Local talent Saina Nehwal was nominated Player of the year -2012 by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

She will be vying with four other Chinese Shuttlers for the coveted Award.

Saina stands second in the World Rankings and had given sterling performance in 2012. She also won bronze medal in the London Olympics. (INN)

I am proud of Kargil operation, ex-Pakistani dictator Musharraf says

Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday said he was “proud of the Kargil operation”, during which Pakistani troops had crossed the line of control (LoC) and occupied positions on the Indian side in 1999.

Musharraf made the remarks when he was asked about criticism of his role in the Kargil issue at a news conference in the southern port city of Karachi.

Musharraf was the army chief when the operation was launched. He later toppled the government of premier Nawaz Sharif and assumed power.

Barack Obama appoints first woman ‘Secret Service’ director

President Barack Obama on Tuesday chose veteran agent Julia Pierson as Secret Service director, the first woman to lead the male-dominated agency, a year after its reputation was tarnished by a scandal involving agents and prostitutes in Colombia.

Pierson will replace Mark Sullivan, who retired in February and was in charge during the Colombia scandal – one of the worst in the agency’s history.

Three killed during Holi celebrations in Hyderabad

Tragedy struck Holi celebrations in Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday with the death of three people in three separate incidents, police said.

A youth drowned in a well in IDL area in Kukatpally here. Police said he had gone to the well to take a bath after celebrating Holi.

A six-year-old boy drowned in a water tank near Koyalagudem in Choutuppal mandal of Nalgonda district. He too was taking bath after playing Holi.

A youth, playing Holi, was killed after a truck knocked him down in Adigoppala in Durgi mandal of Guntur district.

Police arrests notorious gang of cheats in AP

The police arrested a notorious cheat today, along with three others, including his two wives, who they alleged were involved in several cases of cheating the public to the tune of around Rs 10 crore.

On receiving a tip-off, a special team arrested, Jinna Srikant, his two wives Jinna Mita and Jinna Ahalya, besides one M Venkat Reddy from Kompally, the police said.

After Sanjay, Katju to seek pardon for Zaibunissa 1993 Mumbai blast case convict

After seeking pardon for actor Sanjay Dutt convicted in a 1993 Mumbai blast case, Press Council of India (PCI) chairperson Justice Markandey Katju today said he would now appeal to the President to grant pardon to another convict Zaibunissa on humanitarian grounds.

Zaibunissa, 70 was convicted in the trial related to the 1993 Mumbai blasts case.

I have now made up my mind that Zaibunissa also deserves pardon. I was earlier considering her case and I had to go
through the judgement and other material. And now I have considered that and I am of the firm opinion that she also

DGS revises CDC guidelines to include hospitality staff

The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) has said that all Indian seafarers working on Indian or foreign merchant navy ships and cruise liners will now get Continuous Discharge Certificates.

In a recent order announcing change in guidelines for issuing CDC, the DGS said the certificates will be issued to
hospitality staff working aboard vessels as well as new entrants while serving seafarers having experience.

Seafarers who have working experience on board merchant vessels and have worked without an Indian CDC (will
be given the CDC),” the DGS order said.

MP: constable shoots and wounds ASI, commits suicide

A constable allegedly committed suicide after shooting and seriously wounding a police officer at Chhanbila police station on Sagar-Chhatarpur road last night.

Constable Sukhram Upadhyaya first shot Assistant Police Inspector Y K Awasthi with his service gun. Awasthi was
preparing duty roster of constables on the day of Holi.

Upadhyaya then left the station and shot himself about 100 metres away.

Sources said he was miffed after being put on `warrant service’ duty in another district and had an altercation with
Awasthi a few days ago. Further probe is on.

Mufti criticizes Omar Abdullah Government over curfew and arrests

People’s Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has questioned the Omar Abdullah-led state government’s repeated moves to impose curfew and arrest teenagers in the Kashmir Valley. He expressed these views while addressing a public meeting near Jammu. Tensions have been running high in the valley since the February 9 hanging of Afzal Guru, the Kashmiri native responsible of master-minding a terror strike on parliament on December 13, 2001. The local authorities have been cracking down on protesters and imposed curfew in several sensitive areas of the valley.

Acid-attack victim given job in Srinagar

The Jammu and Kashmir government today appointed the Hyderpora acid-attack victim to the state school education department, on compassionate grounds.

Local MLA and ruling National Conference provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani and Tanvir Sadiq, political secretary to the Chief Minister today visited the victim’s house in Baghat Barzulla and handed over an appointment order for her engagement in the education department, official sources said adding that it was done on compassionate grounds in the school education department.

