No law and order in UP, says Cong

Attacking the SP government in Uttar Pradesh over the killing of a police officer, Congress today alleged there is no law and order in the state and demanded a CBI probe into the matter. “UP’s law and order is very bad. There is in fact no law and order in the state. If a police officer is killed and those facing the charge for the killing include a minister of the state government, then what is left. “If a DSP rank officer of the police is not safe there, what can be said about the plight of the common man,” party spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters here.

Police Inspector accused of extortion dismissed

A Police Inspector, accused of extorting money from shopkeepers and local residents, has been dismissed from service. “Police Inspector Sanjeev Kokil has been dismissed from service,” Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal told PTI today. However, he declined to divulge further details. In January 2011, the shopkeepers and residents of Musafirkhana area near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus Railway station had complained to Dayal, the then Police Commissioner, that Kokil harassed them and extorted money from them taking advantage of his position.

Girl thrashing: Magisterial probe ordered; FIR registered

The Punjab government today ordered a magisterial probe and registered a case into the alleged thrashing of a girl in public view by policemen in Tarn Tarn district of the state. The state police also tendered an unconditional apology. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has directed the Tarn Taran District Magistrate to ascertain the causes and circumstances leading to the incident and submit the inquiry report within three weeks.

Kejriwal denies replacing Modi at Wharton India Economic Forum

Aam Aadmi Party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal today said Wharton India Economic Conference’s invitation to him and cancellation of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s lecture at the event were not linked. “I confirmed about 10 days back with Wharton that I would speak there. I am not a substitute. This is mere media speculation. Wharton’s invitation to me has nothing to do with Modi’s controversy,” he said. Kejriwal’s comments came against the backdrop of reports that he will be replacing Modi as the keynote speaker of the event.

Tewari writes to Azad, seeks trauma centre for Ludhiana

Union Minister Manish Tewari today sought setting up of a special trauma centre at the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana. In a letter to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, he said Ludhiana is the biggest city in the North with a population of over 30 lakh. Tewari, who is the minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, said though there are private medical centres in the city, there is no specialised unit in the government-run Civil Hospital for common people.

HC asks district judge to reconstruct missing files in rape

The Delhi High Court has directed a District and Sessions Judge to “reconstruct” within two weeks the records pertaining to a 20-year-old rape case, in which judicial and police files went missing. A bench of Chief Justice D Murugesan and Justice V K Jain also said that the trial court could proceed with the matter if the case had not been settled between the parties and the trial to be concluded within three months. In addition, the bench also directed for appropriate action against the officers responsible for missing of the files.

Narendra Amin gets bail in Sohrabuddin fake encounter case

The Bombay High Court today granted bail to suspended Gujarat ACP Narendra Amin, an accused in the 2005 alleged fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and subsequent murder of Kausar Bi, on medical grounds. The High Court also accepted Amin’s argument that he has already spent six years behind the bars in the alleged fake encounter case. Justice Abhay Thipsay, however, stayed the operation of the order for two weeks after CBI counsel Hiten Venegaokar sought time to move the Supreme Court to challenge the bail.

I was received like a bridgroom in my inlaws’ house: Pranab

President Pranab Mukherjee is wowed by the welcome given to him on his maiden visit to his ‘sasural’ at a village in Bangladesh’s Narail district, saying he was received there like a “bridegroom”. “Oh, they (the people of Bhadrabila village) received me like a bridegroom”, said a beaming President when asked how he felt about visiting the ancestral house of his inlaws for the first time. Mukherjee said though he got married in 1957, it was for the first time that he visited his inlaws’ house. Mukherjee’s wife Shuvra was born at Bhadrabila and spent her early years there.

MNS demands police protection for actor Nana Patekar

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) has demanded police protection for Nana Patekar, apprehending a possible threat to the life of the actor who portrays a police officer in the Bollywood film “The Attacks of 26/11”. “Nana Patekar is an asset to the country. He is a brilliant actor and the role played by him in the movie based on the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai is worth appreciating. Therefore, we demand that protection be provided to him,” MNS MLA Ram Kadam told PTI. He said terror organisations may dislike Patekar’s role in the movie and therefore the MNS perceives a threat to his life.

Tendulkar inaugurates cancer treatment centre in Hyderabad

Senior India batsman Sachin Tendulkar today inaugurated a foundation for research and treatment of cancers set up here by a group of doctors. Speaking on the occasion, he appreciated the group of doctors led by D Nageshwar Reddy and Prateek Sharma, who started the Gastrointestinal and Liver Foundation for Research and Treatment of Cancers (GIFT). “I think it’s named appropriately, GIFT. I think the greatest gift which any human can get from doctors is a life, to live and enjoy. Breathe freely, enjoy your freedom. I don’t think there is anything more valuable than that,” he said.

Sena MPs, legislators give month’s salary for drought relief

Shiv Sena’s elected public representatives, including MPs, legislators, have decided to contribute their one month’s salary towards drought relief work in the state. This was announced by the Sena group leader in Legislative Assembly, Subhash Desai, who said the funds so collected would be part of the “Shiv Sena relief fund” and would be used to launch programmes like cattle camps in the affected areas. The initiative would be launched by Sena president Uddhav Thackeray in Marathwada shortly, Desai said.

EFLU student made ‘physical advances’ towards roommate: Police

A probe into the death of Kamran Mudasir, a PhD student of English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), has revealed that he allegedly used to make “physical advances” towards his roommate, police said today. Kamran Mudasir, 29, a native of Parigam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district, committed suicide by hanging himself in his EFLU room campus on the night of March 2. Police had said he committed suicide due to differences with his roommate and fellow PhD student Vasim Salim Tamboli.

