China arrests 5 Tibetans for ‘inciting’ immolation

Chinese authorities have arrested five Tibetans, mostly Buddhist monks, for persuading three people to set themselves on fire.

The five Tibetans were arrested by police in northwestern Gansu province and included a 21-year-old monk from neighboring Sichuan.

According to the official Xinhua News Agency, three of the other Tibetans were identified as local monks.

Almaty talks with Iran were useful: US

The US has said that recent talks with Iran and UN security council’s five permanent members (P5) plus Germany on confidence-building measures in Almaty were ‘useful’.

“The just concluded P5 plus 1 (representing five permanent members of the UN Security Council US, Britain, Russia, China and France plus Germany) talks with Iran were useful,” State Department spokesperson Patrick Ventrell said to mediapersons yesterday.

“But, now it is up to Tehran to respond to the concrete confidence building measures proposed by them,” the spokesperson added.

Hagel committed to strong India-US ties: Pentagon

As Chuck Hagel took over as Barack Obama’s new defence secretary amid a controversy over his comments on India’s role in Afghanistan, Pentagon – the US defence department headquarters – said that Hagel will work to strengthen ties to India.

Hagel’s strong commitment to fostering a close defence relationship was reported Wednesday by Washington Free Beacon, the rightwing online newspaper that had disclosed a video-recording of a speech Hagel made in 2011 about Indian aid to Afghanistan.

‘Iran expanding a sensitive Iranian military site’

New satellite pictures have confirmed that Iran has continued to expand a sensitive military site to conduct experiments relevant to developing a nuclear weapon.

For the last eight years, international inspectors have been excluded from the Parchin military complex, where Iran is believed to have tested rockets and explosives.

In particular, Iran is accused of using Parchin to experiment with detonators inside an “explosives containment vessel”.

According to the Telegraph, a picture, taken last October, shows a cluster of three new buildings near the entrance to a tunnel.

NAC member says Survey ‘wanting’ in social securit

Finding the Economic Survey “wanting” in its social security commitment for unorganised workers, NAC member Aruna Roy on Wednesday said it did not specify how the government intends to attend the issue.

The Survey is highly wanting when it comes to the commitment of social security for unorganized workers, Roy said in a statement.

“It assumes that government?s commitment stops with merely listing out all the major programmes such as Aam Admi Bima Yojana, the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, the Unorganized Workers Social Security Act 2008 and the National Social Security Fund.

Actor Akash Bhathija, seen in the new show “Amita Ka Amit”, says he enjoys playing negative characters as they stand out more.

“Since I have begun acting, I always wanted to play a negative character. The shade stands out more than any other character. It gives me joy and pleasure to act something which I am not,” Akash told IANS.

Last seen on the big screen in “Ishaqzaade”, the actor was also a part of the movie “Isi Life Mein”. He said he likes to experiment with his roles.

Dead body found
(Siasat News): Dundigal police has found the dead body of a man who was mysteriously missing.

As per the details, B Sandeep, 20, resident of Jagatgirigutta, was mysteriously missing from his residence since February 22. A complaint was lodged with the police on February 25.

However, police found the dead body near Katta Maisamma. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.

Install CCTV cameras on National Highways: HC

The Bombay High Court has asked the Maharashtra Government to install CCTV cameras at all the lamp posts on National Highways across the state to detect over-speeding of vehicles and avoid accidents.

The suggestion came from a bench headed by Justice Ajay Khanwilkar yesterday on a PIL praying for a direction to the state to ensure medical help to the victims within one hour of sustaining injuries in accidents on the Highways.

Man shot at outside court premises

A person was shot at by two unknown persons outside a civil court, police said here.

Ajendra Kumar Jatav was shot outside the civil court premises last evening when he was going to consult a lawyer in connection with a case related to his brother Manoj, they said.

Manoj has been booked in a murder case.

Jatav was rushed to the district hospital where he was stated to be critical.

Superintendent of Police Shrikant Singh said that the incident appeared to be a result of old enmity.

Chidambaram presents national budget, says no need for gloom

Amid high expectations of reversing the sharp slowdown in the country’s growth, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram presented India’s 82nd budget in the Lok Sabha Thursday, saying that challenges remained but there was no need for gloom.

