Hold police accountable for rapes: Activists

Women activists Saturday said the Justice Usha Mehra committee report on the Delhi gang-rape has proved that there was need to act against policemen accountable for such crimes.

“I think it (the report) only brings out what we have been saying that police should be held accountable,” Sudha Sundararaman, general secretary of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, told IANS.

“Action should be taken against those who fail to act,” she said.

PM to visit Hyderabad on Sunday

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh will arrive in city to console the blast victims.

The Prime Minister will arrive by a special flight on Sunday morning and visit the bomb blast site. He will also visit the hospitals where the injured are undergoing treatment.

`India has 61.3 mn people over 20 years with diabetes`

An estimated 61.3 million people in India suffer from diabetes, Union Health Minister Ghulab Nabi Azad said Friday.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), factors responsible for the increase in non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, are unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, harmful use of alcohol, obesity and tobacco use, the minister said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.

“The International Diabetes Federation estimates that 61.3 million persons aged 20 years and above in India had diabetes in 2011,” Azad said.

Grief could soon be branded a `mental illness`

The grieving process could be branded a medical condition if a mourner feels sad for more than two weeks and consults a GP, psychiatrists have claimed.

At present, mourners can feel sad for two months before being told they have a mental disorder, Professor Dale Larson said. Decades ago, a diagnosis could be made after a year.

Bomb Blasts: ‘T’ Congress Mps Complain To Azad Against CM

Telangana Congress MPs met AICC general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad here this morning and complained that the style of functioning of Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy was responsible for the bomb blasts in Hyderabad.

The MPs, Ponnam Prabhakar, Rajaiah and Vivek, met Azad and told him that the blasts threw a bad light on the working of the Congress government.

HS Shankarlinge Gowda, who represents Chamaraja Assembly constituency, waited for more than 90 minutes for Speaker KG Bopaiah and submitted his resignation letter, official sources said.

Bopaiah immediately accepted the resignation of Gowda, who is now all set to join JDS.

3500 Surveillance Cameras To Be Installed In City

The State Government has decided to install 3500 surveillance cameras in sensitive and crowded areas in Hyderabad and Cyberabad jurisdiction at an estimated cost of Rs.450 crores.

This was disclosed by Home Minister Sabita Indra Reddy to media after a high-level meeting was held by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy with senior police officers. She said the Chief Minister had directed that the installation of the cameras should be completed within three months.

CM to witness PSLV launch at Sriharikota

Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will witness the PSLV launch at Sriharikota on February 25.

According to a CMO release, the Chief Minister will reach the Chennai Airport from Hyderabad by regular flight at 11 am on Monday and reach Sriharikota in Nellore District by helicopter at 11.40 am. He will reach Bhaskara Guest House, Sriharikota at 11.50 am and after brief stay will reach the SDSC helipad at 1.05 pm and receive the President of India Pranab Mukherjee.

The researchers found that pat pups separated from their mothers a few hours each day, experienced a significant decrease in this basic heart function when – as life tends to do – an extra stressor was added to raise blood pressure, said Dr. Catalina Bazacliu, neonatologist at the Medical College of Georgia and Children`s Hospital of Georgia at Georgia Regents University.

Dilsukhnagar limping back to normalcy

The busy Dilsukhnagar area of the city, which witnessed twin bomb blasts on Thursday, is limping back to normalcy with shopkeepers and roadside vendors resuming their business.

Traffic returned to normal today and commercial establishments began to open on the stretch, two days after the deadly terror attack near the bus stand, claimed 16 lives.

Meanwhile, sources in the state-run Osmania General Hospital said that the condition of some of the injured is stated to be critical.

The Andhra Pradesh government has promised to bear their cost of treatment.

Hyderbad terror attack shattered young dreams

Thursday’s terror attacks in Hyderabad snuffed out innocent young lives, snatched bread earners of families, shattered many dreams and left some maimed for life.

