Russian held in Poland over $12 mn fraud

A Russian national has been detained in Poland over suspicion of defrauding several companies of stock and property worth an estimated $12 million, the Russian Interior Ministry said.

According to Russian investigators, the suspect, Sergei Petrov, fraudulently acquired 252 million rubles (about $8 million) worth of shares in 2004 in the Urals-based UralinvestEnergo industrial group and the South Urals insulator plant, owned by the Uralinvestenergo corporation.

UAE varsity students donate $26,400 for Syrians

Students of a university in the UAE have donated about 97,000 dirhams (over $26,400) for displaced Syrians during a charity campaign.

Putin honours soldiers killed in Chechnya battle

President Vladimir Putin laid flowers Friday at a memorial in western Russia to 84 soldiers who were killed in Chechnya March 1, 2000.

Just six paratroopers from the 6th Company, based in the west Russian city of Pskov, survived after being cut off by retreating Chechen separatist fighters in the North Caucasus republic’s Argun Gorge.

The human losses were the Russian military’s highest on a single day during the Second Chechen War (August 1999 to May 2000).

Russian patriarch against electronic orthodox encyclopaedia

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has spoken out against spending money on an electronic version of the orthodox encyclopaedia series this week, saying it would be unprofitable.

The orthodox encyclopaedia was launched in 2000 to collect data about history and religion. Some 30 volumes have been published already and many more are still being compiled.

The idea of making an electronic version of the printed encyclopaedia has been proposed by the culture ministry, but the patriarch rejected the idea as unprofitable.

‘Dark Knight’ shooting: James Holmes may plead ‘insanity’

Lawyers for James Holmes, who allegedly killed 12 people during the screening of ”The Dark Knight Rises” at a movie hall in Colorado, United States, have indicated their client might plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

According to court documents, Holmes’ attorneys want the judge to declare portions of the state’s insanity defense laws unconstitutional.

Ghaziabad police nab SP leader’s killers

The Ghaziabad police Saturday claimed to have cracked the sensational murder case of ruling Samajwadi Party leader and lawyer Yashveer Singh that occurred Feb 25.

Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar Yadav said that the main accused, Mithhan Yadav, who surrendered before the Bulandshahr court, has been arrested, along with three others accused of the murder.

The three others have been identified as Lala, Manoj and Kapil.

Brazil launches nuclear submarine program

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Friday inaugurated a naval installation that will make parts for conventional submarines – and eventually a nuclear-powered submarine – under cooperation agreements signed with France in 2009.

The launch of the facility marks the first concrete step toward construction of what will be Latin America’s first submarine powered by a nuclear reactor.

“With this initiative, we join a select group of countries with access to a nuclear submarine,” Rousseff said.

300 Delhiites go on the rampage over 7-year-old’s rape in school

It’s been two days since the rape of an eight-year-old girl inside the premises of a municipal school here, but no arrests have been made yet.

The alleged rape of the student of Class 2 led to a violent protest outside the school and hospital where she was admitted on Friday afternoon, police said.

Three people were detained for questioning for the rape while 17 others were detained for destroying and damaging government vehicles and property.

Earthquake jolts northeast India, Bangladesh

An earthquake of moderate intensity rocked parts of northeast India and Bangladesh on Saturday, an official said in Agartala.

According to district administrations in Tripura and southern Assam, no loss of life or damage to property was reported.

An India Meteorological Department official said in Agartala that the 7 a.m. quake measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was in Karimganj (southern Assam), on the border with Bangladesh.

“The quake was also felt in many parts of eastern Bangladesh, besides Tripura and southern Assam,” the official added.

Eight killed in China mine blast

Eight miners have been killed in a colliery blast in southwest China.

The accident happened yesterday at the Liangshuigou Coal Mine in Muzhuo township of Zhenxiong county, according to the county’s publicity bureau.

An initial probe has indicated a gas blast in the mine.

Operation of the coal mine has not resumed after the Spring Festival, but the mine manager managed 20 miners to work in the mine without any safety check.

Twelve of them had been lifted out of the mine before the accident. The manager of the colliery has been in police custody.

