The government Wednesday proposed a JPC probe into the AgustaWestland VVIP helicopter deal, with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath moving a motion on this in the Rajya Sabha. The BJP, however, rejected the move.

Vivekananda a big inspiration, says Jayalalithaa

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Wednesday said Swami Vivekananda was her big inspiration and she has undertaken “political sanyas” to serve the people.

“As a saint, Vivekananda served the people. In his path, I have undertaken political ‘thuravaram/sanyas’ and serving the people. I do not have any self-interest. I don’t want anything. I don’t have anybody,” she said, inaugurating the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Swami Vivekananda here.

Gunmen kill Pakistani journalist

Unidentified gunmen shot dead a journalist in Pakistan’s restive tribal region Wednesday, local media reported.

Malik Mumtaz was working for Geo Television and Jang group of newspapers in North Waziristan tribal region. He was also filing reports for Pashto-language Khyber television, Xinhua reported, quoting a report.

Mumtaz was returning home when the gunmen fired at his vehicle, killing him on the spot, Geo TV said.

TV anchor Hamid Mir said that he had been receiving threats.

No group claimed responsibility yet and the family said they did not have personal enmity with anyone.

Police oppose CBI probe into constable Tomar’s death

Delhi Police Wednesday opposed a plea in the Delhi High Court seeking a CBI probe into the death of a constable who collapsed while controlling anti-rape protests here last year.

Additional Solicitor General Sidharth Luthra, appearing for the police, told the court that investigation was pending in the case and a third party (petitioner) could not be allowed in the case.

Ramdev slams Sonia Gandhi over land lease

Yoga guru Baba Ramdev Wednesday accused Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for working against his herbal centre project in Himachal Pradesh here and alleged that a lease of land to his Patanjali Yogpeeth was revoked on her direction.

“Sonia Gandhi was responsible for cancelling the land lease which was given to me to set up a herbal centre. The state government took action on the direction of Delhi while people of this hill state never wanted to do so,” he said at a public meeting here.

Government admits problems over Aadhaar cards

The government admitted Wednesday that a large number of Aadhaar cards had not been delivered by post offices.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla said in the Lok Sabha: “Complaints of a large number of Aadhaar letters not delivered from post offices have been received.”

He said the government had taken various measures and also instructed all the postal circles in the country to ensure their “smooth and timely delivery”.

The minister also admitted to problems because the Aadhaar portal had earlier a capacity constraint.

Air India staff move court against management

The Kerala High Court Wednesday said it would hear a petition by an Air India employees’ union against changes in the working conditions.

Petitioner Aviation Industry Employees Guild, Kerala region, sought issuing of court notice to the central government and the airline over the issue.

The petition complained about alleged arbitrary and illegal action of the airline management in changing working conditions and handing over ground handling activities at Thiruvananthapuram airport to a joint venture company.

India has fewer poor now

The government said Wednesday that the number of people below poverty line (BPL) dropped from 4,072.2 lakh in 2004-05 to 3,546.8 lakh in 2009-10.

Minister of State for Planning Rajeev Shukla told the Lok Sabha that the latest figures were not available.

In some states, however, the numbers in BPL category rose, Shukla said in a written statement.

These included Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgah, Delhi, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh.

10-year-old-girl allegedly raped and murdered

A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Guhiapal village, about 90 km from here, in Ghatsila sub-division of East Singhbhum district.

The girl, a student of class II, went missing since last afternoon and the body was recovered from an irrigation well
beside the river Swarnarekha, Superintendent of Police (rural), Rajiv Ranjan, said.

Prima facie, it appeared that the girl was raped before murder by unidentified miscreant even though she resisted the
move, the SP said adding that it would be confirmed after post-mortem.

Action taken in Palghar `facebook arrest’ case: Govt tells HC

Maharashtra Government today informed the Bombay High Court that it suspended two senior police officers over the arrest of two girls from neighbouring Palghar for protesting on facebook the shut-down in Mumbai on the day of Bal Thackeray’s funeral last November.

The affidavit filed by the government says that Superintendent of Police, Thane (Rural) Ravindra Sengaonkar
and Senior Inspector of Palghar Police Station Srikant Pingale have been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been ordered.

The action followed a report of Inspector General of Police who conducted a probe.

Women who eat an iron-rich diet were 30 to 40 percent less likely to develop pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) than those who consumed less, a new study shows.

US labels Pak-based Mullah Nazir’s militant group ‘Global Terrorists’

The US State Department has designated the Commander Nazir Group and its leader Malang Wazir as ‘ Specially Designated Global Terrorists’.

In a statement, the State Department said the Nazir Group has run training camps for terrorists, dispatched suicide bombers, provided sanctuary for al Qaeda fighters and conducted cross-border operations against the US and its allies in Afghanistan, reports The Express Tribune.

The statement further said the Nazir group is also responsible for assassinations and intimidation operations against civilians in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

No SC order banning Indian channels: Pak minister

Pakistan’s media regulatory body has not received any orders from the Supreme Court regarding a ban on licensing of Indian Satellite TV channels, a senior minister informed the Parliament Wednesday.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira while replying to a question in the Upper House said it is true that some content of Indian channels being aired by private TV channels do not correspond to Islamic principles and values but same is the case of some content even on international news channels.

4 Strips egg noodles
6 Spring onions
3 Eggs
1 Garlic clove
200 gm Baby corn
1 Cup beans
2 tbsp Oil
1 tbsp Soy sauce
1tbsp Vinegar

How to make Egg Chow Mein

Keep the noodles in hot water for 5-7 minutes and then drain the water.
Now cook the noodles in salted water.
Leave them to dry.
Beat the eggs and cook them till they get scrambled.
Heat oil and fry onions, beans and then add noodles to it.
Stir fry the contents for 2 minutes.
Now add soy sauce, salt and vinegar and stir fry again for 5 minutes.

Gut microbes help regulate blood pressure

A new study has suggested that gut bacteria are an integral part of the body`s complex system for maintaining a stable blood pressure.

Using mice models, researchers at The Johns Hopkins University and Yale University have discovered that a specialized receptor, normally found in the nose, is also in blood vessels throughout the body, sensing small molecules created by microbes that line mammalian intestines, and responding to these molecules by increasing blood pressure.

A new research has demonstrated how the signaling pathway of insulin and insulin like peptides plays a critical role in helping to regulate learning and memory.

How to make

Mix Paneer balls with corn flour fry it in a kadai till it become brown.
In a separate kadai, fry onions till brown.
Cut green chilli into small pieces and add it to fried onion.

Scientists are using memristors- electronic microcomponents that imitate natural nerves- as key components in a blueprint for an artificial brain.

Scientists have long been dreaming about building a computer that would work like a brain. This is because a brain is far more energy-saving than a computer, it can learn by itself, and it doesn`t need any programming.

Dr. Andy Thomas from Bielefeld University`s Faculty of Physics and his colleagues constructed a memristor that is capable of learning a year ago.

J&K Police Bill objectionable, draconian: CPI(M)

The Jammu and Kashmir state unit of CPI(M) today termed the proposed Police Bill as “highly objectionable and draconian”, saying the administration needs to come out of the “authoritarian mindset”.

“The proposed Police Reforms Bill is highly objectionable. There are some clauses in the draft bill which make it draconian and which are unacceptable to the people of the state,” state secretary, CPI(M), M Y Tarigami told reporters here.

Tarigami said there is a need to democratise the institutions of governance rather than make them more “authoritarian”.