Four of family killed in fire in UP

Four persons, including two children, of a family were charred to death and over 12 injured in separate incidents of fire in Farukhabad and Kasganj districts, police said on Wednesday.

Bhimbihari, Basanti and their children Rampyare and Gudia were killed in a fire that broke out in their hut in Anandpur village in Kasganj district late last night, they said.

In a separate incident, 12 persons were injured after they were trapped in a blaze that gutted over 100 huts in Manjha village of Farukhabad district.

Police officer seriously hurt in attack in Dhule

An assistant police inspector was seriously injured on Tuesday night while trying to intervene in a street fight between two groups, police said.

“API Dhananjay Patil was seriously injured when he was hit with a sword on his head by a person who is yet to be identified”, a police officer said

Patil is attached with Azad Nagar police station.

According to sources, the suspect is the son of a local NCP corporator and is on the run.

Patil is admitted in an ICU, police said.

Deputy sarpanch shot at in J&K

A deputy sarpanch was allegedly shot at and injured by militants in north Kashmir Kupwara district, police said on Wednesday.

Noor Mohammad Khan (50), deputy sarpanch from Bongamin Kupwara, reported at Police Station Kupwara in injured condition this morning, a police spokesman said.

He said Khan stated that he was shot at by militants inside the compound of his local mosque in the wee hours today when he had gone there to offer prayers.

“Khan sustained injury in left arm and has been admitted in Sub District hospital, Kupwara,” he added.

Indian prisoner’s death: J&K govt to take up issue with Centre

Days after it was revealed that an Indian prisoner was tortured to death in a Pakistani jail, J&K government on Wednesday said it will take up the matter with the Centre even as BJP demanded a strong message be sent to Pakistan that such inhuman act will not be tolerated.

“We will call for the details and we will take up the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs,” Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Home, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, said in Jammu.

It was a riot of colours as revellers on Wednesday thronged streets and by-lanes to celebrate Holi with security force personnel along the borders and in Kashmir no less enthusiastic in applying ‘gulal’ and exchanging sweets.

Manmohan Singh-Xi meeting will help build mutual trust: China

Ahead of the first meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Durban, China on Wednesday said such a meeting will help to build mutual trust and cooperation between the two countries.

Xi, will hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei told a media briefing here.

Asked to comment on the meeting between Singh and Xi, the first after the Chinese leader took over as President following the once-in-a-decade leadership change in China.

52 Taliban insurgents killed

Up to 52 Taliban insurgents have been killed and 45 wounded in operations in Afghanistan, the interior ministry said Wednesday.

The Afghan National Police (ANP) in partnership with the army and the NATO-led coalition forces conducted several cleanup operations in Logar, Ghazni, Zabul, Kandahar, Kunduz, Kapisa, Paktika, Paktiya, Helmand and Nimroz provinces, Xinhua reported.

“As a result, 52 armed Taliban were killed, 45 wounded and 21 other armed Taliban were arrested,” a ministry statement said.

Naval war room leak accused Shankaran loses extradition appeal

Naval War Room leak case accused Ravi Shankaran on Wednesday lost his appeal against being extradited to India to stand trial.

District Judge Nicholad Evans at Westminster Magistrates Court in London said in his ruling today that he had been presented with no evidence to prove that there wasn’t a “case to answer”.

The case will now be sent to the UK Home Secretary, Theresa May, who will decide on ordering Shankaran’s extradition to India.

Musharraf to appear before court on March 29

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has allowed former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf to appear in court on March 29.

Earlier on March 21, the SHC had granted the protective bail to Musharraf in three high-profile cases without touching the merits of cases. SHC granted protective bail for 10 days to Musharraf in the case of ‘illegal confinement’ of 62 judges after he declared a state of emergency in the country on Nov 3, 2007, reports the Daily Times.

Saina nominated for BWF Female Player of the Year award

India’s Saina Nehwal was Wednesday nominated for the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Female Player of the Year award for 2012.

Along with Saina in the reckoning are World No.1 Li Xuerui of China, who copped eight titles in 2012 including the Olympic and year-ending crowns.

Li’s compatriot Wang Yihan, who won the Olympic silver in London, has also been nominated besides the winning Olympic women’s doubles pair of Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei (China). Should a pair win, they will share the annual award.

Karnataka rebel minister Renukacharya sacked for anti-party activities

Rebel Karnataka minister MP Renukacharya was sacked on Wednesday following his expulsion from the ruling BJP for six years on disciplinary grounds.

A Raj Bhavan communique said Governor H.R. Bhardwaj had accepted the recommendation of Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to drop the excise minister.

Renukacharya was expelled from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) late Tuesday.
