Delhi cop’s son-in-law gets bail in dowry demand case

A Delhi court Tuesday granted two months interim bail to the son-in-law of a joint commissioner of Delhi Police after he was accused by his wife of harassing her for dowry.

Metropolitan Magistrate Jyoti Karel, granting bail to Arun Singh, the son-in-law of Joint Commissioner (Security) D.P. Verma, asked him to settle the dispute between him and his wife.

The court sent the case for mediation, after both the parties said that they are ready to compromise.

The court Monday granted one day police custody of Singh to Delhi Police.

Aurangabad arms haul case: Only two witnesses examined in six years

More than six years after the infamous Aurangabad arms haul case was detected, a special court here has examined only two of total 247 witnesses named in the charge-sheet, it came to light here Tuesday.

The matter was brought to the attention of Mumbai High Court’s Justice S.C. Dharmadhikari during the bail plea Tuesday of one of the accused, Abdul Azeem A.J. Shaikh, alias Raja, accused of parking a car in which the explosives were loaded, his lawyer Sharif Shaikh said.

India wants stronger strategic ties with Japan: Khurshid

India wants to further strengthen and expand its strategic partnership with Japan, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said Tuesday.

“My government looks forward to further strengthening and expanding the India-Japan Strategic and Global Partnership,” an official statement quoted Khurshid as telling media persons after meeting Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida here.

Khurshid is on a two-day visit to Tokyo – his first official visit as external affairs minister.

Terms of reference for handing over Liaqat case to NIA not yet finalised

Union Home Ministry is yet to finalise the terms of reference for transfering a case to probe the circumstances leading to the arrest of suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Syed Liyaqat Shah from Delhi Police to National Investigation Agency.

Asked whether any notification has been issued for transfer of the case, official spokesperson of the Ministry said he had nothing to share with the media now.

Sources in the ministry said the bureaucrats were still debating the terms of references for transferring the case from Delhi Police to NIA.

Explosives used for illegal mining seized in AP, 7 arrested

Police on Monday arrested seven persons and seized 170 gelatin sticks, 50 kg of ammonium nitrate and fuse wires from Nadikudi village of Guntur district.

The accused used the explosives for illegal blasting of rocks for mining, police said, ruling out any connection with Naxals or other terror groups.

Consent age for sex was 16 years in 1860: Shinde

Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Tuesday cited the 153-year-old IPC to defend his proposal for lowering the consent age for sex to 16 years, days after the anti-rape Bill passed by Parliament retained the age at 18.

Shinde, who was speaking at a conference on police reforms in the country, termed the criticism of his move for lowering the age as “ignorance of law” by some people.

Himachal court restrains Sahara group from collecting money

The Himachal Pradesh High Court Tuesday restrained the Sahara group of companies from collecting money from investors and directed the enforcement directorate to investigate the allegations of illegal activities against it.

Hearing petitions, a division bench of acting Chief Justice R.B. Misra and Justice V.K. Sharma observed that “prima facie a case is made out against Sahara group chief Subrata Roy and his companies”.

The court listed the matter for next hearing April 22.

Karnataka BJP leaders accuse each other of money-making

Karnataka’s ruling BJP was Tuesday hit by new allegations of money-making by its leaders with Excise Minister M. P. Renukacharya claiming he had given huge amounts to former chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda. Gowda dismissed the claims.

Renukacharya, who is expected to quit Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and join former party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa’s camp soon, did not give details of when and how much money he gave to Gowda and for what reasons.

‘750 MW solar power projects in Andhra waiting clearance’

Notwithstanding the claims by Andhra Pradesh government that it is taking all steps including promoting solar power to overcome the electricity shortage, 750 MW solar power projects are stranded in the state for want of clearances, said a leading industry body.

The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) said following the solar power policy announced by the state government in September last year, applications for setting up 750 MW of solar power projects were submitted and many more were in the pipeline.

Fasting Left leaders arrested in Hyderabad

Police Tuesday night arrested the leaders of Left parties, who were on indefinite hunger strike here to protest the proposed hike in electricity tariff and electricity cuts.

On the fourth day of the hunger strike, police removed the leaders from their camp at Indira Park and shifted them to a government hospital. The action came after the striking leaders’ condition started deteriorating.

Amar Singh, Jaya Prada meet Maharashtra governor to seek pardon for Sanjay Dutt

Expelled Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh and Lok Sabha MP from Rampur Jaya Prada on Tuesday met Maharashtra governor K Sankaranarayanan, to seek pardon for actor Sanjay Dutt.

Dutt, who has already undergone imprisonment of 18 months, was on Thursday sentenced to five years imprisonment in 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

“Amar Singh and Jaya Prada met the governor (on the Sanjay Dutt issue) this evening,” a Raj Bhawan spokesperson said.

Before arriving at the Raj Bhawan, the duo drove to the Bandra residence of Sanjay Dutt and met the actor.

Fire Mishap At Koti

A fire mishap took place at a function hall near King Koti here on Tuesday morning.
It was reported that flames, which erupted from a godown, engulfed furniture and other articles.
However, the Fire Services squads rushed to the spot and extinguished the flames. It is learnt that short-circuit was the reason behind the accident. (NSS)

Drinking Water Woes 100 crores alloted, not a penny released: CAG

The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) in it s report on the state finances for the year ending March 2012 has picked loop holes in the preparation of the annual budget as there was no consistency between the allocation and expenditure.
The CAG report, which was tabled in the State Assembly on Tuesday, while asserting that resorting to expenditure without budget allocations was contrary to norms and rules pointed out that one sixth of the budget allocations remained unspent.

CBI officer sent to jail

The Special Judge for CBI cases, Tis Hazari Courts, New Delhi has sentenced O.P.Sharma, formrt Deputy Inspector General of CBI to undergo a year”s rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs.50,000 each under Sections 7 and 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of the PC Act, 1988 in connection with a bribery case.

A case was registered by the CBI on a complaint against Sharma on June 16,1991. It was alleged that Sharma had demanded a bribe of Rs.10 lakh for not implicating two private persons (who were brothers) in a TADA case.

Mumbai blasts case: Amar Singh, Jaya Prada meet Sanjay Dutt

Expelled Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Amar Singh and Lok Sabha MP Jaya Prada, who are expected to meet Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan to seek pardon for Sanjay Dutt in an arms case related to the 1993 Mumbai blasts, met the Bollywood actor at his residence here on Tuesday evening.

The actor-turned-politician, Jaya Prada, earlier on Thursday said she is heart broken at the news of Sanjay Dutt””s jail term pronounced by the Supreme Court, and called him an innocent person who had been caught wrongly.

Six Kashmir policemen injured in blast

Six policemen were injured, two of them critically, in a powerful blast in a police station here Tuesday that occurred while they were inspecting seized explosives.

Those injured in the blast include the station house officer (SHO) of Parimpora on the outskirts of the city.

A senior police officer said the explosion occurred while the police personnel were inspecting the seized ammunition and explosives.

“The injured policemen have been taken to Soura medical institute for treatment,” the officer told IANS.

Senior police officers later visited the police station.
