Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah today underlined the need to make benefit of various social welfare schemes reach the downtrodden and poor sections. “Majority of 120 crore people in our country belongs to the weaker sections and are downtrodden or poor. Central and State governments have launched several schemes for the benefit of weaker sections in the society. The need of the hour is that benefits of these initiatives reach those who actually need it”, he said addressing a function organised by Arya Vaishya community at Palakollu in West Godavari district.

Hyd: 19 persons get three-day imprisonment for drunk driving

A local court has sentenced 19 persons to imprisonment of three days for drunken driving in the city. The court of 3rd Metropolitan Magistrate B Chengalaraya Nayadu yesterday convicted and sentenced the 19 accused after they were caught driving their vehicles in inebriated condition, an official release said today. The Hyderabad Traffic Police had booked 324 cases against the drunk drivers during its drive on March 22 and 23, conducted at various parts of the city.

Vizag girl Vootala finds place in Indian women’s team

Off-spinner Vootala Sneha Deepthi was selected today in the Indian squad for T20 and One-day ties against visiting Bangladesh women’s team.

Dhule: police officer seriously hurt in attack

An assistant police inspector was seriously injured today while trying to intervene in a street fight between two groups, police said. “API Dhananjay Patil was seriously injured when he was hit with a sword on his head by a person who is yet to be identified”, a police officer said. Patil is attached with Azad Nagar police station. According to sources, the suspect is the son of a local NCP corporator and is on the run. Patil is admitted in an ICU, police said. PTI

Two men rape a girl inside abandoned school building

A 20-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two persons in an abandoned school building in the NIT 3 area in Faridabad, police said on Tuesday. The incident happened on Monday when when the victim met the two accused near Dabua Bridge and took a lift from them as she already knew them, they said.

According to the victim, the two men offered to drop her to her relative’s place in Navada Village but instead took her to the school building and raped her, they said. She and her husband had come from Meerut to meet some relatives in Navada Village.

Myanmar Imposes New Curfews Amid Anti-Muslim Violence

The government of Myanmar has imposed a dawn-to-dusk curfew in three townships amid growing anti-Muslim violence that is drawing closer to the main city of Yangon.

US takes NKorea threats ‘very seriously’: Pentagon

The United States takes North Korea’s latest threats to strike targets on the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam “very seriously,” Pentagon spokesman George Little said today.

Another rhino shot dead, toll reaches 15

One more rhinoceros fell prey to the poachers’ bullet who also chopped its horn in Kaziranga National Park, taking the toll to 15 this year.

The carcass of the 25-year-old rhino with three bullet injury marks was found by forest officials this evening in
Baghe Tapu area of Sonitpur district, Range Officer Basanta Kakoti said.

The animal was killed last night and the poachers sawed away its horn, Kakoti said.

Baghe Tapo is about 50 kms from the range office at Biswanathghat in the Sixth Addition area of Kaziranga.

Ex-fiancee murders newly-married woman

A newly-wed woman, who was allegedly attacked by her ex-fiancee here on Sunday, died at a city hospital today, police said.

The victim, identified as Saroja (21) was allegedly stabbed on back with a sickle by one Raju at Kandukur area
after she broke off her engagement with him and married her lover on March 22, they said.

Police have already arrested Raju who attacked Saroja, working as a nurse, at a bus stop in the area in front
of her husband.

According to police, Raju was angry as the victim broke off her engagement with him on February 6.

Human remains found stuffed in bags on Hirakud Express

Human remains stuffed in a suitcase and two bags were found today from Hirakud Express here by Government Railway Police (GRP), an official said.

The remains were found stuffed in a suitcase and two bags which were found abandoned in S7 and S8 compartments of
Hirakud Express which arrived here in the wee hours from Amritsar”, said a GRP officer.

He said the victim appears to be a middle-aged male and could have been murdered in neighbouring Orissa.

‘Combat-ready’ N. Korea threatens US mainland, Hawaii

North Korea’s military put its “strategic” rocket units on a war footing today, with a fresh threat to strike targets on the US mainland, Hawaii and Guam, as well as South Korea.

The move came as South Korea marked the third anniversary of the sinking of its naval vessel “Cheonan” by
what Seoul insists was a North Korean submarine.

All artillery troops including strategic rocket units and long-range artillery units are to be placed under class-A
combat readiness,” the Korean People’s Army (KPA) supreme command said in a statement.

BRICS finance ministers agree on bank

Finance ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have agreed on a BRICS bank on the lines of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that will address the development needs of emerging and poor economies.

“It’s done,” South Africa’s Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan told reporters here after a meeting with his counterparts from the other four BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India and China. Finance Minister P. Chidambaram represented India at the meeting.

“We made very good progress,” Gordhan said.

Amar Singh, Jaya Prada seek pardon for Sanjay Dutt

Former Samajwadi party leader Amar Singh and party MP Jaya Prada Tuesday called on Maharashtra Governor K. Sankaranarayanan seeking pardon for actor Sanjay Dutt, who has been sentenced to five years in jail.

The Supreme Court March 21 upheld Dutt’s conviction for illegal possession of arms in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast case.

In a representation to the governor, Jaya Prada said Dutt had been absolved of terrorism charges. She urged him to exercise his discretionary power to grant the actor relief citing his background, contribution to cinema and good conduct in the last 20 years.

Five-month old undergoes heart surgery in AP

A five-month-old girl who was diagnosed with a congenital heart ailment, was successfully operated upon at a hospital here, a release said.

The daughter of Sreenu and Varalakshmi from Mallepalli village in Gandepalli mandal of East Godavari District got successfully operated upon by chief cardio-thoracic surgeon at the GSL Medical College General Hospital Dr T Rajendra Prasad and his team of doctors.

According to doctors, the baby had developed breathing problem a few days after her birth.

BRICS urged to help Syrian civilians

The BRICS countries should call for an end to indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian areas in Syria, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

BRICS should also insist that cluster munitions and incendiary weapons should not be used, it said.

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, which make up BRICS, are meeting in Durban for the annual BRICS summit March 26-27.

When BRICS countries met in New Delhi in 2012, they called for “an immediate end to all violence and violations of human rights” in Syria.

A manhunt has been launched to trace leading Marathi writer Laxman Mane, who has been booked for raping three Dalit women working at a school he runs, police said here Tuesday. Mane’s family meanwhile dismissed the charges.

“He is still absconding and police teams are investigating the matter,” an official from Satara police control told IANS.

Italian foreign minister quits over marines’ return

Italy’s Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi Tuesday said he was resigning to protest his government’s decision to send two Italian marines, accused of killing two Indian fishermen, back to India to face trial, reported Xinhua.

Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone returned to India March 22 following assurance that they would not face the death penalty.

The move caused anger among people in Italy, who had called for Terzi to resign.