The victims include young students who had come to Hyderabad from various districts with dreams of making a career and a poor worker who migrated from Rajasthan to eke out a livelihood.

The twin blasts in the crowded Dilsukhnagar plunged the families into grief.

Two young friends, who had dreams of donning police uniforms, were among 16 who lost their lives.

Raja seeks permission to depose before JPC

Former Telecom Minister A. Raja has sought Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar’s permission to depose before the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) examining the 2G spectrum issue, sources close to him said Saturday.

Raja handed over a letter to Meira Kumar Friday seeking her permission to depose before the JPC, sources close to Raja said.

The 2G spectrum scam involved the sale in 2008 of telecommunications bandwidth at allegedly understated prices.

The sale occurred when Raja headed the telecommunications and IT ministry.

As many as 15 special teams have been constituted to probe into the Dilsukhnagar twin blast.

Talking to reporters after attending the High Level Review meeting held by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar at the State Secretariat here on Saturday, Home Minsiter P Sabitha Indira Reddy claimed that several crucial clues have been gathered by the investigating agencies and a breakthrough would be achieved soon. She assured that those responsible for the blasts would be arrested and severely punished by the law.

TRS demands CM’s resignation over twin blast

The Telangana Rashtra Samithi on Saturday demanded that Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy resign from his post owing moral responsibility for the Dilsukhnagar twin blast.

Talking to reporters here, TRS leader Shravan alleged that the Chief Minister had no control over the administration and law and order in the State. He said that it was due to the government’s negligence that the terrorists were able to execute two blasts in Dilsukhnagar area. Stating that an alert administration and police would have foiled the terror attack, he demanded that Kiran Kumar Reddy step down from his post.

Govt should stop playing politics with terrorism: BJP

Refuting Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde’s charge that Opposition-ruled states were opposed to formation of NCTC, the BJP on Saturday said the government needs to strengthen intelligence gathering and coordination rather than “playing politics” on the issue of terrorism.

“Several innocent lives have been lost in the Hyderabad blasts. The government should stop playing politics on the issue of terrorism. We want the government to take appropriate action. There should be better coordination between the Centre and the state governments,” BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

Three people commit suicide

A farmer allegedly committed suicide after he was unable to pay the debt he had taken, police said.

35-year-old Amarnath hanged himself from a tree yesterday in the Bilhour area.

The victim had taken loan from many money lenders to do farming which he was unable to repay, police said.

In another case, a girl from Faithfulganj area allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself after she had gone into depression over the recent death of her mother. She was living with her elder brother.

Security tightened at Indo-Nepal border after twin

In the wake of Hyderabad blasts, the Uttar Pradesh and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) have stepped up vigil along the Indo-Nepal border to prevent any untoward incidents.

The security agencies have been asked to ascertain the identities of people before allowing them to cross over through the border, commandant SSB K S Bankothi said.

The SSB deployed in the area that falls under the Mahrajganj district, have installed close circuit cameras on each and every route leading to Nepal, he said.

These cameras have been put on SSB posts besides on the main roads.

US approves new targeted breast cancer drug

The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a first-of-a-kind breast cancer medication that targets tumour cells while sparing healthy ones.

The drug Kadcyla from Roche combines the established drug Herceptin with a powerful chemotherapy drug and a third chemical linking the medicines together. The chemical keeps the cocktail intact until it binds to a cancer cell, delivering a double-shot of anti-tumour poison.

Cancer researchers say the drug may offer a clear advantage over older drugs because it delivers more medication with fewer side effects.

Smoking cessation cuts risk of heart attacks and strokes by over 40%

The positive effect of smoking cessation becomes noticeable within a short period of time, according to a new study.

The study found that compared to individuals who continue smoking, the risk of myocardial infarction and stroke is reduced by more than 40 percent already within the first five years after the last cigarette.

Professor Hermann Brenner and colleagues analyzed the data of 8.807 individuals aged between 50 and 74 years using data of Saarland citizens.
