Stone pelting at factory, vehicles damaged on second day in Noida

Around 200 workers pelted stones at a factory in Sector 5 breaking windows and damaged vehicles on the second day of the 48-hour nationwide strike, even as authorities imposed prohibitory order in the district.

Five persons have been arrested in Thursday’s incident, Senior Superintendent of Police Shalabh Mathur said.

Around 100 workers had also assembled in Sector 10 industrial area and started pelting stones but police reached the spot and prevented damage to factories, he said.

“Barring these two minor incidents, no clash was reported from other places in the city,” the SSP said.

NIA files charge sheet against 12 LeT terror suspects

National Investigating Agency has filed a chargesheet against 12 of 15 arrested LeT terror suspects in a special court here for alleged conspiracy to kill prominent politicians and journalists in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Three others – Ijaz Mohammed Mirza, who was working as a scientist at DRDO, Syed Yusuf Nalaband, Muthi-ur-Rehman Siddiqui, who was a journalist, and Syed Tanzeem – have not been included in the chargesheet, police said.

The agency said it is continuing probe against them.

Normal life hit in Kashmir due to separatist-sponsored strike

Normal life was disrupted in Kashmir Valley for the second day on Thursday due to a strike called by hardline Hurriyat Conference in support of their demand for handing over the body of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru, who was hanged in Tihar Jail.

Most of the shops, business establishments and petrol pumps remained closed due to the strike, while public transport remained off the roads.

However, private vehicles could be seen plying on the roads in Srinagar and some other parts of the Valley.

Security better in Kashmir, northeast: President

The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast has shown “a perceptible improvement”, President Pranab Mukherjee said Thursday.

Addressing both houses of parliament, Mukherjee said the government was pursuing a two-pronged approach to deal with Maoists.

“The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir and the northeast has shown a perceptible improvement,” he said.

Mukherjee said the number of tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir had gone up from 8.99 lakh in 2011 to 12.37 lakh in 2012.

Togadia packed off from Jammu airport

VHP leader Praveen Togadia was on Thursday detained by the police at Jammu airport and sent back by authorities, fearing law and order disturbance.

“I have been detained at the Jammu Airport and not allowed to move out of the complex,” the Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader said.

“I was served notice by the Additional Deputy Commissioner Jammu which said that I will not be allowed to enter Jammu as it will create law and order problem,” Togadia said.

The VHP leader said, “They did not allow me to exercise my fundamental rights as a citizen of India”.

India to launch Mars mission this year: President

India will launch its first space mission to Mars this year, President Pranab Mukherjee said on Thursday.

“Several space missions are planned for 2013, including India’s first mission to Mars and the launch of our first navigational satellite,” Mukherjee said in his maiden address to the joint sitting of Parliament at the start of the Budget session.

The Indian Space Research Organisation will also put in orbit the first of its seven satellites of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). The system is India’s version of the Global Positioning System.

Scientists engineer unique gel to repair heart tissue

A less-invasive and biocompatible gel that can repair damaged tissue in heart attack patients has been developed by American scientists.

University of California-San Diego bioengineers have demonstrated in a study in pigs that a new injectable hydrogel can repair damage from heart attacks, help the heart grow new tissues and blood vessels, and improve the health of the heart.

The results of the study were published in Science Translational Medicine Wednesday (Feb 20) and cleared the way for clinical trials to begin this year in Europe.

Ear chopped off for joining strike in Bengal

Trinamool Congress workers allegedly chopped off the ear of a panchayat worker in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district Thursday for joining the two-day nationwide strike by major trade unions, police said.

“We have received information of the incident but no complaint has been registered so far,” an officer of Jalangi police station, under which the incident happened, said.
The incident occurred in Jalangi in Murshidabad district, some 200 km from Kolkata, when Hazrat Omar, a panchayat worker arrived at his office Thursday.

Ishrat Jahan encounter: CBI arrests Gujarat Police officer

CBI has arrested Gujarat Police officer G L Singhal in connection with the alleged fake encounter of 19-year old student Ishrat Jahan by a team of Ahmedabad crime branch officers in 2004.

CBI sources here said Singhal, an inducted IPS officer, who was then Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Branch, was arrested by the agency in Ahmedabad and searches are going on at his residential and official premises.

