Organisers of the US delegation to India that met Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had canvassed for participants in the trip at prices ranging from $3,000 to $16,000, said a media report. The business delegation included four US members of the House of Representatives, all Republicans. The organisers had canvassed in the Indian American community for participants in the trip, according to a report published in Hi India, a South Asian newspaper from Chicago.

Sri Lanka police stand by as Buddhist extremists attack Muslim-owned store

An angry mob of hundreds of people, led by Buddhist monks, attacked a warehouse belonging to a Muslim-owned clothing chain in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo on Thursday. This comes as Buddhist hardliners ramp up their campaigns against Muslims’ lifestyles.

The scene was eerily reminiscent of attacks on Muslim-owned stores throughout the past week in Burma. One video shows a monk throwing a rock at a security camera in front of the warehouse, as policemen look on and the mob erupts into cheers.

Development work in Narendra Modi’s Gujarat done with central funds: Kapil Sibal

In a veiled criticism of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Kapil Sibal on Friday said development works in the state were being implemented using central funds and he had not done “anything significant”.

Without taking Modi’s name, the Telecom Minister said somebody wins thrice in his state and thinks he is a contender for the post of Prime Minister.

Hazare meets Kejriwal, asks him to call off fast

Anna Hazare tonight visited Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal at his indefinite fast site here and urged him to call off his fast citing his deteriorating health.

The meeting between Hazare and Kejriwal took place at around 10:50 PM.

This is the first time that both Hazare and Kejriwal came on a common platform since they parted ways in September last year. Kejriwal had, however, called on Hazare a number of times after the September 19 split.

The fast of Kejriwal against “inflated” power bills has entered the seventh day today at Sunder Nagri in north-east Delhi.

Steve Waugh wants female players in men-only Twenty20

Former Australia captain Steve Waugh has advocated the presence of least one female player in each team in the men-only Big Bash Twenty20 (T20) League.

Waugh, though, said the idea might seem to some as “out there”.

“I think it’s about time where we could have one woman player per Big Bash side. Going forward, I can’t see why the girls can’t have representation in the Big Bash,” Waugh said.

Minor girl raped in Odisha

A seven-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her uncle near Paradip in the the state, police said today.

The incident took place at Taradapada village in Jagatsinghpur Police Station yesterday. The accused Sibacharan
Das was arrested and forwarded to judicial custody, the police said.

The minor girl was lured to a secluded place and raped there by her uncle during Holi, Sibaji Mohanty,
inspector-in-charge (IIC) of Jagatsinghpur police station, said.

Transit police in Philadelphia are calling a local man a hero for jumping on to subway tracks to help a man who fell off the platform.

Christopher Knafelc, 32, was yesterday afternoon waiting for a train in north Philadelphia when he saw a man walk off the platform and fall on the tracks. He jumped down to help the man, knowing that a train would be arriving in a few minutes.

Two women constables hit by speeding car, injured

Two women constables riding a scooty were injured after they were hit by a speeding car, police said.

Saloni and Reetu were on way to SSP office on the scooty this morning when they were hit by the car, a police official said

Both the constables were rushed to a private hospital and are undergoing treatment, he said adding that the car driver had fled away from the spot.

Senior Superintendent of Police Shiv Shankar Yadav visited the injured constables at the hospital.

Man kills infant daughters

A man crushed his two little daughters to death after a quarrel with his wife at Gonabana village in Garwah district today, police said.

The accused Ramnandan Goswami was arrested, officer-in-charge of Meral Police station Jai Shankar Singh
said.

Goswami returned home in a drunken state last night and had quarrelled with his wife who complained his of having
an illicit relation with his sister-in-law.

Goswami again quarrelled with his wife this afternoon and picked up eight-month-old and two-year-old daughters and
crushed them on the ground, police said.

Stephen Baldwin admits he failed to pay NY taxes

Stephen Baldwin has admitted in court that he failed to pay New York state income taxes for three years.

The actor agreed today to pay USD 400,000 in back taxes, interest and penalties. The judge says USD 100,000 of that already has been paid.

Baldwin pleaded guilty to a charge of repeated failure to file income taxes.

The judge says that if Baldwin pays back the rest of the money within a year, the charge will be taken off his record.

If not, he’ll be sentenced to five year’s probation.

Baldwin went to court between appearances on ‘All-Star Celebrity Apprentic’.

Maoist arrested in Jharkhand

A Maoist cadre allegedly involved in the attack on Jharkhand’s former Speaker Inder Singh Namdhari was arrested today, police said.

DSP Jagdish Prasad told reporters that Phillip Soni alias Masinji was arrested from Gondgada village in Ranka police station of Garwah district.

Seven cases including the attack on Namdhari was pending against him, Prasad said.

Namdhari, a Member of Parliament, was attacked at Garu in Latehar district in 2011.

Man arrested for supplying heroin to jail inmate

One person was arrested today for supplying heroin to an inmate at the jail here in West Midnapore district.

The police said the man called Sisir was arrested when he was caught by the warden when handing over heroin to Binod
Bihari Yadav, a man convicted for life in prison here.

A deputy chief ticket inspector was today arrested for allegedly making sexual advances towards a woman software professional on the Chennai-Ahmedabad Navjeevan Express in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.

Government Railway Police sources said E Jaya Gopi, the accused, was drunk at the time.

He took the woman to an AC compartment on the pretext of collecting the fare difference, and allegedly made a pass at
her.

She shouted for help and other passengers came to her rescue.

US-based Indian designs garbage disposal system for India

A US-based Indian engineer has designed and patented three waste disposal units that “match architecture and road systems” of India.

“We have got narrow streets and alleys. Our disposal system should match the architecture and road systems. It is only partly happening,” Ganga Narayan Ghosh told IANS on the sidelines of a media conference here Thursday.

“I have studied the system for over 30 years and have designed and patented three containers that can be used effectively and at a low cost in India,” he added.
