Brisk polling in Nagaland

Polling was in “full swing” Saturday for the 60-member Nagaland assembly that began on a peaceful note, an official said.

People came out in large numbers to exercise their franchise when ballotting began at 7 a.m.

“Polling is on in full swing in almost all the polling stations of the state. All the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are working properly and there is no reports of any incident from anywhere so far,” Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Nagaland N. Moa Aier told IANS.

Pakistan detains Lashkar-e-Jhangvi leader Malik Ishaq

Pakistani authorities have detained the founder and former head of militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), Malik Ishaq, at his home in Punjab province.

The group said that it carried out an attack in a Shia Muslim area of the southern city of Quetta last Saturday, which killed almost 90 people.

A heavy contingent of police surrounded Ishaq”s residence and held negotiations with him, after which he gave himself over to the police, the BBC reports.

It is not clear whether Ishaq has been formally charged with any offence.

Pak bus crash kills 19

At least 19 people, including women and children, died when a mini-bus in a wedding procession plunged into a canal in northwest Pakistan on Friday, officials said.

The wedding procession was on its way to Charsadda town in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province when the vehicle fell into the canal at Chargano Killey.

The canal was swollen following heavy rains and several people were swept away. Rescue teams retrieved 19 bodies from the canal and took eight injured persons to Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.

Apprehensions are being expressed about the involvement of one Sri Raju Bhayya in connection with Dilsukhnagar bomb blast.

According to the information telecast by the TV Channels, Raju Bhayya had arranged food and shelter in the city for the culprits of the bomb blast. Union Ministry of Home Affairs has also released the photograph of Raju Bhayya. A TV Channel claimed that it has Raju Bhayya’s imaginary photograph. Soon after the spread of this information, curiosity to know about Raju Bhayya has increased.

Surprise check reveals problems in Russian military

A series of random checks in the Russian Armed Forces has revealed a number of systemic shortcomings, General Staff chief Valery Gerasimov said.

Combat alert checks were carried out in the Central and South Military Districts, the Airborne Assault Forces (VDV) and military transport aviation units.

Alert duty officers in some military units demonstrated an insufficiently prompt and ineffective response in processing orders via automated combat command and control systems, especially in VDV troops and at the 201st Military Base in Tajikistan, Gerasimov said.

Medical experts against too many VIPs visiting blast victims

Medical experts have advised against too many VIPs visiting the bomb blast victims undergoing treatment in various hospitals here.

Such visits hamper the work of hospital authorities and may also adversely affect the health of patients, they have warned.

Many political leaders, including state and central ministers, are making a beeline to pay a visit to blast victims who are being treated in eight hospitals.

As many as 16 persons died and 119 were injured in the twin bombs that rocked Dilshuknagar area last evening.

CBSE to offer Human Rights, Gender Studies course

The CBSE has decided to offer elective course on Human Rights and Gender Studies at higher secondary school level to increase awareness among students on the issues.

The elective course will be offered for class XI and XII at pilot stage for CBSE-affiliated schools in 2013-14 session and as a regular elective from 2014-15 session onwards, Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor said while replying to a question in Rajya Sabha.

The National Curriculum Framework, 2005, prioritises gender as an important guiding principle in all curricular areas, he said.

Mathai meets top defence official, concludes US visit

Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai concluded his three-day US trip after his meeting with Deputy Secretary of Defence Ashton Carter, at the Pentagon on Friday.

“Dr Carter’s continued engagement with senior Indian officials demonstrates the importance the Defence Department places on US-India relations,” a Pentagon spokesperson said after the meeting.

During his three-day trip to Washington, Mathai held wide range of talks on bilateral and regional issues with top American officials including his meeting with the new Secretary of State, John Kerry.

Security agencies were careless

Security agencies are being blamed for their failure in connection with the bomb blast case of Dilsukhnagar. It is clearly a case of lethargy and carelessness of the security agencies Dilsukhnagar area is one of the busiest business centers. Earlier, a bomb was blasted in this area in 2002. It is the second time that the terrorists have targeted Dilsukhnagar area which caused the deaths of many persons.

