2 injured in wild animals’ attack

Kishan a shepherd belonging to Potaipally of Lingampet mandal was attacked by a bear. He sustained serious injuries. The bear injured Kishan’s head, leg and stomach parts when the later took his cattle to forest for grazing. He was shifted to Kamareddy hospital in 108 ambulance where his condition is said to be critical.

Minority affairs ministry gets 12 percent more funding

Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram Thursday allocated Rs.3,511 crore to the minorities affairs ministry, an increase of 12 percent over last year.

“I have allocated Rs.3,511 crore to the ministry of minorities affairs. This is an increase of 12 percent over the BE (budget estimate) last year,” Chidambaram announced in his budget speech in Lok Sabha.

“It is 60 percent over the RE (revised estimates) over last year,” he added.

The ministry was allocated Rs.3,135 crore last year, but only spent Rs.2,218.26 crore of it.

We have to play at our absolute best: Watson

Australian batsman Shane Watson has said his side would have to play at their absolute best to win the second Test against India starting here Saturday.

He also believes that the team would have to play its aggressive brand of cricket to do well in the series, after losing the first Test at Chennai.

President Mukherjee to undertake three-day official visit to Bangladesh

President Pranab Mukherjee will pay a state visit to Bangladesh from March 3 to 5, at the invitation of the Government of Bangladesh.

This will be Mukherjee”s first visit abroad after his assumption of the office of President.

During his visit, President Mukherjee will call on the President of Bangladesh, Mohammad Zillur Rahman, and receive the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award.

China to launch major aircraft engine project: Sources

The State Council, China’s cabinet, is currently deliberating a major aircraft engine research and development project, sources revealed Thursday.

The project will require an investment of at least 100 billion yuan (about 15.93 billion U.S. dollars), a professor at the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (BUAA) with knowledge of the project told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The investment would be used mainly for research on technology, designs and materials related to aircraft engine manufacturing, the professor said.

Obama praises courage of Rosa Parks

President Barack Obama Wednesday praised the courage of Rosa Parks at a ceremony in the US Capitol where he dedicated the statue in honour of the civil rights activist.

“(I)n a single moment, with the simplest of gestures, she helped change America – and change the world,” he said of Parks, the first African-American to be honoured with a life-size statue in the Capitol.

Iran tells Pak gasline must advance despite US hostility

Iran”s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has told visiting Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari that a much-delayed 7.5 billion-dollar gas pipeline project must go ahead despite US opposition. The Nation quoted Khamenei, as telling Zardari that the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline is an important example of Tehran-Islamabad cooperation, and despite hostilities towards the expansion of ties the two countries must overcome this opposition decisively.

Abhishek Bachchan in Umesh Shukla’s ‘Mere Apne’

Director Umesh Shukla of “OMG: Oh My God!” fame will start shooting his second film “Mere Apne” with actor Abhishek Bachchan soon. He says it is a family oriented movie.

“In the next four weeks, we will confirm Abhishek’s dates and will start shooting. The schedule will complete in one go, it is a 60-day schedule. We will be shooting in Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and London,” Shukla told IANS.

The film has the same title as a 1971 movie. However, Shukla confirmed it is not a remake of any film.

Sensex trades half a point down after budget proposals

In the absence of any significant market moving proposals in the budget, a benchmark index for Indian equities was trading more than half a percent down in afternoon session Thursday.

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram’s budget proposals like higher taxes on corporates and individuals further weighed on the markets. His plan to liberalise the Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS) by extending it beyond one year to three years and raising the income limit from Rs.10 lakh to Rs.12 lakh did not help much.

A digital device to reduce food wastage

Four killed, three injured in AP road accident

Four persons were killed and three others injured today when the car they were travelling in overturned in Andhra Pradesh’s Ranga Reddy district.

The accident occurred at around 1.30 AM, when the driver lost control of the car at a high speed and it turned turtle near Bonguluru of Ibrahimpatnam.

Three persons died on the spot while another victim succumbed on way to hospital, police said adding that three other passengers suffered minor injuries in the mishap.

The deceased have been identified as – Sridhar Reddy, Dhanraj, Narasimha and Narendra (aged between 22-35 years).

Budget lays roadmap for investment: PM

Hailing the budget, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said it would reverse the pessimistic mood and lay the roadmap for investments as he expressed confidence of returning to eight per cent growth within three years.

Singh listed fiscal deficit, inflation and current account deficit as three barriers that can affect the realisation of the growth potential of the economy.

Pinaka rockets successfully test-fired

Indigenously developed ‘Pinaka’ rockets were on Thursday successfully test-fired from a multi-barrel rocket launcher (MBRL) by an armament establishment from a base at Chandipur-on-sea, about 15 km from here.

“Three rounds of Pinaka rockets were successfully tested today,” defence sources said, adding some more trials were expected to be conducted on Friday.

On January 30 and 31, this year, seven rounds of “Pinaka” rockets were tested from the same base.