The finance minister began his speech by seeking the support all stakeholders in helping navigate the Indian economy through the current crisis. He said getting back to high growth rates of over 8-9 percent seen some years ago was the main challenge.

Two unidentified men abduct, rape a 5-year-old girl

A five-year-old girl was abducted and raped by two unidentified men in New Delhi, police said Wednesday.

The incident was reported from east Delhi’s New Seemapuri area on Tuesday afternoon. “The girl was playing outside her home when two unidentified men abducted her. They took her to an isolated place and raped her,” said a police officer.

Over 360 mn people suffering hearing loss: WHO

A World Health Organisation (WHO) report has said there are an estimated 360 million people in the world who are suffering from hearing loss.

In the report prepared for International Ear Care Day (March 3), WHO said one in three people over the age of 65, or a total of 165 million people worldwide, live with hearing loss, and another 32 million affected by hearing loss are children aged under 15.

Germany is hit by a new food scandal as authorities struggled to restore consumers’ confidence in meat products shattered by the recent discovery of horse meat in thousands of ready meals sold across Europe labelled as beef.

Prosecutors in the north German city of Oldenburg said they are investigating allegations that more than 150 poultry farms in the state of Lower Saxony have defrauded consumers by marketing millions of mass-produced eggs as products of free-range or organic farming.

Pak court dismisses petition against President Zardari

A Pakistani court has dismissed a petition seeking an order to bar Asif Ali Zardari functioning as the President.

Jamaat-e-Islami leader Farid Piracha had filed the petition in the Lahore High Court that contended Zardari had been disqualified in the light of a recent Supreme Court judgment that bars the President from engaging in political activities.

Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh yesterday observed that the order sought by Piracha could not be granted as another petition on the same issue is pending adjudication and its maintainability had not been decided as yet.

Woman teacher commits suicide in UP

A 40-year-old woman teacher allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling, on Wednesday, at her residence in Medical area of Meerut district, police said. According to the police, the deceased Suneeta Verma was a teacher in a junior high school and was married with two children.

Iran n-talks end sans breakthrough

Talks between Iran and six world powers being conducted over the former’s disputed nuclear programme concluded here Wednesday without reaching any agreement. But the two sides pledged to hold further meetings in the coming weeks.

The six world powers — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US — had proposed scaling back sanctions against Iran in exchange for the closure of its underground Fordo enrichment facility and an undertaking to halt the enrichment of uranium to 20 percent.

Three Delhi firefighters injured in shop blaze

Three fire service officials received burn injuries while attempting to douse a blaze at a shop here Wednesday, an official said.

They were injured when fighting fire caused by a gas cylinder explosion in the shop in Delhi’s Ghazipur area around 10 am.

“Three fire tenders were rushed in, and it took around 90 minutes to douse the blaze. However, three fire officials received 10-15 percent burn injuries during the operation,” a fire department official said.

No evidence against Varun Gandhi for inciting hate, says Pilibhit court

In a major relief to BJP leader Varun Gandhi, a Pilibhit court on Wednesday acquitted the young MP from the charge of hate speech in one of the two cases.

The court in Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district acquitted Varun citing lack of evidence. The second case would come up for hearing on March 1.

The cases were registered at the Kotwali police station in March 2009.

The Pilibhit MP had allegedly made provocative remarks against a minority community while addressing poll rallies during the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Good for India if Dhoni bats at No. 6: Rahul Dravid

Former India skipper Rahul Dravid on Wednesday suggested that Mahendra Singh Dhoni should consistently bat at number six in Tests as it can potentially change the complexion of the side in abroad series.

Dhoni batted at number six in the just-concluded first Test against Australia and went on to score a game-changing knock of 224 in the first innings.

It was after two years that Dhoni played at number six as the last time Indian skipper played at this position was in February 2010 against South Africa in Nagpur.

Forest guards forced to do sit-ups for molesting girls

Two forest guards were forced to do a hundred sit-ups by villagers for allegedly molesting two girls in Muru village in Latehar. The two girls had gone to collect firewood from the jungle when forest guards Bansi Yadav and Chatu Bhuiyan allegedly molested them yesterday, sources in forest department said. The girls, however, managed to escape and informed the incident to their relatives. A large number of villagers assembled and convened a panchayat to discuss the issue. The forest guards were also brought there.
