Sonia expresses sorrow over blasts

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi expressed sorrow on the blasts in Hyderabad which left at least 11 people dead and scores injured, a party statement said Thursday.

“Sonia Gandhi has expressed her sorrow and anguish on the blasts in Hyderabad,” said the statement.

Both the blasts took place within 100 to 150 metres of each other in the crowded Dilsukhnagar, a busy commercial area in the southern part of Hyderbad, about 15 km from the heart of the city.

Gang-rape victim’s family to get flat

The central government Thursday approved the allotment of an apartment free of cost to the family of the Delhi gang-rape victim.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

“The union cabinet gave its approval for allotment of a MIG (middle-income group) flat free of cost by the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) to the family of the victim of sexual violence,” said an official statement.

It said the flat would be given through a relaxation in DDA policy and guidelines for allotment of houses on out-of-turn basis.

12 killed, 84 injured in terror strike in Hyderabad

Terror struck Hyderabad killing 12 people and injuring 84 others tonight when two powerful near simultaneous blasts ripped through a crowded area close
to a cluster of bus stands in Dilsukhnagar area.

The blasts triggered by Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) tied to two bicyles took place in the peak hour at two sites 100 metres apart outside a roadside eatery near Konark and Venkatadiri theatres in the area located on the Hyderabad-Vijaywada national highway in Cyberabad police limits.

People thought the first blast was a gas cylinder burst’

As the first blast occurred near a tea-cum-fast food centre diagonally opposite the busy Konark theatre area here around 1905 hours today, everyone first thought it was a gas cylinder had burst.

By the time the impact was felt, there were at least five-six bodies strewn around in a pool of blood with footwear and other objects scattered all around the place. Many others had sustained injuries while several vehicles parked there were either burnt or damaged.

In both cases, the explosives were fitted to bicycles and parked amid the bustling crowds.

Blasphemy case registered against Pak’s US envoy Sherry Rehman

A blasphemy case has been registered against Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States Sherry Rehman by Multan police.

According to a report published in the BBC Urdu, the case was registered on a complaint made by Faheem Gill, a citizen of Multan.

In his complaint, Gill has alleged that Rehman had committed blasphemy while speaking during a program aired on a private television channel on Nov 30, 2010, the Dawn reports.

12 dead in twin Hyderabad blasts: Home secretary

Serial bomb blasts rocked Hyderabad Thursday evening, killing at least 12 people and injuring around 57 others, Home Secretary R.K. Singh said.

“Twin blasts have occured. The number of dead has increased from 10 to 12 and the injured are 57,” R.K. Singh told reporters after holding a high-level security meet following the two near-simultaneous explosions.

The blasts occurred in the busy market place in Dilsukhnagar area in the city. The bombs were placed in bycycles.

According to some eyewitness accounts, three explosions were heard.

The CBI Thursday arrested a Gujarat police officer from Ahmedabad Thursday for his involvement in the alleged staged Ishrat Jahan shoot-out case of 2004, said an agency official.

G.L. Singhal, an Indian Police Service officer at present posted as superintendent of police at state crime records bureau, was arrested during a raid at his house and offices in Ahmedabad. As then assistant commissioner of police, crime branch team, Singhal had led the team that gunned down the 19-year-old student and three others in Ahmedabad.

Seven killed in Hyderabad blast

Seven people were killed and three others injured in an explosion in a crowded Dilsukhnagar area in Hyderabad, eye witnesses said.

The blast occurred near a theatre in Dilsukhnagar, a busy commercial area in the city.

Eye witnesses said they heard two loud explosions. The cause of the explosions was not immediately known. Police are yet to confirm casualties.

Ambulances and police vehicles rushed to the area.

Scientists at the University of Edinburgh say the findings could lead to new research into how different genes for schizophrenia affect brain function over time.

They also show that genes associated with schizophrenia influence people in other important ways besides causing the illness itself.