‘Pinaka’, which has undergone several tough tests since 1995, has already been inducted into the armed forces.

Five Bangladeshis sentenced to five years imprisonment

Five Bangladeshi nationals were sentenced by a Fast Track court here to five years rigorous imprisonment for non-possession of visa.

Additional Session Judge (Fast Track), R K Sahoo, while convicting the Bangladeshis yesterday also imposed a penalty of Rs 1,000 each for commission of the offence in 2007.

In the event of failure to pay the penalty amount, the foreign nationals would have to undergo additional jail term of three months.

The convicts are Arif Khan (26), Paus Khan (25), Md Abul Basar Mulla (31), Md Asadul Mulla (25) and Sk Zahir (24).

Boy commits suicide over mobile phone

A 12-year-old boy immolated himself in Bihar after his father snatched his mobile telephone that he had allegedly bought with stolen money, police said Thursday.

Nitish Kumar alias Golu committed suicide in Pasewarh village in Siwan district, about 150 km from here, late Wednesday.

The incident happened after his father asked him why he bought a second hand mobile phone after stealing Rs.500, police official Ramagya Rai said. The victim was a Class V student.

Minor girl raped and murdered

An eight-year-old who had reportedly gone missing from a marriage function two days ago was allegedly raped and her body was found in a pit in Chuabepur area here, police said.

The naked body of the victim was found by villagers yesterday in the pit near a cold storage, they said.

The victim had gone missing from a marriage function here on Tuesday, they said.

A postmortem has revealed that her private body parts were badly wounded, they said.]

Chidambaram fair to defence sector: Antony

Defence Minister A.K. Antony said Thursday Finance Minister P.Chidambaram had done a good job in the union budget. He said that considering the overall economic situation, the finance minister had been fair to the defence sector in allocating Rs.203,672 crore (over Rs.2 trillion) in 2013-14.

“Taking into account the difficult economic situation both at home and abroad, the finance minister has done a good job. The measures that he has outlined for the rejuvenation of the economy while ensuring inclusive growth are indeed commendable,” Antony said.

Powerful landmine recovered, defused in Jharkhand

A powerful landmine planted on a state highway was recovered and defused in West Singhbhum district on a tip off by a hard-core Naxal arrested by the security personnel, police said on Thursday.

A landmine weighing around 40 to 45 kg was planted on the state highway between Chotanagra-Manoharpur road to target the security personnel, Superintendent of Police of West Singhbhum, Pankaj Kamboj.

The landmine was recovered yesterday following the arrest of the chairman of Krantikari Kishan Committee, a frontal organisation of CPI(Maoist) Vishnu Cherwa, Kambhoj said.

Taliban bombs 4 schools in Pakistan

Taliban fighters on Thursday bombed four schools in the restive Mohmand tribal region of Pakistan, the latest in a series of attacks that has destroyed hundreds of state-run educational institutions.

No one was injured in the blasts that destroyed the schools at about 2:30 am, officials said.

The Taliban have destroyed over 100 schools in Mohmand Agency, one of the seven semi-autonomous tribal districts.

The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan is opposed to co-education and the curriculum of state-run schools, which it has described as “un-Islamic”.

Defence Ministry gets 14 pc hike in budget

In the midst of a major modernisation drive, Defence Ministry today got a 14 per cent hike in its budget as Finance Minister P Chidambaram gave it Rs 2,03,672 crore for 2013-14 with a promise to provide any additional fund required for national security.

Today’s allocation is up by Rs 25,169 crore from last year’s revisited estimate of Rs 1,78,503 crore. The budget estimate was Rs 1,93,407 crore but Rs 14,904 crore was slashed by the Finance Ministry owing to the strain on the economy.

Health gets over 28 percent hike in budget

Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has proposed a hike in India’s health budget by over 28 percent in 2013-14 to Rs.37,330 crore (Rs.373 million), with special focus on medical education, training and research.

Making the announcement Thursday, Chidambaram said the focus of the government was “health for all”.

He said the new National Health Mission that combines the rural mission and the proposed urban mission would get Rs.21,239 crore (Rs.212 million), a hike of 24.3 percent over the revised estimates.

Mason gets 10 years in jail for raping woman labourer

A 38-year-old mason has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by a Delhi court for raping a young woman who had come from Madhya Pradesh with her mother to work as a labourer at a construction site here.

Additional Sessions Judge M C Gupta awarded the jail term to Uttar Pradesh native Raj Kumar Gupta for raping the woman thrice, at her rented accommodation, in March 2010.

Sarabjit’s conviction is a miscarriage of justice: Lawyer

The conviction and imprisonment of Sarabjit Singh, an Indian on death row in a Pakistani jail for alleged involvement in a string of bomb attacks, was “an extraordinary miscarriage of justice”, his lawyer has said in a new book. Sarabjit was sentenced to death in 1990 after being convicted of alleged involvement in bombing in Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 people.
