Perpetrators of Hyderabad blasts will be apprehended: Shinde

Government will make all possible efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and masterminds behind the twin blasts in Hyderabad in which 16 people were killed and 117 injured, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde told Parliament today.

Making a statement in the Lok Sabha after touring the blast sites, Shinde said the situation was under control and the government was committed to combat such cowardly terror attacks.

Hyderabad blasts: investigators yet to make headway

A “highly-disturbed” crime scene has not helped police make much headway into the twin bomb blasts probe at Dilsukhnagar here even as special teams from NIA, NSG and the Central Forensic Science Laboratory collected samples and sent them for detailed analysis.

The Saroor Nagar police registered a case, based on a complaint by an eyewitness under different sections of IPC and Sections 3 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act as well as Sections 16, 17 and 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on the twin blasts in which 16 people were killed and 117 injured.

Two get life terms for gang-rape in Haryana

A court here Friday sentenced, to life imprisonment, the two youth who gang-raped a Dalit girl in this Haryana district last year.

The court sentenced the two youth, Pradeep and Naveen, after convicting them for the gang-rape in Sachhakhera village here last October. A third youth had locked the room to stop the victim from escaping.

The victim, aged 16 years and belonging to a Dalit community, had set herself ablaze after the gang-rape.

Jayasuriya against junior Sri Lankans playing in IPL

Sri Lanka chief cricket selector Sanath Jayasuriya is not in favour of junior players of his country playing in the Indian Premiere League (IPL) tournament as they adopt different technique in the shorter version (T20) of the game.

Court orders pension for Hyderabad freedom fighter

The Delhi High Court Friday asked the government to grant a freedom fighter’s pension to a man who participated in the struggle against the Nizam’s government during the British rule.

Justice Valmiki J. Mehta allowed the petition of Pratapani Muthaiah seeking pension under the Swatantrata Sainik Sanman Pension Scheme, as his case was approved by the Hyderabad Special Screening Committee since he complied with all the terms and conditions of the scheme.

France condemns Hyderabad attack, offers support

France has condemned “in the strongest terms” the twin bombing in Hyderabad and said India can count on Paris’s “steadfast support and cooperation” in the fight against terrorism.

French President Francois Hollande, who had come to India last week, “most firmly condemns the attacks” that struck the people of Hyderabad, said a statement.

Another rape case involving minor victim in Bhandara

Close on the heels of rape and murder of three minor girls of a family in Bhandara, a 14-year- old girl was allegedly raped by a teacher on school premises in the district.

Yadav Borkar (46), a government school teacher, allegedly raped the girl in the school premises at Golati village in Lakhandur taluka of Bhandara district two days ago, police said.

After the complaint was filed today, Borkar surrendered before the police and was arrested.

Sarabjit Singh signs fresh appeal seeking clemency

Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh has signed a fresh appeal seeking clemency that is addressed to the people of Pakistan and President Asif Ali Zardari, his lawyer said on Friday. “Sarabjit has signed an appeal addressed jointly to the people of Pakistan and President Zardari and it will be sent to him (Zardari) for consideration,” Awais Sheikh, the counsel for the Indian national, said.

Afzal’s family hasn’t approached us: Tihar DG

The family of Afzal Guru, who was hanged two weeks ago at Tihar jail, has not yet approached the prison authorities to pray at his grave though the government has made the offer for his close relatives.

“We have not received any letter from Guru’s family in this regard,” Director General of Tihar Prisons Vimla Mehra told reporters.

The government has already said it will allow Guru’s close relatives to visit his grave, an offer rejected by the family which has been insisting on return of his body to them.

Professor accused of sexually harassing his colleague

A professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Indore has been accused by a woman colleague of sexual harassment, and a complaint has also been filed in this regard.

The woman professor lodged the complaint with institute director N Ravichandran against an associate professor of marketing department on February 20, a spokesman for the institute said.

‘Delhi Police warned of possible attack in Hyderabad’

The Delhi Police Special Cell had warned intelligence agencies about the possibility of an attack in Hyderabad following interrogation of accused after the Pune blast was cracked in September last year, an officer said.

One of the four suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) operatives, who were arrested for the Aug 1, 2012 Pune blast, had told the interrogators that they had done a recce of Hyderabad’s markets and a few crowded areas of Mumbai, a Delhi Police source told IANS.

50 injured as college teachers clash with policemen outside assembly

At least 50 persons, including women, were injured when private college teachers and security personnel fought a pitched battle in front of the Odisha assembly in Bhubaneswar on Friday, the police said.

The Mahatma Gandhi Marg virtually turned into a battlefield after the police used water canon and tear gas shells and finally lathicharged in its bid to restrict the teachers who marched towards the assembly building.

Delhi gang-rape panel submits report

The Justice Usha Mehra commission set up to enquire into the various aspects of the Dec 16 gang-rape here submitted its report to Law Minister Ashwini Kumar Friday.

“Government will give serious consideration to the report,” Ashwini Kumar said, while accepting the report.

The commission, headed by the former Delhi High Court judge, was set up Dec 26 to enquire into various aspects of the shocking incident of the rape, identify the lapses, if any, on the part of the police or any other authority. It was given three months for submitting its report.

2 militants killed, 4 detained over Quetta attacks on Shias

Two members of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, responsible for terror attacks on Shias were killed and four detained during a pre-dawn operation by security forces in Quetta city of southwest Pakistan today.

CBI plea for custody of cop arrested in Ishrat case rejected

A Gujarat court today rejected a CBI application seeking 14 days’ remand of IPS officer Girish Singhal, who was arrested in the alleged fake encounter case of Ishrat Jahan and three others, and sent him to judicial
custody until March 8.

The Special CBI Court judge H S Khutwad observed while there were serious allegations against the police officer and without his presence probe could not have been conducted but the CBI could not produce appropriate grounds for his remand.

Man sentenced to seven-year RI for abduction, rape of minor

A 40-year-old man from powerloom town of Bhiwandi here was sentenced to seven years of imprisonment
by a local court today for abducting and raping a 12-year-old girl in 2010.

Thane Additional Sessions Judge U B Shukla awarded the sentence to Arif Ahmed Memon. He was also slapped with a fine of Rs 10,000.

The girl, a fifth grade student, and the accused were residents of the same locality.

China provides Rs 136 billion loan for Pak nuclear plants

China has provided a loan of Rs 136 billion for two nuclear power plants that Pakistan expects to commission by 2016, the state-run media reported today.

The power plants of 340MW each are being built with Chinese assistance at the Chashma nuclear complex in Punjab
province.

The “construction of these power plants became possible after a long-standing agreement”, official sources were quoted as saying by APP news agency.

The total cost of the two plants is Rs 190 billion and they will be partially funded by a Chinese loan of Rs 136
billion, the sources said.

Five killed, eight injured in road mishap

Five persons were killed and eight others injured when a truck and an auto-rickshaw collided in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district today, police said.

One person was killed and 12 others were injured, most of them critically, when the speeding vehicles collided at
Bhagawatipara in Bijoynagar outpost area.

The injured were rushed to a local hospital where four of them succumbed to their injuries, while eight others are in a serious condition.

Protesting the accident, locals set the truck ablaze and blocked the road near the accident site.

Three Of Injured In Critical Stage

Care Hospital doctors have said the condition of three out of 20 persons, who were grievously injured in Dilsukhnagar bomb blast, was critical.
Speaking to the media here on Friday, the doctors said they were treating the three through ventilation. They said a woman, who was injured in the bomb blast, lost her pregnancy. They said the explosive materials pierced into backs of the victims and they were trying to remove them by surgical operations. (NSS)
