Police seize suspected petrol bombs

Police seized two bottles filled with petrol connected with a wick which was kept in Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus that arrived at Somwarpet near here today. The bus was proceeding from Harihara in Davanagere district towards Madikeri, police sources told PTI. During its stop over at Somwarpet, the conductor of the bus found two bottles filled with petrol which were connected to a wick, which he threw away. Police suspect it to be “some mischief by miscreants”. Superintendent of Police Ajitej rushed to the spot and ordered an inquiry into the incident. PTI

Newly-wed bride commits suicide

A newly-wed bride today allegedly committed suicide in Karnaprayag area of Chamoli district by hanging herself from a tree near her in-laws\’ place. The body of 23-year-old Manju was found hanging from the tree by the residents of Dua village, officials said. The reason why the girl took the extreme step is being found out, they said. She was married to one Subhash Singh of the village only three months ago. PTI

Police asked to file report on Honey Singh’s ‘obscene’ lyrics

A judicial magistrate court here has directed the police to inquire into the alleged obscene lyrics of Punjabi rapper Honey Singh and asked them to file a report by April 4. Judicial Magistrate (JMIC) Hitesh Garg asked Station House Officer of Baldev Nagar to inquire into the alleged obscene lyrics used by Singh in his songs and file the report to the court by April 4. Sanjay Khera, a local resident, had filed a complaint under sections of IPC related to obscenity offences on January 3 against Singh demanding ban on his music albums.

NIA team in Kolkata for investigating Hyderabad blasts

A team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and personnel of the Andhra Pradesh intelligence bureau investigating the Hyderabad blasts arrived here today. “A team of NIA and SIB (Hyderabad) arrived here this morning,” a senior police official told PTI on condition of anonymity. With investigators trying to put together pieces of evidence, nearly 40 people have been questioned by the police and central probe agencies, for the blasts in Hyderabad that left 16 dead on February 21. Sri Lanka objects to UN Human Rights Council resolution

Sri Lanka today stoutly opposed a US sponsored resolution coming up against the country at the ongoing UN Human Rights Council, terming it as “unfair and unjust”. Addressing the UN rights sessions in Geneva, Sri Lanka’s Human Rights Envoy and Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said the international community had fallen prey to a vicious disinformation campaign run by the LTTE remnants now domiciled in Western nations.

BJP leader files corruption complaint against Maha Minister

BJP National Secretary Kirit Somaiya today filed a complaint with the Anti-corruption Bureau (ACB) here demanding an FIR against Maharashtra Minister Bhaskar Jadhav, days after he came under scanner for the lavish wedding of his children at Chiplun in Ratnagiri district. “Jadhav has abused his power, indulged in corrupt practices and he should be booked under relevant sections of Prevention of Corruption Act,” Somaiya demanded after filing a written criminal complaint at Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) office here. Jadhav is the Minister of State for Urban Development and Forests.

Centre promises adequate steps for rehab of Assam violence

Asserting that the Centre is sensitive towards people in Assam, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde today promised adequate steps to rehabilitate 10,000 persons staying in relief camps following violence in Goalpara district during recent panchayat elections. The present situation in Goalpara district, where 14 people died in violence and seven others in ethic clashes, is under control, he said in the Rajya Sabha. “We are very sensitive to the Assam people…They are Indians….Please do not make politics out of it,” Shinde said responding to queries on the situation of Goalpara district.

Mend ways or face consequences: Ajit Pawar to MNS

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar today asked Raj Thackeray-led MNS to mend ways and desist from the smear campaign against NCP or face a “befitting reply”. “Some people are trying to defame NCP. Sixty-year-old man sentenced for life for murdering his wife

A 60–year-old man found guilty of murdering his wife was sentenced to life imprisonment by the sessions court here on Wednesday. According to a press release issdued by the office of the Superintendent of Police here, the incident dates back to June 26, 2012, when the accused Sudhakar Vithoba Misalwar (60), a resident of Tohgaon village in Pombhurna tehsil of the district had an altercation with his wife Mayabai Sudhakar Misalwar (50) over some domestic issue at about 6.30 pm.

Ramdev holds rally, expresses resolve to fight for land

Keeping his date with followers, yoga teacher Ramdev today held a rally at Solan and said he will fight the legal battle to get back possession of the land given to his trust by the previous BJP government. In spite of the controversy surrounding the cancellation of land lease, the yoga teacher went ahead with his scheduled visit and addressed a rally here. On February 19, the state government had cancelled lease of the land. And on February 22, the Himachal authorities, in a swift but peaceful move, took over the land given to the Ramdev’s trust Patanjali Yogpeeth.

Guj Assembly passes new irrigation bill amid Congress walk-out

The Gujarat Assembly today passed the new Irrigation and Drainage Bill 2013 making it mandatory for farmers to get licence to draw underground water exceeding proscribed depths and penal action against errant farmers, with a majority voice vote amid opposition Congress staging a walk out in protest. The Gujarat Irrigation and Drainage Bill, 2013, which was introduced in the State Assembly yesterday seek to replace and repeal the existing Gujarat Irrigation Act 1879.

Ishrat case: Court to decide CBI plea against denial of remand

The Special CBI Court will decide on March 1 whether to set aside the order of the judicia magistrate denying custody of two senior Gujarat police officers to CBI in the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate H S Khutwad, last Friday, denied CBI a remand of Superintendent of Police Girish Singhal, the first Gujarat police officer to be arrested in the case by CBI. While Singhal was arrested on Thursday, retired DSP J G Parmar was arrested on Friday. But additional senior civil judge also denied CBI Parmar’s custody the next day.

