa’s development, says PM

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday said during his meeting with African leaders at Durban he would reaffirm India’s “strong and enduring commitment” as a steadfast partner for inclusive development in Africa.

The prime minister, in his statement ahead of departure for Durban to attend the two-day fifth summit of BRICS nations, said the summit will be the first such on African soil. The event begins on March 26.

“The ‘Partnership for Development, Integration and Industrialization’ between BRICS and Africa will be an important theme of the Durban Summit,” he said.

Filmmaker Mohit Suri, who has worked with many newcomers, is now keen to team up with successful actor Saif Ali Khan in his next film.

Nothing is finalished yet, and he said it is “too early to talk about” the project.

Vikarabad explosion: Toll rises to seven

With one more person succumbing to burn injuries, the death toll in Friday’s explosion at a house in Vikarabad town of neighbouring Ranga Reddy district rose to seven today, police said.

Yesu alias Sreenu (35), who had suffered burns in the incident, died this morning while undergoing treatment at a government hospital here, they said, adding that condition of two others injured remains critical.

SRPF jawan held for making obscene gestures at girls

An SRPF jawan was arrested for allegedly making obscene gestures at girls residing in a hostel in Dhule district, police said on Monday.

Bhooshan Phulpagare (29), a jawan with the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), made some vulgar gestures at girls staying in a government tribal hostel at Devpur locality in Dhule city yesterday.

The girls informed their hostel superintendent.

Later, the hostel superintendent and girls caught hold of the jawan and beat him up before handing him to police.

Speeding bus kills girl, angry public torches vehicle

A speeding bus killed a 21-year old girl on her way to work at Mettupalayam, about 40 km from here, resulting in the angry public torching it.

The girl was on her way to work in a diamond making unit when the bus hit her while trying to overtake a bus. Though the driver sped away, the public stopped it after a distance, asked the passengers to get down and torched the vehicle, police said.

Moderate quake rattles Trinidad & Tobago

A moderate earthquake has rattled Trinidad & Tobago, causing some alarm but no reported damage or injuries.

The US Geological Survey says the magnitude-4.8 quake struck early yesterday and was centered some 81 kilometers northeast of Roxborough, an eastern town on the tourism-dependent island of Tobago. It was also felt on the Caribbean country of Barbados.

Its epicenter was about 46 kilometers below the surface.

In Tobago, police said they received calls from some jittery residents who lingered outside after the quake.

Four girls burnt to death, 16 injured in cylinder blast

Four minor girls were burnt to death while 16 others injured when a LPG cylinder burst into flames in Bihar’s Rohtas district on Sunday.

“Due to leakage in domestic LPG cylinder in the house of Santosh Chaturvedi, members of the family and neighbours had came out in the open passage,” Officer-in-charge of Dehri police station Sidheshwar Rajak said.

But the gas spread and soon it burst into flames killing the four girls.

Sixteen others who received burn injuries were taken to Baranasi Hindu University Hospital, police said.

AP Urdu Council, All India Urdu Mass Society for Peace in a meeting reviewed various issues. It demanded the Govt. to make arrangements for accepting applications in Urdu in all the Govt. departments. Steps should also be taken to install Urdu sign boards in all the Govt. offices.

Mr. Mukhtar Ahmed Fardeen and Mr. M.M. Ghouri monitored the meeting Mr. Syed Mujtaba Abedi presided over the meeting. He told that all the editors of newspapers would be apprised of the survey reports of Urdu sign boards. He told that Urdu speakers are disappointed due to neglecting Urdu in every field.

Steps taken by AYUSH for the development of Unani Medicine

Mr. Vasuki, Commissioner of AYUSH while addressing the annual day celebrations of Nizamia Tibbia College told that vacant posts of Unani doctors would be filled up soon. He also announced to celebrate hospital’s Diamond Jubilee celebration on its completion of 75 years next year. He told that the Dept. of AYUSH has already released Rs. 4.5 crore for the renovation of college building.

He advised the students to devote themselves for the promotion of Unani system of medicines. He also distributed prizes to more than 40 students.
