Low intensity earthquake hits Angul district

An earthquake of low intensity with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale occurred in Angul district of Odisha today.

The earthquake with its epicentre at latitude 20.7 degree north and longitude 85.1 degree east was recorded at 10.45 AM, a meteorological department spokesperson here said.

No damage to property or harm to any person was reported, official sources said.

Activists seek information about missing 30-year-old woman

Several women activists along with the kin of a 30-year old woman, who allegedly went missing after she left home to meet the police in Sibsagar district, today demanded that the police disclose information about her whereabouts.

Majoni Das, a woman activist, teacher, writer from Sibsagar, has gone missing since February 10, after police had
summoned her to the office of Sibsagar Superintendent of Police, Bondita Acharya, spokesperson of Women in Governance told reporters here today.

UIDAI orders probe into duplication of Aadhaar numbers

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has directed inquiry into complaints of alleged duplication of Aadhaar numbers.

“The contact centre of UIDAI had received two complaints dated July 25, 2012 and July 31, 2012 regarding duplication of Aadhaar. The complaints were forwarded to the respective authorities for taking necessary action. Since it is related to some other residents it cannot be shared,” the UIDAI said in reply to an RTI query.

Ruckus in UP Assembly over power crisis

The Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday witnessed noisy scenes over the issue of power crisis which even led to the House being adjourned for a while as opposition members alleged that the Samajwadi Party government was not serious about the fixing the problem.

FIFA confirms use of ‘goal-line technology’ in 2014 Brazil World Cup

FIFA has announced that the much-hyped goal-line technology (GLT) will be used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and added that the technology may be introduced in the Premier League as well next season. Confirming that the GLT will also be used at this year’s FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, the football body said that the GLT has been aimed to support match officials and to install a system in stadiums and pre-match referee tests, the Telegraph reports.

An Associate Professor of Maharaja Sayajirao University has been suspended following his arrest. He had reportedly daubed the chair of the Vice Chancellor with an itching powder. This was done during an important seminar.

The act resulted in a major discomfort for the MSU Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh. He had to leave the stage in the middle of the UGC sponsored national seminar. According to police the accused Prof. Ghanshyam Solanki, who is the Head of Department of Commerce and Mercantile Law was responsible for the mischief.

HTC says it ‘reinvents smartphone’ with new Android-powered handset

Taiwan-based mobile maker HTC has announced its latest flagship Android phone -the HTC One.

Mike Woodward, President of HTC America said that they think ‘it”s time to shake things up in the smartphone space.’

The firm has decided to come out and reinvent the smartphone, he added.

According to Woodward, the One is a complete shift for the industry, built around how people use their phones now, ABC News reports.

The report said that HTC”s Android phones have always been known for their top-of-the-line hardware parts and the One is no different.

A social worker Syed Habeeb told that instead of thinking about other alternatives to compensate the surcharge, government is laying the burden on consumers’ shoulder.

Woman IT employee jumps from auto

A 22-year-old software engineer was injured when she jumped out of a moving autorickshaw here after a man tried to molest her, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place Tuesday night in Hitec City. The woman suffered head injuries.

The woman told her friends that she boarded a sharing autorickshaw after visiting a beauty parlour and was returning home.

As other passengers got off at their destinations, a man seated with her allegedly tried to hold her while the autorickshaw driver diverted the vehicle. She then panicked and jumped out of the auto.

Minority budget nothing but juggling of figures

TDP state secretary Mr. Younus Ikbani told that the minority budget presented by the Congress government is only on paper and not in practice. This is just juggling of figures. Congress government has not taken any concrete measures to remove educational and economic backwardness of Muslims.

SC extends stay on execution of Veerappan aides

Hanging of four aides of sandalwood smuggler Veerappan has been further delayed with the Supreme Court on Wednesday extending its interim order staying the execution of death sentence imposed on them for killing 22 police personnel in a landmine blast in Karnataka in 1993.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Altamas Kabir said it was keeping the matter pending since another bench, which has heard an identical plea, has reserved its judgement.

Strike turns violent in UP, vehicles set on fire in Noida

The two-day nationwide strike called by Central trade unions disrupted normal life in many states on Wednesday leaving commuters in the lurch.

Violence erupted in some places on the first day of a two-day strike as workers, angry about high fuel prices in particular, tried to keep vehicles off the roads.

The strike turned violent in Noida in Uttar Pradesh, adjoining Delhi, after angry workers protested in Noida Phase II. They pelted stones at some factories and burnt vehicles, including a fire engine. The police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the restive crowd.

Balaiah calls on Naidu

Strike hits banking, coal mining in Andhra

Banking services were paralysed, coal production came to a halt, and transportation was hit in Andhra Pradesh by the two-day nation-wide strike called by major trade unions, which began Wednesday.

Bank services in Hyderabad and the rest of the state were totally paralysed as over 70,000 employees of public sector banks joined the strike.

TRS MLAs meet Home Minister

Slight intensity quake at Indo-Bangla border

A slight intensity earthquake hit parts of West Bengal in the early hours on Wednesday.

Meteorological Department sources said the quake with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter Scale was felt at 2.35 AM with its epicentre on the India-Bangladesh border.

Although the tremor was felt in a number of districts in north Bengal, there were no report of any damage, they said.
