Woman strangles her two children to death, kills self

A 23-year-old woman allegedly killed her two children before committing suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her residence in Mataur village in the district, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday night when Bindu strangulated her two kids – Rachit (5) and Radhika(6) to death after she had a heated argument with her husband Uttam Kumar and later committed suicide, they said.

Later, the bodies were recovered by the neighbours who informed the police about the same. Further probes are on into the case, they added.

A senior police official, who had visited Dr Rajesh Talwar’s house after the murder of Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj, on Wednesday deposed before a special CBI court in Ghaziabad.

The then SHO of Noida Sector-20, Dataram Nanoria told the court that when he reached the Talwar’s house he saw the body of Aarushi with cut marks on her neck.

CBI to begin probe into police official’s killing

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to begin a probe into the murder of Uttar Pradesh deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Zia-ul-Haq and two others Thursday, officials said.

The “request letter” by the state government reached the CBI office late Wednesday, following which an approval was sought from the department of personnel and training (DoPT), said an official who did not wish to be named.

Karnataka urban local body polls underway

Polling for 208 urban local bodies in Karnataka, the results of which will be seen as a referendum on the BJP’s corruption-scarred rule in the state, ahead of Assembly Elections due in May, began on Thursday amid tight security.

Counting of votes will be held on March 11.

The local bodies are spread across all 30 districts of the state.

Taliban militants kill 16 Afghan soldiers

Anti-government militants ambushed and killed over a dozen soldiers of the national army in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, 315 km northeast of Kabul, a local official confirmed on Wednesday.

“The militants raided a convoy of the national army in Wardoj district on Monday leaving 16 soldiers dead and captured seven others,” District Governor Dawlat Mohammad told Xinhua.

Those involved in the deadly ambush, included Taliban insurgents, militants loyal to the radical Islamic party the Hizb-e-Islami and drug traffickers, he said.

Union Cabinet to take up Anti-Rape Law Bill today

A person in authority convicted of rape will have to spend rest of his natural life in jail, according to a proposal in the Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, which is likely to be taken up by the Union Cabinet on Thursday.

The fresh Bill will replace the ordinance on crimes against women promulgated last month.

The proposal will replace the provision in the ordinance which has subscribed life imprisonment as the maximum punishment for those in authority committing rape.

Pope Benedict XVI’s gold papal ring, the symbol of his power used to officially seal documents and ensure their authenticity, has been cancelled, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said.

Known as the Fisherman’s Ring, it was due to be destroyed with a special silver hammer after Benedict’s resignation Feb 28, symbolising the end of his authority.

Italian man shoots two women dead, kills self

A pistol-wielding bankrupt man stormed into a government office in central Italy’s Perugia city and singled out two women employees who he shot dead before committing suicide.

The 43-year-old man was identified as Andrea Zampi. His family owns a small training company in Perugia.

The man entered the government office building brandishing a pistol, and shouted, “You’ve ruined me, you’ve ruined me”, to workers before firing a shot in the air.

Deadly, drug-resistant bacteria spreading in US

Deadly infections from bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics are on the rise in the US, and hospitals and health care workers must take immediate action to protect patients, doctors at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said.

“Our strongest antibiotics don’t work and patients are left with potentially untreatable infections,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden.

“Doctors, hospital leaders, and public health must work together now to implement CDC’s ‘detect and protect’ strategy and stop these infections from spreading.”

Shiv Sena threatens to disrupt UPSC exams

Shiv Sena workers on Wednesday staged a protest against the new exam pattern introduced by the Union Public Service Commission and warned, it would disrupt the Commission’s exams in the state if its demand to include Marathi in the syllabus was not met.

“Our demand is that students should have the option of Marathi in the exam. If our demand is not met, we will disrupt UPSC exams in the state,” Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar said.