Jurassic records yield clues to global warming

Findings from fieldwork along the North Yorkshire coast reveal strong parallels between the Early Jurassic era of 180 million years ago and current climate predictions over the next century, according to researchers at Plymouth University, UK.

When it comes to stars in young star clusters the dynamics in these crowded environments cannot be simply explained by the pull of gravity, researchers have found.

After analyzing Hubble Space Telescope images of star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, researchers at the Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University in Beijing found more binary star systems toward the periphery of cluster than in the center-the opposite of what they expected.

AirAsia to invest $50 mn in proposed Indian airline

A new Indian airline, proposed to be launched by the Tata Group, AirAsia and another Indian investor, is likely to start operations by the fourth quarter of this year with about USD 50 million initial investment by the Malaysian budget carrier.

The airline, which would be based on the low-cost, no- frill model, would launch its operations with three to four Airbus A-320 aircraft and “scale up (the fleet) quickly thereafter,” AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said in a global teleconference from Malaysia.

SC sets up team to scan Radia tapes

A six-member special team comprising five from the CBI and one from the Income Tax department was on Thursday constituted by the Supreme Court to examine the contents of tapped telephonic conversations of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia with politicians, corporate honchos and others.

A bench comprising justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhaya said the working of the team will be supervised by two officers of the CBI who will report to Superintendent of Police, CBI dealing with the 2G matter.

Blast in northwest Pakistan; 1 killed, 10 wounded

One person was killed and 10 others were injured on Thursday when a bomb went off in a crowded market in Peshawar city of northwest Pakistan, officials said.

The explosion occurred at around noon in a mobile phone market at Hashtnagri in Peshawar, the capital of the restive Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Police and rescue service officials said one person was killed. Officials at a nearby hospital said they had received 10 injured people.

No group claimed responsibility for the bombing though such attacks are usually blamed on the banned Pakistani Taliban.

Air strikes in Pakistan kill 29 militants

Air strikes by combat jets have killed 29 militants and destroyed several hideouts in Pakistan’s lawless tribal belt, security officials said.

The air strikes on Wednesday targeted militant positions in Orakzai and Khyber tribal regions.

In Orakzai Agency, raids were carried out at Arghanju, Saparsok and Tanboh.

Nine militants were killed and several others were injured, security officials were quoted as saying by TV news channels.

Three militant hideouts were destroyed in the area.

Pakistan may become failed state: Shahbaz Sharif

Chief Minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Shahbaz Sharif, has said that the country may turn into “a failed state” if the widespread killings of innocent citizens continues.

He said that the ongoing killings of innocent citizens had brought democracy and the existing set-up into question.

Sharif said terrorism was at its peak in the country, adding that if concrete action was not taken against those responsible, the country’s foundations may begin to shake, the Dawn reports.

Karachi under ‘clear and present threat’ from Pak Taliban

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan has threatened to attack Pakistan Printing Press and over a dozen police stations in District Malir and District West.

Police force has been deployed in at least 13 police stations and nine police posts in different areas of the City after the terrorists threatened to attack the police.

According to the Nation, intelligence agencies have warned about the possible attacks on particular police stations in the areas dominated by militants known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Karachi.

US may impose sanctions on Pak over Iran gas import deal

The United States is expected to impose economic sanctions on Pakistan as it plans to import Iranian gas to meet its increasing energy needs.

A US newspaper report said Washington would impose sanctions on Islamabad if it goes ahead with the project.

The report comes as Pakistan enters a deal with an Iranian company to build its side of pipeline to materialise its plan to import gas, the News reports.

Barack Obama’s job approval rating reaches 3-yr high

US President Barack Obama has gained his highest approval rating as commander-in-chief of the US in over three years, a new poll has found.

A Bloomberg National Poll found that 55 percent of Americans approve of Obama’s performance, his highest rating in the poll since September 2009.

The poll also found that 49 percent of respondents believe that the president’s proposals to increase government spending in key areas are more likely to spur job creation than GOP-backed efforts to cut both spending and taxes, the Huffington Post reports.
