Pregnant women who sleep on their back at increased risk of stillbirth

Pregnant women in Ghana who slept on their back (supine sleep) were at an increased risk of stillbirth compared to women who did not sleep on their back, a new study has revealed.

In the study, researchers from University of Michigan found that supine sleep increased the risk of low birth weight by a factor of 5 and that it was the low birth weight that explained the high risk for stillbirth in these women.

British PM says new migrants should not expect a home on arrival

In a bid to cut down on immigration, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday announced a string of tough measures to over-turn the country’s “soft touch” image, restricting new immigrants’ rights to unemployment, health benefits and a “home on arrival”.

“Under the last government, immigration in this country was too high and out of control. Put simply, Britain was a soft touch,” he said during his long-awaited speech on immigration.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Deepak Bhardwaj was shot dead in a south Delhi farmhouse Tuesday morning by “two to three” unidentified people, police said.

Bhardwaj, who contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections on a BSP ticket and was the richest candidate with assets worth over Rs.603 crore, was gunned down in the farmhouse in south Delhi’s Rajokri area around 9 a.m., an official said.His associate was injured and is under treatment.

Amritsar: Girl gangraped, thrown out of moving car

A 22-year-old girl has alleged that she was raped by four men in a moving car in Amrtisar on Monday night.

ADCP crime Harjit Singh Brar said that as per the statement of the girl, she was forced into a car by some men at 8pm on Monday night when she was waiting for a bus to reach home.

The girl alleged that she was repeatedly raped by the four accused for at least 45 minutes and later thrown out of the vehicle, police said, adding the accused are absconding.

Court asks woman to rejoin husband at matrimonial home

A woman, who had deserted her husband, has been asked by a Delhi court to rejoin him at her matrimonial home on the ground that she has failed to fulfil her “marital obligations”.

The court’s direction came while granting a decree of restitution of conjugal rights under the Muslim Law in the favour of the husband.

The woman, who had earlier filed her reply in the court, stopped contesting the case and was proceeded ex-parte.

French troops kill 2 Indians in Central Africa; Hollande regrets

French troops killed two Indians and wounded six others when they opened fire on vehicles approaching the airport in the capital of the Central African Republic, as the strife-torn country was overrun by rebels.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday received a letter here from France’s President Francois Hollande expressing regret for the tragic incident.

Two Indian nationals were killed and six others seriously injured by French troops at Bangui Airport in the Central African Republic on Monday morning, the letter said.

Myanmar riot death toll is 40

The death toll in a communal riot in Myanmar has risen to 40, according to an official media report Tuesday.

The toll rose from 32 as eight more bodies were found when troops cleared the wreckage in the wake of the riot which lasted three days in Meikhtila from March 20, leaving 9,600 people homeless.

Meikhtila is in Myanmar’s northern Mandalay region, Xinhua reported.

The situation is now normal following the declaration of a state of emergency and with the intervention of the army to help bring about peace.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has left for Dubai after a tiff with his father, President Asif Ali Zardari, over the affairs of the PPP, leaving the party without its star campaigner for Pakistan’s general election.

Australia to withdraw most troops from Afghanistan

Most Australian troops in Afghanistan will return home and their main military base at Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan will be closed by the end of 2013, it was announced Tuesday.

Australia has some 1,550 troops in Afghanistan now, mostly in Uruzgan province. At least 1,000 will return to Australia by the end of this year, Defence Minister Stephen Smith announced here on Tuesday.

Xinhua quoted him as saying that the Nato-led International Security Assistance Force had made the decision to close the Tarin Kowt base.

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Guatemala, the US Geological Survey said.

The epicentre of the Monday quake, with a depth of 200.50 km, was initially determined to be at 14.5994 degrees north latitude and 90.4279 degrees west longitude, Xinhua reported.

(Siasat News): Police Vanasthalipuram has arrested a man for allegedly raping a woman.

As per the details, one Saibaba, 35, resident of SBH colony, Vanasthalipuram had sexually harassed a woman a week ago and tried to molest her on the road.

The said woman is married and following her complaint, the police arrested Saibaba. Further investigations are on.

Saudi Arabia warns citizens against fighting in Syria

Saudi Arabia has warned its citizens fighting against the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria that they will be detained immediately upon their return to the Kingdom.

In comments published by Saudi media, a Saudi interior ministry official said that participation in the fighting in Syria is in violation of Saudi laws.

According to Gulf News, Major General Mansour Turki, spokesman at the Saudi interior ministry, said that anyone who is proven to be intending to travel to Syria to join the fight against the regime they will be investigated and barred from travelling.

Three sentenced to 10 years in jail for rape

A local court today convicted three persons and sentenced them to ten years in jail for raping a college student in 2011.

D Saikumar, D Krishna and Mohammad Ghouse were sentenced by a sessions court in neighbouring Ranga Reddy district, while three others were acquitted.

A Bed student was gang-raped near Shamirpet, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, in May 2011.

The victim was on her way to her village when the accused, all of them auto-rickshaw drivers, offered her lift in a rickshaw and took her to an isolated spot and raped her.

Kerry, Karzai ‘on same page’ over peace talks with Taliban

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, who paid an unannounced visit to Afghanistan, has said that he and Hamid Karzai were ‘on the same page’ when it comes to peace talks with the Taliban.

Karzai has accused Washington of colluding with Taliban insurgents to keep Afghanistan weak.

But Kerry told a joint news conference that he is confident that Karzai does not believe the U.S. has any interest except to see the Taliban come to the table to make peace, Politico reports.

Omar lashes out at Centre over AFSPA, Liyaqat Ali Shah”s arrest

Commenting on the simmering issue of removing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in the valley, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said that the Central Government should show a gut to experiment with its removal.

“If the central government could hang Afzal Guru knowing well that it would have repercussions in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, then why cannot it gather the courage to remove AFSPA? I do not understand this,” Abdullah told media here.

He further questioned the Delhi police”s role in arrest of alleged Hizbul Mujahideen militant Liyaqat Ali Shah.

Holi powder kills one on Mumbai train

One commuter was killed and five others injured after they fell down from the footboard of a running suburban train, when some miscreants threw a chemical-laced Holi powder at them, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place around 8 p.m. Monday night when the victims were travelling on the footboard of a crowded Dadar-Thane local train.

“The powder caused severe injuries and a burning sensation in the eyes of the commuters and they lost their grip and balance and fell out of the running train,” the official said.

Girl raped in moving car

A 20-year-old girl has been gang-raped by four men in a moving car in Amritsar late Tuesday.

According to reports, the victim was returning home from work last night when two men forced her into the car near a bus stop.

Two other men got into the car a little later and took turns to rape her while they drove around the city playing loud music on the car stereo.

In her complaint to the police, the victim alleged that she was thrown out of the car near the city’s Cantonment area.

Urdu Academy is the only minority institution which has been issued complete funds under unplanned budget.
