Police thrashing: SC issues notice to Punjab, Bihar

Taking note of media reports of the thrashing by police of a Dalit woman and her father in Punjab and a group of teachers in the Bihar capital Patna, the Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the chief secretaries of both the states.

An apex court bench of Justice G.S. Singhvi and Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai while issuing the notice said: “We are taking suo motu congnisance…after seeing the disturbing visuals on television.”

John plans to donate, auction his clothes

Actor-producer John Abraham plans to donate and auction most of his clothes to raise money for a charity.

“I would like to give away most of my clothes to charity and empty my wardrobe. Our requirement is only two pair of jeans and four t-shirts, not more than that,” the 40-year-old said here Tuesday at PowerLight A Village, an initiative by Garnier Men.

Akhilesh remains non-committal on Raja Bhaiyya’s arrest

As opposition leaders demanded that former minister and independent legislator Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya be arrested on suspicion of conspiring to kill deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Zia-ul-Haq, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav Wednesday remained non-committal.

Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislators staged a walkout in the state assembly, demanding the arrest of Raja Bhaiyya.

The chief minister said the matter was now referred to the Central Bureau of Investigation and one should wait for the law to take its course.

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati Wednesday said the Uttar Pradesh government was protecting former minister Raja Bhaiyya, who has been booked for the murder of a senior police officer.

Scientists have proposed a new portable gadget that could help one detect strokes based on eye movement, says an American study.

A bedside electronic device that measures eye movements can successfully determine whether the cause of severe, continuous, disabling dizziness is a stroke or something benign, according to results of a small study led by Johns Hopkins researchers, reports Science Daily.

Girl allegedly raped, thrown into river in Manipur

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped and thrown into a river in a village in Manipur, police said Wednesday.

The body of the girl, who had been missing for the past three days was fished out of Haorang river in Imphal East district yesterday, the police said.

The body was spotted by some youths, who had gone to take bath in the river.

Family sources said the girl was missing for the past three days but they believed that she had gone to the house of her maternal grandfather.

They came to know of the incident yesterday.

Divyendu Sharma, who will be seen in the remake of light-hearted drama “Chashme Baddoor”, says working with David Dhawan is a big high for him and his co-stars.

Simple breath test could help detect stomach cancer

A quick and simple breath test can diagnose stomach cancer, a new study has revealed.

Scientists from Israel and China found the test was 90 percent accurate at detecting and distinguishing cancers from other stomach complaints in 130 patients.

According to the British Journal of Cancer, the test could revolutionise and speed up the way this cancer is diagnosed, the BBC reported.

About 7,000 UK people develop stomach cancer each year and most have an advanced stage of the disease.

US to allow small knives, bats, clubs on planes

Airline passengers will be able to carry small knives, souvenir baseball bats, golf clubs and other sports equipment onto planes beginning next month under a policy change announced by the head of the US Transportation Security Administration.

The new policy conforms US security standards to international standards, and allows TSA to concentrate its energies on more serious safety threats, the agency said in a statement yesterday.

Dilsuknagar blasts: Another victim dies, toll now at 17

Hyderabad blasts of two weeks ago is now 17, with the death late last night of 25-year-old Amrutha Ravi at the city’s Yashoda Hospital.

Ravi was brought to the hospital on February 21 from Dilsukhnagar, the site of the terror attack, by an auto rickshaw driver passing by. He was in critical condition and died close to midnight on Monday of a cardiac arrest.

On that Thursday evening, Ravi was out with friends at the busy marketplace that houses movie theatres and eateries, when the blasts happened a little after 7. His friend Rajshekhar died on the spot.

Mohamed Nasheed to appear in court today

Former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed, who was arrested by Maldivian police on Tuesday, will appear in the court today. The trial will be held at Hulhumale Magistrate Court at 4 pm.

According to the Maldivian government officials, Nasheed was arrested after a third warrant was issued against him on Tuesday for detaining Judge Abdulla Mohamed, chief judge of the Criminal Court, during his tenure as the president.

Nasheed was arrested and taken into police custody at 1.30 p.m. Tuesday, Minivan News quoted police spokesperson Hassan Haneef as saying.

Woman patient molested, police questions ward boy

A woman was allegedly molested by a ward boy at a state run hospital here following which the accused was questioned today, police said. The ward boy allegedly molested a women patient in the operation theatre yesterday, they said. A ward boy of the NRS hospital allegedly molested the woman patient when she was lying in the operation theatre last evening, Deputy Commissioner, Eastern-suburban division, Satyajit Bandopadhyay said today. “We have launched an investigation. We are questioning the ward boy. Nobody has been arrested yet,” he said. PTI

Indians living in constant fear, says Ravi Shankar

Attributing intoxication as the reason behind 90 per cent of crimes, spiritual guru Ravi Shankar on Tuesday said everyone in the country is living in fear.

“Everybody in the country – be it Hindus, Muslims or Dalits – all are living in constant fear. People are so apprehensive about their security. Ten years ago the situation in the country was not so,” said Ravi Shankar.

Addressing a gathering in the city, he urged youngsters to join politics and said tough laws alone cannot prevent crimes.

Court to hear Salman Khan’s plea today

A Mumbai sessions court on Wednesday will hear Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s plea against a lower court’s order to try him for culpable homicide and not amounting to murder in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

In his petition, the actor has called the magistrate’s order “bad in law” and “erroneous”. He was earlier being tried for rash and negligent driving.