It is said that the terrorists took stock of the situation of the area completely and then they executed this blast.

No Progress in Dilsukhnagar bomb blast case

Even after the lapse of two days, there seems to be no progress in the investigations of Dilsukhnagar bomb blast case. Investigating agencies have not been successful in getting a clue to the incident. National Investigating Agency, National Security Guards and Bomb Disposal Squad have collected the samples of the bombs blasted and other important proofs.

Germany condemns Hyderabad blasts

Germany on Friday condemned the Hyderabad twin blasts, terming the terrorist strikes as “abhorrent acts of hate and intolerance.”

German Ambassador Michael Steiner said the attack “reminds us how easily the peace in our lives, that we all too often take for granted, can be disrupted by abhorrent acts of hate and intolerance.”

He was speaking at a reception hosted for a Bavarian business delegation at his residence here.

Ajaz & Vijaykumar were purchasing books and met with accident

Vijay Kumar who went to a book shop to purchase books for Excise Inspector’s examination. Rajasekhara Reddy (MBA) Harish (Engineering) Swapna (Engineering) and Ajaz Ahmed (B.Tech) were the students who died in Dilsukhnagar bomb blasts.

Bomb blasts occurred in the densely populated area of Dilsukhnagar. Bombs were tied to bicycles near Konarak and Venkatadari theatres. These theatres are located on one side of the Hyderabad and Vijayawada National Highway. This is the area from which of buses of all the bus depots pass through.

Azad angry with CM for not stopping blast

Union Health Minister, Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad incharge of A.P. officers was angry with AP CM Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy that despite centre’s giving indications, he did not stop bomb blasts.

According to reliable sources, it was learnt that after visiting the spot of bomb blast and Osmania General Hospital, Mr. Azad consulted Mr. N. Kiran Kumar Reddy and other Ministers.

Amendments in wakf Bill cleared by Cabinet

Polling begins in Nagaland

Polling for the 60-member Nagaland assembly began on a peaceful note Saturday, an official said.

Around 1.1 million electorate will exercise their franchise.

There 188 candidates in the electoral fray this time including two women candidates.

Polling started at 7 a.m. in most of the polling stations in the state, said Chief Electoral Officer J. Alam.

Hyderabad youth survives the serial blasts and Mecca Masjid attack

Life has come in a full circle for 23-year old Abdul Wasif Mirza, who received injuries in his back and hand during the bomb blasts at Dilsukhnagar on Thursday evening.

Writhing with pain on the bed at Yashoda Hospitals, Malakpet, Mirza was perhaps the only person to get injured in the terror attacks. The first time he had suffered grievous injuries to his left leg, neck and stomach, was during the Mecca Masjid blasts in May 2007, which claimed 14 lives.

‘Media can play imp role in building Indo-Pak relations’

For ushering a new era of peace and cordial bilateral relations between India and Pakistan, the media of both countries have a vital role to play, Punjab Legislative Assembly Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal said on Friday.

IIM professor files sexual harassment complaint against colleague

A woman professor at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) here has filed a complaint of sexual harassment against her colleague.

She lodged the complaint with institute director N Ravichandran against the associate professor of marketing department on February 20, a spokesman for the institute said.

The complaint was forwarded to the gender sensitivity committee headed by external member Reba Majumdar, the spokesman said, adding the committee held two meetings on the issue since yesterday and recorded the statements of the accused and the victim.

Suriyanelli case: Victim lodges complaint against P J Kurien

Invoking the provisions of the new ordinance promulgated in wake of the Delhi gang-rape incident, the victim in the Suriyanelli case today filed a police complaint insisting that Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien be made an accused.

The victim and her parents went to the police station but the Assistant Sub-Inspector refused to register the complaint, saying the Sub-Inspector was not present but only accepted it, her counsel Anila George told a news agency.
