Kashmiri student commits suicide at OU campus

A Kashmiri student committed suicide yesterday night at EFLU campus in Osmania University premises. The incident created panic among Kashmiri students in the campus.

29 year old Kamran Mudassir, belonging the Phulwama, Jammu & Kashmir is said to have hanged himself to death at the campus. However reasons for the suicide are still unknown.

Police told that Kamran Mudassir was having a row with his friend Waseem belonging to Maharashtra. Dean came to know about the dispute which was worrying Kamran.

Precautionary measures taken and vigilance maintained by the city police in the aftermath of Dilsukhnagar twin blast are bearing good results and several illegal businesses and activities are being unearthed. During such operations Abids and Nampally police seized Rs. 8 lakh cash and 6 kg gold in two different drives.

DCP denies frisking of bearded youth

A report has been published in Urdu newspaper dated 2nd March 2013, which claims that bearded youth are targeted during frisking. This is not true. I want to clarify that frisking aims at providing security to the citizens. Neither any particular community was targeted nor did photographers take photographs of any particular community while frisking. We have videography of frisking carried out every day. One can see that we have not offended anyone. This is true that we have intensified the search operation following Dilsukhnagar twin blast and will continue further.

100 million sharks killed every year

Sharks need to be better protected or many species could face possible extinction, as nearly 100 million of them are killed every year, according to a new study.

The rate of commercial fishing far exceeds what many populations need to recover, scientists have warned.

Sharks take years to sexually mature, produce small litters and are exceptionally vulnerable to overfishing.

They are being caught at an average rate that is 30 percent to 60 percent higher than they can sustain, the study said.

`Sleepwalking may cause health hazards`

Adult sleepwalking is potentially serious and may induce violent behaviours and affect health-related quality of life, a new study has found.

“We found a higher frequency of daytime sleepiness, fatigue, insomnia, depressive and anxiety symptoms and altered quality of life in patients with sleepwalking compared to the control group,” said Yves Dauvilliers from Gui-de-Chauliac Hospital in Montpellier, France, the study`s principal investigator and lead author.

Watching what you eat does not help you cut calories

Women who watch what they eat still tend to consume as many calories as those who are not dieting, a study has claimed.

Researchers at Utrecht University in Holland found that frequent dieters not only robbed themselves of the pleasure of food but also failed to lose weight and felt negative emotions about their eating, the Daily Express reported.

In the study, a group of women – who thought that they were taking part in supermarket food-tasting – were left for 10 minutes with high-calorie chips and chocolate-covered peanuts and low-calorie crackers and apple slices.

Pot can be detected in blood of daily smokers for a month after last intake

For the first time, a new study has found that cannabinoids-psychoactive compounds of marijuana-can be detected in the blood of daily pot smokers during a month of sustained abstinence.

Researchers behind the study suggest that the finding can provide real help in the public safety need for a drugged driving policy that reduces the number of drugged driving accidents on the road.

Three arrested in murder of siblings

Three men have been arrested in connection with the killing of minor siblings in the national capital, police said Sunday. Among those arrested is the maternal uncle of the children.

The decomposed bodies of Mansij and his sister Yashvi, aged seven and five respectively, were recovered from near the railway track in front of Pragati Maidan power station at around 9.30 a.m. Saturday morning.

The maternal uncle of the children, identified as Amit, and two other men, Pankaj and Shivam, have been arrested in the case.

New tattoo inks may cause complications that mimic skin cancer

Modern tattoo inks are causing increased complications like allergic reactions, serious infections and reactions that can mimic skin cancer, a dermatologist has claimed.

Tattoo ink`s composition has changed dramatically over the years. In the past, metal salts, lead, cobalt and carbon were used in inks but today, many modern tattoo inks (especially intense reds and yellows) contain organic azo dyes with plastic-based pigments, which also have industrial uses in printing, textiles and car paint.

Over 22,600 observers for Kenyan elections

Kenya’s electoral body said Saturday it has registered 22,600 local and international observers to monitor Monday’s general elections in this east African nation, Xinhua reported.

A total of 20,000 domestic and 2, 600 international observers from Kenya, East Africa Community, Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), COMESA, the Africa Union, EU and the Carter Centre have all been accredited, said a top election official Issack Hassan here.

Texting could lead to pain in the neck

Excessive amount of leaning your head forward and down, while looking at a phone or other mobile device may result in what some people call “text neck.”

“People get so focused on these devices that they end up holding their neck and upper back in abnormal positions for a long period of time; enough that other people coined the phrase ‘text neck,’ which is essentially referring to postural pain,” Chris Cornett, MD., orthopaedic surgeon and spine specialist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, said.

President Mukherjee arrives in Dhaka

President Pranab Mukherjee arrived in the Bangladesh capital Sunday morning.

He is to call on Bangladesh President M. Zillur Rahman and receive the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award.

He is expected to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition leader Khaleda Zia.

He will receive an honorary Doctorate of Law from Dhaka University at a convocation ceremony and also attend a reception organised by members of the Indian community.

Fire at Doordarshan office in Delhi

A fire broke out on the fifth floor of Doordarshan office in Mandi House in New Delhi in the wee hours of Sunday, fire brigade officials said.

The blaze was reported from the Doordarshan office around 11:55 pm and 20 fire tenders were rushed to the spot, they said.

The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

India were 54 for one at lunch on day two of the second cricket Test against Australia at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here Sunday.

Resuming at five for no loss, India added 49 runs to the total in 25 overs at the cost of Virender Sehwag (6).

Congress incapable of taking India forward: Modi

Targeting the UPA Government, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Congress Party is incapable of taking India forward.

Addressing the concluding session of the BJP”s National Council meeting here, Modi said: “The UPA Government is incapable of taking the nation forward. This government in Delhi is a big challenge for us. In spite of our being there, India should have such a government – that is not acceptable.”

Group clash at Balapur

Tension prevailed in Balapur area yesterday night after a clash between two communities. It is said that one person injured in the clash while police cops were hurt in stone pelting. Heavy police force controlled the situation till late night. Police picket has been deployed as precautionary measure and police has intensified patrolling.

It is said that 3 youth belonging to Barkas reached a house at Balapur but they were stopped by the local people. Soon two groups gathered. However police refused to declare the incident as communally incited.

Asad Owaisi arrested and released at Baswa Kalyan

Karnataka police on Saturday arrested Hyderabad LoK Sabha member Asaduddin Owaisi for violating orders. According to the reports received here MIM President Asaduddin Owaisi was arrested at Baswa Kalyan, Karnataka when he was leaving for Humnabad.

According to details Midki police arrested him on the charges of addressing a public meeting without police permission and later released. Two corporators Samad bin Abdat and Wajahat Ali Khan were also present along with it.

Indian-origin scientist Subra Suresh named 9th President of Carnegie Mellon University

Indian-origin engineer and scientist, Subra Suresh, has become the ninth president of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, US.

Earlier, Suresh, who left India in 1977, was the director of the National Science Foundation.

He was the first Asia-born director of the NSF, which was created by Congress in 1950 with the primary goal of promoting science.

Suresh was nominated for the NSF directorship in 2010 by U.S. President Barack Obama, the Wall Street Journal reports.