Man with fake passport held at city airport

A 35-year-old man was arrested for allegedly carrying a fake passport after he landed at the NSC Bose International Airport here in a flight from Dubai, the police said. During checking of papers, it was found that Hanif Mian was carrying an Indian passport, but his address given there was in Bangladesh. The police suspected that the man was actually a Bangladeshi. Suspended woman constable attempts suicide in Maha Legislature

A suspended woman constable, who had alleged sexual harassment by her seniors, today attempted suicide in the premises of Maharashtra Legislature. Police said the condition of 25-year-old Amrita Akolekar was stable and she was recovering in the hospital. Aurangabad-based Akolekar, who had earlier alleged that she was sexually harassed by three assistant commissioners of police, consumed pesticide in the Legislature premises. She reportedly came to meet Home Minister R R Patil. Police are trying to find out what prompted her to attempt suicide.

Girl dies after being hit by vehicle in Dy Speaker’s cavalcade

A 21-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a vehicle in the cavalcade of Deputy Speaker of Chhattisgarh Assembly Narayan Chandel here today. “Madhu Jain, a CA final exam student, died on the spot, when she was knocked down by the pilot vehicle Bolero (CG-04 TA 0677) in the cavalcade of Deputy Speaker in Shankar Nagar,” City Superintendent of Police Manisha Thakur told PTI. “The incident happened when Madhu was allegedly trying to overtake a car on her two-wheeler and collided head-on with the pilot vehicle coming from opposite direction from SRP chowk.

Security beefed up in temple in wake of Hyd blasts

Tight security arrangements have been introduced at the famous Ramanathaswamy temple and at various points in this island town following the February 21 twin blasts in Hyderabad, police said. Superintendent of Police Mayil Vahanan said a battallion of Tamil Nadu Special Police would be deployed to take care of security from the Pamban palam upto this temple. Apart from Closed Circuit TVs, policemen in uniform and plainclothes would keep close watch. Shops in the temple had been advised not to sell electronic items, he said.

Man acquitted following daughter’s testimony

A man accused of killing the wife was today acquitted by a court following the deposition by his seven-year-old disabled daughter that her mother was killed by her paramour. According to Tilak Nagar police, Shiraj Shaikh killed his wife Shehnaz in December 2010 as he suspected that she had an extramarital affair. Shaikh was subsequently arrested. The prosecution had initially included the daughter’s name in the list of its witnesses but later it was dropped. However, defence lawyer Abdul Wahab Khan called the minor girl as a defence witness.

Ishrat encounter case: Fifth Gujarat cop arrested

The CBI arrested one more Gujarat policeman in connection with the alleged fake encounter killing of Mumbai teenager Ishrat Jahan and three others by Ahmedabad Crime Branch in 2004. Anaju Chaudhary, a commando with State Reserve Police Force, was arrested here late last night, making him the fifth policeman to be taken into custody in the nine-year-old case.

Man arrested over planting of bomb like object in train

A man was arrested by CID wing of police from Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu today in connection with planting a bomb like object in an unreserved compartment of Dadar-Puducherry Chalukya Express train here on January 8. CID Superintendent of Police Ravindran said a team rushed to Tiruchirapalli on information that Shankar, arrested in a cheating case in that city, had admitted during questioning to having planted the object in the compartment. The man was later brought here and remanded to five days custody.

Hyd twin blasts probe moving in positive direction: Police

The Hyderabad police which is probing the twin bomb blasts case at Dilshuknagar area today said the investigations were moving in a positive direction but refused to give a time frame for any arrests. “Right now, there is nothing concrete we can say that we have. We are following certain leads. We are going forward. But definitely the investigation is moving in a positive direction,” Hyderabad city police commissioner Anurag Sharma told PTI. “All I can say that we are doing our best efforts and giving a time frame at this moment is not possible,” he added.

Police to seek remand of accused involved in jail break bid

The Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) today took into custody five serial blasts case accused, allegedly involved in an unsuccessful jail-break attempt, and will produce them in the court tomorrow, seeking their remand for interrogation. “We have arrested (taken into custody from jail) five of the 14 accused involved in the unsuccessful jailbreak attempt at Sabarmati Jail today,” Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) (Crime) A K Sharma said.

Three get death sentence for murder

A local court in Chhattisgarh today convicted and awarded death sentence to three men for murdering a couple and their servant by triggering a bomb blast in 2010 owing to political rivalry with one of the victims. “Additional district judge Abdul Zahid Kureshi awarded death penalty to Govind Chandra, Omprakash Chandra and Ganesh Chandra for killing three persons by triggering a bomb blast in Jogidipa village under Bhilaigarh area in Balodabazar district”, Public Prosecutor Sanjay Tiwari told PTI.

YSR’s brother-in-law in police custody in forgery case

Former Kadapa Mayor P Ravindranatha Reddy, arrested in a forgery and cheating case, was today sent in one day police custody. Ravindranatha Reddy, brother-in-law of former Chief Minister late Y S Rajashekar Reddy, yesterday surrendered before Additional Judicial Magistrate First Class, who sent him in judicial remand for 14 days. Soon after the surrender, police filed an application seeking Ravindranatha Reddy’s custody for interrogation. Hearing the plea today, Judicial Magistrate Rajiv allowed the police to take his custody for one day – from 10 AM on Thursday to 10 AM the next day.