IPL-2 irregularities: ED records Preity Zinta’s statement

Bollywood actress Preity Zinta was today questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the second season of the Indian Premier League. The ED also recorded the statement of Preity, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab, for over 10 hours. “She complied with the summons issued to her by us”, said an ED official. Preity (38) appeared before the ED authorities at 10 AM and her statement was recorded for over ten hours, he said without elaborating.

Boy’s murder: Shivpuri simmers with tension, Sec 144 imposed

Violence over the alleged murder of an abducted local boy continued on second day today in Shivpuri town as a mob set on fire the official vehicle of a senior police officer, prompting the administration to impose prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPc. Trouble began this evening when mob pelted stones at the official car of Sub-Divisional Officer of Police S N Mukherjee with stones before torching it, police said.

Curfew imposed in 10 areas in Kashmir Valley

Curfew was imposed tonight in 10 police station areas of Kashmir Valley as a precautionary measure with the authorities apprehending law and order problem following the killing of a youth in firing allegedly by security forces in Baramulla district. Curfew has been imposed in Rainawari, Khanyar, Navhatta, Safar Kadal and Maharajganj police station areas of old city and Zadibal, Maisuma and Kalan Khaud in the new city, a police spokesperson said. He said curfew has also been imposed in Baramulla and Sopore.

Five MNS men arrested for beating north Indians

Five party workers of the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) were arrested on Tuesday for beating up parents of north Indian students, police said.

“Five MNS members have been arrested for manhandling parents of north Indian students seeking admission in a local school. At least five more are absconding,” police told IANS.

Though the names of those arrested were not available, police said they included MNS’s district unit president, his secretary and other office bearers.

Telangana is no appadam or dosa: Vayalar Ravi

Dropping enough hints that the central government as well as the Congress high command have kept the Telangana issue in cold storage, AICC emissary for the state Vayalar Ravi has again tried to play down the intensity of the issue, saying, “Finding a solution to Telangana is not as simple as preparing appadams or making dosas.”

Continuing his “casual approach” towards the Telangana issue, Vayalar said that it was not that much easy to take a decision on the issue of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.

The special MCOCA court today directed Arthur Road jail to file a report on the medical condition of key 26/11 handler Abu Jundal on his plea that he was ‘hallucinating’ about hanged terrorist Ajmal Kasab.

“Jundal had filed an application in the court saying he was mentally disturbed when detained in Saudi Arabia last year and was on medication when lodged in Tihar jail. He also said that Kasab was appearing in his dreams,” defence lawyer Ejaz Naqvi said, adding Jundal also complained of backache.

Curfew continues in Tanda, BJP chief denied entry in town

Curfew continued today in Tanda town of Ambedkar Nagar district, where violent protests had erupted after killing of a Hindu Jagran Manch leader.

State BJP chief Laxmikant Bajpai was stopped by police when he was going to the town from Barabanki, leading to criticism of the move by the party.

As many as 32 persons have so far been arrested for indulging in violent protests over killing of Gupta, district president of the Manch who was shot dead Sunday night, Home Department officials said.

The Manch had called for a bandh today in protest against the killing.

Some in anguish, some in fear, Venezuelans raced for home on Tuesday after the government announced the death of President Hugo Chavez, the firebrand socialist who led the nation for 14 years.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro’s voice broke and tears ran down his face as he appeared on national television to announce that Chavez died at 4:25 pm local time (3:55 pm EST; 1755 GMT) “after battling hard against an illness over nearly two years.”

Govt proposes to lower age for consensual sex from 18 to 16

The government has proposed to lower the age for consensual sex from 18 to 16 and reintroduce the word ‘rape’ instead of ‘sexual assault’ in the new criminal law amendment bill.

The draft of the bill has been readied by the government to replace the recently-promulgated criminal law amendment ordinance.

Official sources said the Union Cabinet is expected to discuss the draft of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2013 in its next meeting.

Anti-al Qaeda leader killed in Iraq shooting

A local leader of anti-al Qaeda militiamen was shot dead on Tuesday in western Baghdad, one of four people killed in violence in different parts of Iraq, officials said.

The pro-government militiamen, known as the Sahwa group, joined forces with US troops to fight al Qaeda during the Iraq war. Since then, the group has been a target for Sunni insurgents who consider its members to be traitors.

The leader was driving through Baghdad’s western suburb of Abu Ghraib when drive-by shooters sprayed his car with bullets, killing him, a police officer said.

Varun Gandhi acquitted in another hate speech case

In yet another reprieve, BJP MP Varun Gandhi was on Tuesday acquitted by a local court in a hate speech case filed against him during the 2009 Lok Sabha polls.

The order was passed by Chief Judicial Magistrate Abdul Quayyum here.

Two hate speech cases were filed against Varun in connection with 2009 elections.

While he was acquitted by the same court on February 27 in the case lodged in Kotwali police station, today’s order related to the case filed in Barkhera police station.

AIIMS student commits suicide in hostel

A 27-year-old pharmacology student was on Tuesday found dead in her hostel room in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here, police said. They suspect it to be a case of suicide.

Kirti Gokhar, pursuing her post-graduation, had consumed a poisonous substance, according to a medical report, police said.

The student, from Bhiwani in Haryana, was staying in the room along with another student.

“But she was alone in the room Monday night and was found dead at 11 am today,” said a police officer.
