Create better environment to further ties: PM to Pak

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said the barbaric killing of Indian soldiers in Kashmir had cast a shadow on bilateral ties and asked Pakistan to create a conducive environment to take the normalisation process forward.

Singh also underlined that enhancement of bilateral cooperation and economic relations with Pakistan was in the mutual interest of the two countries.

“Incidents like the barbaric killing of two Indian soldiers on the Line of Control in January 2013 vitiate the atmosphere and cast a shadow on the bilateral dialogue process,” he said.

SC seeks explanation from Punjab, Bihar on police brutality

Taking strong exception of recent incidents of police beating protesting contractual teachers in Bihar and a girl in Tarn Taran in Punjab, the Supreme Court today sought explanation from the two states on the conduct of police personnel.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, a bench of justices G S Singhvi and Ranjana Prakash Desai directed the two state governments to respond on Monday on the allegations of police brutality.

Arun Jaitley, Karan Singh, Sharad Yadav best Parliamentarians

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley, Congress veteran Karan Singh and JD(U) chief Sharad Yadav have been selected for the ‘Outstanding Parliamentarian Award’, it was officially announced on Wednesday.

Jaitley, who is Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha, gets the award for the year 2010, Karan Singh for 2011 and Sharad Yadav for 2012.

Jaitley and Singh are members of the Upper House from Gujarat and Delhi, respectively, while Yadav is a Lok Sabha member from Madhepura, Bihar.

The Indian Parliamentary Group had instituted the award in 1994 which is conferred each year.

A 6-member Danish team led by Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Justice Ministry Jens Christian Bulow will hold talks with the Indian team headed by Special Secretary (Internal Secretary) in the Home Ministry S Jayaraman and explore options to bring back Davy to face trial in court in the 18 year-old case.

7 killed in Karachi violence

At least seven people were killed in separate incidents of violence in Pakistan’s biggest city and financial hub, while businesses were forced to close down across the city at gunpoint by unidentified gunmen.

Panic and fear spread across the metropolis as reports poured in of unidentified gunmen firing in many parts of the
city, forcefully closing down businesses and blocking roads.

Russia ratifies Afghan transit deal with Italy

The upper house of the Russian parliament, the Federation Council, has ratified an agreement with Italy on the railway transit of Italian personnel, arms, ammunition and military equipment to Afghanistan via Russian territory.

The agreement was signed in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in December 2010 and approved by the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, Feb 22, 2013.

Under the deal, Russia will issue multiple or single transit permits to Italy upon request.

Egypt court suspends elections called by Morsi

Egypt’s Administrative Court has overturned a presidential decree by Mohammed Morsi that called for general elections next month.

According to the Al-Ahram daily, the court said the law covering the polls needed to be reviewed by the Supreme Court to determine whether it conformed to the constitution.

Egypt’s Islamist president Mohammed Morsi had said the elections would begin April 22, and take place in four stages over two months.

The country remains deeply divided between Islamists and their liberal and secular opponents and the main opposition has boycotted the polls.

Ahmadinejad may attend Chavez’s funeral

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said he may attend the state funeral of late Venezuelan President Hugh Chavez to be held Friday.

Iran’s official IRNA news agency said Ahmadinejad made the remarks at a press conference in the capital Tehran after a meeting of his government.

He called Chavez “a dear friend of Iran”, “symbol of all the brave fighters and revolutionaries of Latin America” and “an anti-imperialist figurehead”.

Chavez died at the age of 58 after being ill with cancer for more than a year. He served as Venezuela’s president for 14 years.

Stop arms leakage, Moscow urges Libya

The Libyan authorities should do everything possible to stop the spread of Libyan weapons in the region and beyond, Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

Rebels in Libya, some of them from Islamist groups, ousted and killed long-standing leader Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011 after an uprising, in which they received assistance from NATO forces. Government arsenal across the country were looted during the conflict.

’33 Russian kids’ adoption still in limbo after US ban

The adoption of at least 33 children from orphanages in Russia’s St. Petersburg city are still in limbo two months after American families were barred from adopting Russian children, a top official said.

The 33 children, including 12 with special needs, had already met their American parents-to-be before the law came into force, city ombudswoman Svetlana Agapitova said.

It remains unclear whether all of those adoptions will now have to be cancelled, she said.

100 huts gutted in Mumbai slum blaze

Eight people sustained burn injuries and around 100 huts were reduced to ashes in a major fire that engulfed a slum near Bandra station in west Mumbai, officials said Thursday.

The fire which started around 2 a.m. quickly spread to adjoining slums in the congested Shastri Nagar slum colony, catching people unawares in their sleep, according to BMC Disaster Control room.

However, local youths immediately raised an alarm and helped evacuate the people and their belongings quickly to safe spots.

Russia invites US military chief for missile defence talks

Russia has invited US Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey to Moscow for talks that will include the missile defence issue, his Russian counterpart General Valery Gerasimov said.

“Missile defence will be one of the points of our discussion,” Gerasimov, chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, said at a meeting with foreign military attaches.

There was no comment on the proposed visit from the US.

NIA nabs Ajmer Sharif ‘bomber’

The NIA arrested one of the alleged 2007 Ajmer Sharif Dargah blast bombers, Bhavesh Patel, from Delhi on Tuesday. He will be produced before a special court in Jaipur on Wednesday.

Besides planting the bombs, Patel is also alleged to have provided logistical support to a saffron terror module for the execution of the blast. The explosion on October 11, 2007, had killed three people and injured 15 others.

In the wake of the coverage of the Hyderabad blasts, Press Council Chairman (PCI) Markandey Katju has appealed to the media to “exercise restraint in reporting cases of bomb blasts and terrorist cases,” and avoid doing anything which may “fan or promote communal hatred and animosity.”

Mumbai court asks Sadhvi Pragya to move Bhopal court for bail

The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act court today disposed of the application for temporary bail filed by Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, a key accused in the 2008 Malegoan blast case, saying she should approach a court in Bhopal instead. “The court said Sadhvi is presently in the custody of the Bhopal court, so she has to apply there,” said her lawyer, advocate Ganesh Sovani. Thakur had sought temporary release for performing the post-death rites of her father Chandra Pal Singh, who died in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday.

Fresh complaint filed in girl’s thrashing incident in Punjab

A fresh criminal complaint was today filed by the girl who was allegedly thrashed by policemen in full public view at Goindwal Road in the district. The girl has filed a fresh complaint, alleging that she and her father were being thrashed by two cops on last Sunday when she complained to them after being eve-teased by a truck driver and his accomplices, Inspector General Police (IG) of Border Range Amritsar R P Mittal said.

India to raise 30,000 troops for border with China

Working towards upgrading its military infrastructure along border with China, India will raise another 30,000 troops for the infantry battalions of its Army, Rajya Sabha was told today. “30 infantry battalions are proposed to be raised in the 13th Five year Plan towards enhancing combat capacity,” Defence Minister A K Antony said in reply to a written query. The Indian Army is planning to raise a Strike Corps for deployment along the China border which would mean raising of additional 90,000 troops for the force.

BCCI says police security charges for IPL very high

Terming the charges levied by police for security during IPL matches played at D Y Patil Stadium in neighbouring Navi Mumbai in 2010 as “excessively high”, the country’s premier cricket body BCCI has urged the Home Secretary of Maharashtra to fix reasonable rates, comparable to those charged by other states. BCCI has said this in a representation to Home Secretary dated March 4, following directive of Bombay High Court.