Congress finalising team for 2014 polls, indicates Rahul

The Congress party is in the process of finalising a team for the 2014 general elections, its vice president Rahul Gandhi indicated Thursday.

“There is a lot of talent in the party… I am very excited about it… the only thing is to align it,” Gandhi told reporters after the president’s address to the joint sitting of the two houses of parliament.

Gandhi, who sat in the second last row in the central hall of parliament, shared the bench with Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh and Minister of State for Home R.P.N. Singh.

8.2 percent of Indian Americans live below poverty line

Boasting of having the highest per capita income among all the major ethnic groups, more than eight percent of the nearly three million Indian Americans are living below the poverty line in the US, a latest Census report revealed yesterday.

According to the 2007-2011 American Community Survey, 42.7 million people in the United States had income below the poverty level. The national poverty rate is 14.7 percent.

With 8.2 percent of poverty rate, Indian Americans are far less poor than other ethnic groups and the national average, the Census Bureau report said.

Jamiat-Ulema divided over Narendra Modi

The Jamiat Ulema-Hind, which virtually controls the Islamic seminary Darul-Uloom at Deoband, appears sharply divided over Gujarat Chief Minister Naremdra Modi.

Jamiat president Maulana Arshad Madni said Thursday that there was no question of accepting the Gujarat strongman as India’s prime minister.

“Modi was wholly and solely responsible for the 2002 Gujarat riots… He(Modi) is protecting and shielding many politicians who were directly involved in the worst communal riots in the country,” he told the media.

The US government has presented a comprehensive strategy to fight industrial cyber-espionage and hacker attacks against the country that infringe on property rights and compromise company secrets.

Attorney General Eric Holder Wednesday introduced the Trade Secret Protection Strategy at a White House press conference.

He said that there are foreign countries and entities who want to take advantage of the US’ high level of innovation and noted that a “hacker in China can acquire source code from a software company in Virginia without leaving his or her desk”.

Gold prices hit seven-month low of Rs 29,263 per 10 gm

Gold prices tumbled by 1.06 percent to Rs 29,263 per 10 grams in futures trade on Thursday amid heavy selling by speculators, driven by a steep fall in prices in global markets.

The most active gold contract for April delivery on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) fell Rs 316, or 1.06 percent, to Rs 29,263 per 10 grams, with a business turnover of 12,794 lots.

Similarly, the metal for delivery in June dropped Rs 315, or 1.04 percent, to Rs 29,801 per 10 grams, with a business turnover of 920 lots.

Prolonged crisis drives up divorce rate in Syria

Divorce rate has gone up by 45 percent and marriage rate has dropped over 40 percent in Syria since the outbreak of protests against the government, show a media survey.

Due to constant conflict between the rebels and the government forces, divorced Syrians are set to outnumber married ones soon, the survey indicated.

Syrians live in a country plagued by violence and burdened by spiralling inflation and unemployment.

A woman is entitled to the same standard of living as that of her husband, a Delhi court has observed while directing an oil consultant, who got married in Amritsar 14 years back, to pay Rs two lakh monthly alimony to his estranged wife. “It is a settled law that a wife is entitled to same level of living as that of husband,” Metropolitan Magistrate Kiran Gupta said while directing the man, who renders consultation to mostly foreign oil exploration companies, to give Rs two lakh maintenance to his wife every month.

Five dead after small jet crashes in US

An official says five people are dead and two injured after a small jet ran off the end of a runway and crashed at an airport in eastern Georgia.

Thomson-McDuffie County Sheriff Logan Marshall says the jet carrying seven people crashed after 8 pm on Wednesday.

Logan says the two survivors were taken to area hospitals and their conditions were not known. He says the identities of those killed are being withheld pending notification of family members.

Togadia not allowed entry into Kashmir

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Pravin Togadia was Thursday barred from entering Jammu, with a police official saying his presence could lead “law and order” problems.

Togadia was sent back after his flight from Delhi landed. He was to attend several programmes in the Jammu region during a two-day visit.

“Law and order reasons necessitated the action,” a police official told IANS. He said Togadia was told that his presence could lead to tensions.