Facebook Inc. announced that it has reached a deal with Microsoft Corp. to acquire its Atlas Advertiser Suite, a service that enables marketers and agencies to get the most out of their online advertising.

“We’re pleased to announce that we have agreed to acquire the Atlas Advertiser Suite from Microsoft,” Facebook said in a blog entry Thursday, without disclosing the terms of the deal.

Indian-origin British author Salman Rushdie has been named in the ‘most-wanted list of Islam critics to kill’ released by al Qaeda in the new issue of its English online magazine.

The shocking article in the Inspire magazine read ‘Wanted: Dead or alive for crimes against Islam.’

A fatwa was issued against Rushdie by Iran’s late leader Ayotollah Khomeini in 1989 over passages in his book The Satanic Verses.

Iran’s Khordad Foundation has raised the reward offered for his killing by GBP 500,000 to GBP 2.5 million.

Murder accused acquitted on ground of ‘insanity’

A man sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a labourer in Mumbai ten years ago has been acquitted by the Bombay High Court on the ground that he was suffering from a mental disorder. Tikaram Pandey was awarded life term by a Sessions Court for killing a labourer, Murugan, who was sleeping on a footpath at Carter Road in suburban Bandra on the intervening night of January 18-19, 2003.

Youth gets life sentence for kidnap, rape in TN

A local court in Gobichettippalayam near Erode awarded life sentence to a youth for kidnapping and raping a minor girl in 2010.

According to prosecution, 19-year-old Sakthivel kidnapped a 17-year-old girl with the help of three others on April 14, 2010 in gobichettipalayam. Sakthivel took the girl to Salem where and raped her.

The girl escaped from there two days later and returned to Gobichettipalayam and lodged a police complaint. The police arrested the four.

New TB drugs being tested in India

Research institutes in the country are undertaking trials to test new drugs to treat tuberculosis including the drug-resistant variety, Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad said Friday.

Indian research institutions are undertaking trials to test drugs, including Bedaquiline, Delaminid and PA-824, to treat both drug sensitive and resistant TB, Azad said replying to a question by MP H.K. Dua during a Rajya Sabha session.

2 children injured in explosion at Jeedimetla, explosive material found at Imlibun bus station

Strict police vigilance continued across the state in the aftermath of Dilsukhnagar bomb blasts. Despite strict vigilance an explosion occurred in the outskirts of the city which injured two children. It is said that the explosion occurred in a garbage bin at Jeedimetla area, in which two minor rag pickers got injured. Police cordoned off the area following the incident. According to sources it has been learned after primary investigations that the explosion occurred because of a tiffin box present in the garbage bin. However police sources have not confirmed this.

Naroda Patiya riots case: Petition in Gujarat High Court

A petition on behalf of the victims of Naroda Patiya riots of 2002 has been filed in the Gujarat High Court, seeking direction to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to file a report on investigation into the “larger conspiracy”.

Petitioner Amrish Patel demanded that SIT should be directed to submit either a closure report, or a charge sheet on the “larger conspiracy and connivance of the police”.

Moderate quake hits India-Bangladesh border

An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale rocked the entire north-east India and adjoining Bangladesh on Saturday morning. No casualties were reported, officials said.

According to a seismologist in Shillong, the quake was felt around 7.01 a.m. in most parts of the north-east region and neighbouring Bangladesh, and its epicentre lay along the India-Bangladesh border.

“The exact epicentre of the quake was on the India-Bangladesh border with western Tripura. The tremor lasted for about four to five seconds,” an official at the Regional Seismological Centre told IANS.

The Gujarat police officer, who was arrested by the CBI for his involvement in the alleged staged Ishrat Jahan shoot-out case of 2004, has resigned from the police force, a news channel reported on Saturday.

Jeep falls in river, 11 killed

Eleven people were killed and three others injured when a jeep plunged into Sai River in Jalalpur area, police said here on Saturday.

The incident occurred late Friday night when the jeep rammed into the railing of a bridge and plunged into the river near Ijari village, killing 11 people on the spot, they said.

Police said three persons were injured in the accident of which two have been referred to Varanasi in a serious condition.

The victims were returning from Varanasi after a cremation.
